POSTAL STRIKE the chippewa benson high school benson, minnesota table of contents seniors xy underclassmen activities student life junior high advertisements in memoriam mr. I. g. blood may 31,1916 — june 22,1970 The superintendent is generally looked upon by the students as a rather formidable person. The prestige of the position seems a bit overpower- ing to us. Even entering the superintendent's office on ordinary business is serious business. Yet, when we met Mr. Blood personally, even in the capacity of superintendent, he seemed businesslike-but not abrupt, serious-but not without a sense of humor. When we returned to school this fall the absence of Mr. Blood, and his empty office was noticed by many students. We then found out exactly how important the office of superintendent is. We would like to take this opportunity to show our gratitude to a man who was dedicated to the principles of professional education and per- sonal integrity. We, therefore, dedicate the 1971 Annual to the memory of Mr. Lawrence G. Blood. 4 SUSAN AABERG SHIRLEY ABNER BRIDGET ALBANI DOMINIC ALBANI JOANN ALDRICH RANDALL AMUNDSON DALE ANDERSON PAUL ANDERSON ROGER ANDERSON WANDA AMUNDSON MARIA ARANCIBIA GARY AS CHE MAN DONNA BENSON LEE ATCHISON TIMOTHY BERENS CHARLES BERGSTROM LYNN BURBANK STEVE BISCAARD JOSEPH BROTT GWEN BUCKINGHAM BECKY BURMEISTER JAMES BURNIP LOIS BYRNE PATRICK BYRNE DARLENE CHRISTENSON SUSAN CHRISTENSON JEANNE CHRISTIE STANLEY CLAUSSEN BILL CLELAND DANIEL COLLINS RANDALL CORLE ROSEMARY COLLINS JOANN CRANDALL GUSTAVO CONDEZO REBECCA CONNELLY RODNEY DIMMER DEBORAH DANIELSON JEAN DIEDERICH JOSEPH DIEDERICH MARILYN CRONEN EILEEN DOHERTY PATRICIA DOLAN ROBERT DOYLE MARLENE EICHNER DONALD ELLINGSON LOIS ERDMAN KEVIN ESPESETH MICHAEL FERRY BERNARD FJORDBAK KEITH FLATEN BARBARA FREDINE STEVEN FRENTZEL COLLEEN CADES JANET GALLAGHER RICHARD GOGGIN ROCHELLE GOULSON VALERIE CROTHE WILLIAM GROTHE ALAN GANDRUD LAUREL GILBERTSON ■UP r n CHERYL HE IKE MICHAEL HAWLEY PAUL HILLEREN ANNETTE CRUSSING VICKI GUNDERSON DEBRA HANSON CHERALYN HANSON ROSS HAUGEN LONNIE HAGEN STEVEN HIMLEY ROBERT HOLLAND MARY HOLM ARDEN HOLZHEIMER PATRICIA HOWARD DANIEL HUGHES JEANETTE HYLLAND JOHN HYLLAND DENNIS IVERSON RICHARD JACKSON ELIZABETH JORGENSON KEITH KERKEIDE ■'-•V vK MARY KILL PAMELA JOHNSON CECELIA KLANG WILLIAM KLYVE PATRICIA KNOCK CHERYL KOENEN SUSAN KOPP JACQUELINE LAGESON MARK LAGESON MICHAEL LANGFORD JANET LARSON KENNETH LARSON STEVEN MATTHEISEN BRADLEY MCDANIEL JEROME MCCEARY JOSEPH MCCEARY STEVEN MONSON LINDA NAIC ELIZABETH NELSON MARLOWE MOLDEN NOT PICTURED: NANCY ANDERSON GARY COLLINS SUSAN JEITZ TERRY SCHLUETER JOHN WEBER KAY OFFERDAHL WILLIAM O'LEARY PATRICIA OLSON DARLENE O'MALLEY THOMAS ORR TERRENCE OVERLANDER BRENT PETERSON DAVE PETERSON MICHAEL QUIGLEY DAVID RASMUSSEN CLASS OFFICERS BRUCE REGAN RALPH REIMAN FIRST ROW: V. The band marched in parades three days: Transportation Day, Kid Day (the band wore costumes too), and the day of the Grand Parade. The purposes of our Council are to develop positive personal qualities among young people, to teach democratic procedures, to promote good human relations in the school, and to provide a forum for student opinion, plus many others. The purposes of the Council are fulfilled in various ways. An opportunity is pre- sent at all meetings for members of the student body to present their opinions unless the meeting has been declared a closed session for some reason. Because the sessions were held during ninth hour this year, the necessity of being ex- cused from class to attend was eliminated. Therefore, attendance should have been quite regular for the Council members, but this wasn't always true, due to the high number of other activities also scheduled during ninth hour. As with other years, a lack of interest was evident at various times in the Council, but it did sponsor several activities and fulfill several of its purposes. Sponsored by the Student Council were: Several aspects of the Home- coming celebration, dances after football and basketball games, (plus the special event dances), do- nations to school organizations who needed financial assistance, voting at general election time IrTNovember, and many others. Though the council has no direct authority over certain aspects of the educat- ional situation here at Benson, it is possible for the Council to make known any problems that do exist. In many cases, it is also possible for the Council to implement action on the problem, or, in some cases, to find a direct solution for the problem. The cooperation of the administration in assisting the Coun- cil was greatly evident this year and very much appreciated by the Council members. 56 boys state Boy's State 1970 was held on the beautiful campus of Gustavus Adolphus College. Here with approximately 425 boys, I had the priviledge of learning first hand the fundamentals of our Government. During this week of political ac- tivity, we heard from many out- standing speakers who covered very thoroughly the three branches of our government. Being active in this 51st state of ■ ours awakened me to many of the issues of today. Also instilled in me was a new faith in our form of democratic government. I will always remember the friends met and the lessons taught in this week of enriching activity. To the American Legion and to the Benson High School I am indebted for giving me the honor or repre- senting them a truely great place --Boy's State 1970 --Kevin Johnson As the 1970 session of Girl's State drew to a beginning, 447 Minnesota girls found themselves in a hectic, fun, and interesting world on the campus of St. Catherine's College. girls state The 24th session of Girl's State was held June 7-13. Girl's State was initiated in 1947 under the guidance of the late Mrs. M. W. Knoblauch, who was the dean of the program for 21 years. The purpose of the program was designed to teach government by doing, instilling the idea that poli- tics is a science of government, and not just a means of promoting self interest. Beleving that the future of America can be intelligently guided by educated young Americans. At Girl's State we were citizens of a mythical stage, we learned the fundamentals of our govern- ment from the local level through the state level and participated in causes, campaigns, and elections. We had many notable speakers and conducted a mock session in the state capital. Girl's State is an imaginary political state but the people are very much for real. Girl's State is a taste of life. It can be anything you yourself want it to be--a huge slumber party, a homesick week, a learning experience, or just a chance to express all your dreams for your future. Girls' State is a week when an individual can take the initiative to work, create, and accomplish. Be- sices all that, that one week was a rare opportunity to find friends and exchange ideas with many wonderful girls I might otherwise never have met. That one week has come and gone but alot of things remain in me that weren't there before. I would like to close with a little history that goes like this: Many stories have been told of how Benjamin Franklin would always tip his hat when he would pass by a young person on the street. Puzzled by this a friend of Franklin’s asked him why. His reply was, In the youth of today I see the leaders of tomorrow and the fate of our nation. --Vickie Wollschlager afs FRONT ROW: D. They were Maria Arancibia from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and Gustavo Condezo from Lima, Peru. They arrived in Benson through International Fellowship Inc. in cooperation with the Benson Senior High Stu- dent Council and the Benson Kiwanis Club. The purposes of the exchange program are to have the students become better acquainted with the English language, familiarize themselves with the United States, and to exchange ideas. Through their attendance at our high school and their involvement in the life of the community, Gustavo and Maria hope to realize these purposes. These floats participated in the Benson Centenial Parade. 1970-71 foreign exchange students Gustavo's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Teo'filo Condezo. While at Benson High, Gustavo participated in sports such as football and basketball. Maria is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Urbano Aranci- bia. Although Maria didn't go out for sports she acquired many friends during her year here at Benson. Through Maria and Gustavo's stay here at Benson they not only learned about the United States, but we be- came familiar with some of their customs in South America. In 1970-71 Benson not only received two exchange stu- dents but sent one out. Our representative was Rhonda Stotesbury, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Stotesbury and a 1970 graduate of Benson High School. While at- tending school in Santiago, Chile, Rhonda stayed with the Jorge Cornjeo family. GUSTAVO CONDEZO 59 MARIA ARANCBLA RHONDA STOTESBURY gopher’s whistle FRONT ROW: M. Jorgenson, L. To keep your identity welled up inside yourself is to be selfish, but to share your thoughts is to be generous. Your ideas are not the same as mine, yet I will not know what you feel or desire, if you don't share tfiem with me. To think a thought takes little effort. To ar- range these thoughts into an idea takes creativity and imagination. But, the greatest task is to tell others your idea. FRONT ROW: S. Mills, C. Philbrick, J. Hylland, S. Skarsten. BACK ROW: B. Regan. message from rhonda Two questions which are frequently asked of me are how I happened to come to Chile and why. The first, I can only an- swer by saying that I am a Gemini and am prone to jump im- pulsively into things. I found myself in Chile before I had time to think about what I was really doing. The second question, why Chile, is easier to explain. I knew that Chile was one of the more progressive South American countries, and I more or less imagined it to be in some ways similar to the United States, only on a smaller scale. I wanted to see something different, but not too extreme. Also I knew the Andies Moun- tains formed the backbone of Chile and I have always been fas- cinated by mountains. I find Chile much more exciting than I ever expected. It is a land of infinite variety. The people themselves are warm- hearted, friendly Latins, many of Spanish descent. I was also very fortunate to come to Chile at the time I did. I was able to live here during a very important period in this country's history. . .the popular election of a Marxist presi- dent, Dr. Salvador Allende. I have learned quite alot in the past six months. . . a new lan- guage, a new independence, some new customs, but most of all by living with and meeting new people. I have learned that only customs are different. The people, no matter where they live or what language they speak, are all very much the same. REV. MANCINI BOB NELSON class of 71 As the graduating class of 1971 entered the gymnasium on Tues- day, May 25, for commence- ment exercises they heard the traditional Pomp and Circumstance.
