The primary objective of Boy’s State is to give a young man actual experiences in the way local and state governments function, and, hopefully, to create interest and desire within a person to practice sound government in our everyday lives now and in the future. In Boy’s State we set up our own 51 states with a state, county, and local government. We were also divided into ten cities, with 42 in a city, and five counties, two cities to a county. In all cities 40 percent were Nationalists and 20 percent were Independents. Each party held city, county, and finally state caucuses. The main goal of each party was to set up their party platform and obtain the votes of the Independents. After all was said and done the week ended with the election of state officials and the new Boy’s State Governor, David Jacobs. During this week we listened to many speakers from many branches of government—from an FBI agent to Governor Wendell Anderson. What I have gained from Boy’s State is a better insight to all forms of government and the desire to become more active in the functions which our government carries out. By Dennis Rustad Girl's State was a learning experience as well as being a lot of fun. The 25th session of Girl's State was held on the cam- pus of St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn. There were 452 girls who came from all over Minne- sota, each one not really knowing anyone else. As time went on and the activities got underway, the girls became better acquainted. The purpose of this session was to inform girls from all over Minnesota about their government. This was accomplished through activities which included par- ticipating in governmental duties such as running for an office, electing officials, writing party platforms, and campaigning for candidates from the city level to the state level in an imaginary situation. Also we had speakers who informed us on such things as American- ism, passing a bill and duties of our congressmen. During our free time we could take part in swimming, playing tennis, hiking, or just sitting around and talking. Girl's State proved to be a very rewarding and mem- orable experience. I didn't know one word of Portuguese (1 was hoping Spanish would be similar), and I had been thinking of Sao Paulo in terms of 400,000 people. My thoughts on these ideas were only two of the surprises that helped make my nine-month stay in Brazil interesting and exciting. My first impression of Brazil was that I was going to be run over before I had a chance to write home to say I'd arrived! There are hundreds of thousands of cars in Sao Paulo (almost all of them arc Volkswagons or foreign compacts). The traltic lanes, right-of-ways and speed limits arc totally ignored. My second shock of the day came when 1 saw the enormous size of the city. Sao Paul is called tlie South American New York City because of its thousands of industries and a population of six and a half million people. Most of the city's recent inhabitants have come from the vast interior of the country in order to find higher-paying jobs in the big city. Consequently, there is now a huge surplus of workers, so these people cither find menial work to do or join the increasing number of slum tenents. The Brazilian school I attended was certainly different from what I was used to. Students choose the type of class they want to take, scientific or classical, but they can't choose their classes. My school required courses in Portugues, English and German (some students also look Latin), so the students have a great language advantage over American schools. Other- wise the courses were equivalent to or a year behind Benson's school system. I was surprised at the amount of American influence in the larger cities. Most of the movies arc produced by American companies, while other companies like Kodak, Ford, Shell and Coca-Cola have huge factories in Sao Paulo. All the educated adults I met had a sometimes frustrating manner of believing that they knew exactly what was wrong with the policies of the United States, and they didn't hesitate to tell me exactly what we (the U.S. ) should do! Generally Americans arc well-liked, and everyone 1 met was very friendly and helpful. During my stay in Brazil, I saw many interesting places and learned many things about life. But, most of ali, 1 came to understand and communicate with the friendly and wonderful people of Brazil. Tchau cboa sorte' Lynn Burbank Jenny Rodriguez On September 18, 1971, Jenny Rodriguez arrived at Benson. Jenny is from Quito, Equador, and while in Benson, her new home is with Mrs. Viola Jacobson, and her family. Jenny's parents in Equador are Mr. Enrique, an army general, and Mrs. Raguel Rodriguez. She has four brothers and three sisters, ranging from ages 8-24, and Jenny is the third to the youngest. When asked what the difference were between the schools in Benson and the schools in Equador, she explained that in Equador they don't have lunch in school. At 12:30 they go home for lunch and they don't return until 2:00 p. m. They then remain in school until 5:00 p.m. Jenny had to make many changes in her language, but she said the main difference she found between Equador and the United States were the people and the customs. Despite the difference she said the thing she enjoyed most about Benson was the people. In Benson Jenny's favorite sports are basketball, volleyball, and bowling, Jenny is spending the entire school year in Benson, and will probably return to Equador in July. Next year she plans to attend a University in Equador. Foreign Exchange Students Pat Charbonneau, arrived in Benson on August 16 at 5:00 p.m. Pat is from Cauto du Lac, Quebec, and while in Benson, his home was with Bill and Irma Smith. The name of Pat's mother in Quebec is Nannette Charbonneau. Pat has two sis- ters, both of which are older than Pat. When asked what he enjoyed most about Benson he replied, There are more girls than boys, and that makes it easier to get a girl. Pat then explained that the difference between Benson and Quebec was that In Quebec we don't put peanut butter and jam on our steaks. He also said that the relationships between the students and our customs of the people are different. We asked Pat if living in Benson had changed the views of the United States, and he replied. You really don't judge a whole country, by living in one town and seeing just a small part of the country. Pat's favorite hobbies are, in this order, going out with girls and photography. Next year Pat hopes to go to the AAF in Florida, and become a Commercial Pilot. We asked Pat for a quote, and he left us with the following French poem. Varsity Football Although this year turned out to be a losing season for the Braves, a 2-6-1 record does not tell the whole story. The Braves were always fighting and were never out of the game. The Braves did, however, beat one of the conference favorites, Sauk Centere, ending the season on the winning note and looking forward to next year. Cheerleaders help out. The B-squad team was let down this year by falling one game short of the 500 percent mark. What was suppose to be one of the conferences more powerful teams, the young braves failed to put it all together in the early weeks of the season and ended up with a 3-4 record. The braves did end the season with an impressive win over Glen- wood by romping them 44 to 28. FRONT ROW: B. Jaeger, K. Larson, D. Olson, R. Maras, L. Tatge, M. Forbord, B. Bruess, D. Reagan. T. Cross Country Coach Stewart said that lack of experience was the main reason for the cross country team finishing with a 1-5 record. He was quick to point out that as the season progressed so did our runners, and the Braves did manage to finish respectably in District Play— taking third place honors. Cook, S. Loen, C. Butala, R. Rice, R. Anfinson, J. Hughes, R. Lamppa, J. Johnson. Layton calls time. The Benson Braves started the season with little experience and a new coach. This season coul be called a building year for Benson because next year the team will return with experience and will be adjusted to Coach Layton's basketball tactics. The Braves should be one the of better conference teams next year. Both coaches question decision, comes down with a big rebound. Krupke shoots high. Morris FRONT ROW: R. Bouta, B. Jaeger, L. New coach Bowyer hopes to help produce a strong A-Squad team in the future. This year Benson B-Squad has a new coach with many new ideas. Watching him from the stands shows you that he is a very fiery, young coach with a lot of spirit. But the future of Benson basketball rests on the shoulders of the B-Squad players and their coach. Hazewinkle, Coach, Benson lost some powerful wrestlers during the 1970-1971 season, but coaches Hazewinkle and Stewart proved they could make a winner out of inexperienced, but strong wrestlers. Probably, the one meet that proved Benson was still in the run for the West Conference, was their upset victory over Sauk Centre, a Pre-Conference favorite. Coaches Stewart and Hazewinkle.
