The Student Council this year co- sponsored the Soph- omores Magazine Drive and worked on the Unified Drive. The Council also played an integral part in Homecoming and Sno-Days. The student body truly owes the Stu- dent Council a big thank you for the part it played in an efficient, effective, and productive school year for all concerned. European Travelers These eight students will travel to three major European capitals and other cities during the 1969 European Study Tour from Benson High. The group will depart from New York on July 13 and spend two weeks each in Rome, Paris and London. Side trips will be made to Italy, France, England, and Switz- erland. In each of the major cities students will live in a residence on the campus of a local uni- versity and study contemporary life, history, poli- tics and customs of the people. Students will leave London on August 21 for their flight back to the United States. Chaperone for the group will be Mr. Jax. Last summer Brenda Amundson, Vicky Bjerk, Bill Collins, and Fayola Olson traveled to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. FRONT ROW: R. Stotesbery, A. Burbank, J. Weber. BACK ROW: J. Wagner, K. Jacobson, D. AFS Club The American Field Service is responsible for sponsoring our Foreign Exchange Student, which allows Benson students to attend classes with a foreign calssmate. They also sponsor an AFS weekend in which AFS students from sur- rounding schools visit the Benson school. In or- der to sponsor such a student money is raised through a chicken supper which they hold in the spring. Future plans include sponsoring a Benson student in a foreign country. FRONT ROW: A. Benson's foreign exchange student for the 1968-1969 school year was Alfonso Martinez from Bilbao, Spain. As a visitor to the United States, Alfonso is most puzzled by the American school system. In Spain school is longer, more difficult, and less of a social activity. Alfonso likes the wide variety of sports offered at Benson and would like to have such a wide range of sports activities at his high school in Bilbao. He is also surprised at our Minnesota weather and the extremes. Alfonso likes the snow, but has never seen so much at one time. When he journeys homeward to complete his senior year at the Christian Brothers School in Bilbao, Alfonso will certainly take memories of Benson and his stay here. We at Benson High will remember him, too. Future Nurses Club FRONT ROW: M. Tostenson, P. Larson, M. Dolan, J. Jensen, S. Johnson, D. Hoverson, L. Smith, B. Larson. SECOND ROW: C. Bahl, C. Rooney, L. I didn't know what to expect when I got there. When you did get there all you needed to do was be yourself. All the boys were friendly and nice. They wanted to make new friends and do new things. We had a whole program of speeches, lectures, and meetings. These don't sound very interesting but they were designed to get the attention of everybody and they did just that. Then we had election of officials. That's when the fun began. Everybody was out shaking hands and trying to get votes. That's when you got to meet a lot of new kids. When party conventions came around everyone was so excited that you couldn't help but get excited with the rest. The two parties started campaigning and posters ended up in many interesting places. One even ended up on the top of the water- tower. When the week was over everybody was sad to leave. I know I'll always remeber my week at Boy's State. We the people of the United States hold these truths to be self-evident that. . . At Girl's State, these words and many other meanings and expressions and symbols were expressed which made myself and the other 487 girls, at Girl's State realize what a great country we live in. Girl's State was held at the 4-H Building on the state fair grounds. The first couple of days were spent studying the government from the very lowest level, the city to the county and state level. We followed all the procedures followed in the real form of gov- ernment and we were made to realize how very im- portant every detail is. The next days were the most memorable, and full of fun. On Sunday, the new governor of Girl's State was inaugurated and an inaugural tea followed to which our families were invited. Our last two days were spent visiting, the histori- cal sites of the Twin Cities and listening to guest speakers. All too soon it was time to say good-bye and depart for home--really appreciating every minute we had spent. It was an experience I wish every girl my age could have experienced, and it was one I will never forget. National Honor Society FRONT ROW: J. Peterson, V. Bjerk, A. Peterson, R. Stotesbery, M. Snow Days Mary Ann Flolo, Queen Linda Forbord, Penny Queen Bridgid Quinn Ann Collins Snow Days 1969 was really a month filled with snow days. The official week consisted of a dance featuring the Hot Half Dozen, a bake sale, an attempted snow sculpture contest and a tug of war. The senior boys won of course with the sophomores in second. The weather limited the events and the people in them. For this reason some pictures are incomplete. We are sorry but that is how the flake falls. A Squad Football Braves offensive attack FOOTBALL 68” I told the team the first day of practice that they were inexperienced and they were. Brad Svea and Jim Peterson were probably the most experienced and they proved it by the way they played all season. Our offensive line was small this year and had a couple of tough games, but they did show improvement in the last few games. Rod Gunderson and Kev John- son were two backs who really had a lot of drive and very seldom could be tackled by one man. Our defensive did a fine job this year with outstanding play from Jim Peterson, A1 For- bord, and Sam Amundson. Peterson made so many hard hitting tackles that the players sometimes had to help him back to the huddle. Tri-captains elected for 1968 were Jim Peter- son, Brad Svea, and Errol Lagred. FRONT ROW: R. This year's squad was characterized by hard hitting, speed, and the ability to score from anywhere on the field. Holding their opponents to an average of only seven points per game and scoring at better than 28 points per game, in- dicates a bright outlook for future football pro- spects at Benson. A Cross Country team consists of seven mem- bers. The first five team members to cross the fin- ish line are counted in the team score. The team score is tabulated by adding the place number of each runner. The team having the lowest score wins the meet. Each runner also participates as an individual and has his time and place recorded. The Benson Cross Country team has participated in meets with as few as two and as many as 22 teams competing. D. Orr, L. Benoit, J. Buyck. and P. Tatge led the Crosscoun- try team this past season. Coach Thompson gives daily in- structions. A Squad Basketball FRONT ROW: B. Janke, D. Peterson, K. Johnson, R. Wrestling team was District 21 champions. In spite of the gradu- ation of some very fine wrestlers off our District 21 Championship Team, we began the season as a team full of promise. At our early tourney at Hutchinson we showed up well (placed 2nd and had Mike Hawley chosen as Outstanding Wrestler) and the fu- ture looked bright. Then it started, eligi- bility, quiters, and injuries. Toward the end of the season it looked like a pretty dismal and disappointing dual meet season. How- ever, we headed into the tournaments with promise and high hopes for a chance to re- peat as District 21 Champions as well as entering contestants in the Regional State Tournaments. J. One of the essential assets of the back- field was their good speed. The linemen were very instrumental by using their size to good use. The starting members of the team were kept working to keep their posi- tion because the 9th grade team had a very good bench also. The 9th grade team averaged 19 points to their opponents 11 points per game. In the years to come this team has very high possibilities of becoming another great B. H. S. team. FRONT ROW: R. Feda, G. The Benson Junior High Wrestling Team has had an outstanding record over the past few years. While wrestling teams from Wilmar, Morris, Ap- pleton and other schools it has not lost a dual meet during this period of time. The main purpose of the program is to allow as many boys as possible to participate. To achieve this all boys have an oppor- tunity to wrestle at meets and the team score in- cludes all match scores. This causes the team score to run as high as 100 or more. This and the addition of 3 low'er weight classes of 80, 85, and 90 pounds differentiates junior high wrestling from the varsity sport. 100 Thank You We wish to express our thanks for the support and cooperation given to us by the businessmen of Benson, Clontarf, Danvers, DeCraff, and Swift Falls.
