THE CHIPPEWA 1970 BENSON HIGH SCHOOL During the time when the pre-railroad period was still thriving, hardy pioneers laid the foundations for many communities. Situated on a flat endless prairie of tall grass, dotted by many small lakes was located one such community which attracted several railroad companies. In 1870 the town was plotted by the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Company and named by the railroad, Benson, in memory of a prominent politician and citizen of Anoka. The year 1870 also saw the organization of Swift county, named in honor of Henry Swift, governor of Minnesota, of which Benson later became the county Because of its location in the midst of one of the richest agricultural sections of Minnesota, Benson was, and still is, mainly an agricultural community. The first de- cade brought many hardships and challenges to the young town such as the smallpox epidemic of 1872, the grasshopper plague of 1876 and the fire of 1880. The community witnessed a considerable amount of development during this period, however, and with the heavy influx of settlers it prospered greatly while at the same time the people ap- peared to have a continuing confidence in its future. As the community grew and prospered, the citizens of Benson gradually became aware of the primary role a sound and energetic educational system would have to play in the life of the community. Thus the first institution of learning was constructed and has been expanded over the years to include two secondary schools, a junior and senior high school and a parochial school. Progress and application in today's fast-moving world have always been of utmost importance in the educational program of Benson, and it is for this reason that its educational system is such a vital asset to the com- munity today. The students of Benson High School see many things in 1970. We see a world moving at a deadening pace, a world filled with strife and a society where technology is be- coming more prevalent each day. But we also see reflections. Reflections a century old which reveal hardy pioneers laying the foundations for a new community. Living, growing, sweating, and dying for the community so that new pioneers might take on the Such is the story as Benson observes its centennial in this year, 1970. We have rec- ognized the pioneers who laid the foundations and the pioneers who carried on the cause. So many people, working together, toward a common goal and knowing the satisfaction of having reached that goal. seat. cause. It is for this reason we wish to recognize our community--past and present. .. . ■ Table of Contents Seniors 5 Sports 25 Activities 39 Student Life 61 Faculty '69 Underclassmen 77 Junior High 85 Advertisements 109 Benson as it appeared in 1900. Each game was characterized by an explosive offense and a hard- hitting defense, all bound to- gether by a strong team effort and an undying spirit to win. Every member of the team was part of a well-drilled team, always under the careful eyes of Coach Rist and Coach Johnson. The 5-4 overall season record made this season a winning one but it only tells half of the story. Three of the four losses were by 6 points or less. Very seldom were the final scores obvious until the final gun sounded. The games often ended with a final drive that had the fans on their feet until the last second. This year individual records were recorded for the first time in the West Central Conference. Benson had 3 players receiving honors, Keith Johnson for passing, Dan Reiman for pass receiving, and Don Ellingson set the record for kickoff returns. Four members of the squad were named to the All-Conference Team. These include Keith and Kevin Johnson, A1 Forbord and Dan Reiman, With Forbord and Reiman elected co-captains. Each game was a display of the team's willingness to give the game every effort that the game demanded. The team com- piled a record of 5-2, a very respectable record for any team. This team of Braves will give die fans of Benson a chance to see some excellant football in the near future. Many sophomores were reserves on the varsity squad. 28 Cross Country Cross Country is a demanding sport on the part of the athletes participating in the events. It is run on a course varing from 1.8 miles to 3 miles, which is the competitive distance in both conference and state meets. This sport permits a squad member to perform both as a member of the team and also as an individual. His scores are awarded according to his numerical standings in the running. The numerical scores of the first members of a team are added together, giving the team score. The team with the lowest score wins. For the first time, Benson didn't go to the region meet, having placed fourth in con- ference standings. This year's outstanding runner for Benson was Jack Weber, also designated as captain for the 1970 season. A. Holzheimer, K. Sorenson and D. Iverson were members of the team. FRONT ROW: R. Nelson, D. The 23rd session of Minnesota Girl's State was held June 12-19, 1969, in the 4-H Building on the St. Paul fair grounds. Minnesota Girl's State is a program which was be- gun in 1947 by the late Mrs. M. W. Knoblauch and its pur- pose was designed to give each of the attending girls the opportunity to become familiar with her obligations to her community, state, and nation as citizens informed and wil- ling to serve. The week I spent at Girl's State is one which I shall never forget. By becoming citizens of a mythical state, we learned the fundamentals of our government from the local level to the county and finally our state through caucuses, cam- paigns, and elections in which we were all involved. These activities were climaxed by the election of our state officers and a grand inauguration which was held in their honor. The remainder of the week was spent listening to lectures by many distinguished persons, visiting historic sights in the area, and conducting a mock session in the St. Paul capitol after electing our senators and representatives. Many lifelong memories came out of Girl's State and among them were the friendships gained. We learned to live and work together, share ideas, and ask questions when we didn't understand. We learned to be curious, be willing to do the unfamiliar and dare to try. After it was all over, what was our job? To carry back our newly acquired knowl- edge to our community and begin the process of learning once more. Girl’s State Boy’s State Boy's State was held on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus in St. Peter, Minnesota. I, along with approx- imately four hundred and thirty other Boy Staters from throughout the state of Minnesota had the opportunity to participate in Minnesota's 21st annual Boy's State. Boy's State is a dynamic opportunity to learn the processes and the organization of government by personal involvement. It is a 51st state constructed by us, its citizens, to govern ourselves. As Boys Staters we had the opportunity to hear such competent and qualified men as G. Theodore Mitau and Governor Harold LeVander. We chose our own officials in accord- ance with regular election procedure and organized and operated our own city, county, and state governments. We introduced and argued our own bills in legislature. Justice was administered by our own law enforcement agencies and courts. I thank the American Legion and Benson High School for a memorable and rewarding week. 50 FRONT ROW: G. Ascheman, M. Hawley, B. Regan, D. Benson. S. Pierce, N. Orr. SECOND ROW: L. Anderson, V. It brings forth dreams of fantasy and dreams of reality, it conveys ideals, thoughts and rationalizations. It is a pocket hole of creativity which gathers ideas. Sometimes it produces, sometimes it just collects dust. Creativity influences many things today in this fast moving world. It may come in any form or substance as long as the writer himself under- stands and can relate his purpose or idea to his readers. Creativity is an individual characteristic displayed and pondered on by Society. It may be accepted, it may be rejected, but never the less it is the value of making one's own mind reflect. C. is an organization of interested students whose goal is to find a foreign student and host family for the school year. The main purpose of this organization is not only to help educate the foreign student, but to foster better relations between the United States and foreign countries. When the school is a host to a foreign student, the foreign student is an ambassador from his or her own country and we are ambassadors that represent our country. In order to host a student, it is the chapter's duty to raise enough funds to sponsor the foreign student. The chapter receives its funds through donations of local civic groups and by the chapter's own fund raising projects. This program is not only a school function, but also a community project. The student chapter works together with a group of adults who make up an adult chapter. Together, the two chapters unite into one and share the responsibility of this great undertaking. To make this program successful, it needs to have more than just a few interested members. It is our hope that in the near future our school will be able to send a student abroad as well as recieving a foreign student. The Eagle Flyers LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Stone, D. Reiman, D. Hughes, G.
