Progressive development is the - greatest of all laws. Living under this law we students of Benson High School have better pre- pared ourselves for the ever-changing future. We have grown physically as well as spir- itually, and our disciplined minds have come to realize that nothing is ever completed, but completing. PROGRESS IS THE ACTIVITY OF TODAY AND THE ASSURANCE OF TOMORROW. Emerson. 5 We, the seniors of 1965, dedicate our CHIPPEWA to you, Mr. Grage. Since 1957 you have served the students of Benson High School. A great deal of credit can be given to you for our twenty-one consecutive football victories and our base- ball Region Six victory last spring. For your excellent and spirited coaching, the Class of '65 says Thank you. 6 A vivacious girl—she is active in GAA. The Roy Holmquists-- Margaret's family away from home. Margaret displays en- thusiasm at a game. A BRITISH TEENAGER AT BHS Benson High School has had a new smiling face this past year. Marg- aret Joan Randall, our foreign ex- change student from England, at- tended our high school as a senior. Margaret was born on September 23, 1946. She has a younger brother, Norman, who is nine years old. Her sister Jennifer was married this last August. Since Margaret was three years old, she and her family have lived in Croyden, England. Croyden is a suburb of London, and has a popula- tion of approximately 280,000. It is growing very rapidly and it is being rebuilt and modernized. Benson is a much smaller town than Margaret is used to, but she likes it. She says she is a town girl, and is not used to country all around. While in Benson, Margaret is stay- ing with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Holin- quist and family. One major difference for Marg- aret in America is a co-educational school. This is the first year she has attended school with boys. After graduation and a tour of the U.S. in July, Margaret will return to England, and will take up physiotherapy. She will attend Kings College Hos- pital School of Physiotherapy for three years. When she completes this training, she will work on the staff in a hospital somewhere as a junior physiotherapist. Margaret is one of the most well-liked and in- teresting foreign exchange students Benson has ever had. Every senior as well as younger stu- dents and teachers will verify this statement. Speaking for the senior class, We'll never for- get you, Margaret. A fine person like you will always be welcome in Benson. Long hours are spent in Biology. The Randalls await Margaret's return. HOMECOMING— 1964 Our new Senior High School played host to the 28th annual Homecoming festivities. A victorious atmosphere hovered over the student body during this week of excitement. An exuberant audience witnessed the crowning of Queen Leah and King Bob Thurs- day evening. Following the coronation an unprecedented program was presented to the royalty and alumni. Two outstanding acts were Off the Cuff Comments by Betty Doherty, and The Lighthouse-Keeper by a group of senior girls. The grand finale, Halls of Ivy, brought forth the memories of loyalty and dignity toward BHS. Many attractions accented Homecoming week. Decorated halls and a homeroom poster contest added to the spirit. Mr. Buckingham's 12th grade homeroom was vic- torious. Excitement mounted for the pepfest Friday afternoon. The first annual Powder Puff football game was played between the junior and senior girls. A wonderful homecoming was concluded with a victory over Morris, followed by the annual alumni dance. 17 MAKE BENSON’S HOMECOMING A MOST MEMORABLE ONE COMEDY, MUSIC, AND SUSPENSE HOMECOMING COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN—FIRST ROW: K. ACCEPTANCE IS THE AWARD OF N.H.S. Bob Peterson Boys State 1964 will always be classi- fied as one of the greats in my life. The most interesting part was meeting new friends. At Boys State my fellow staters and I were introduced to the fundamentals of state, county, and local government. The days were filled with speeches, posters, and rallies. Throughout the en- tire week we listened to men from all branches of the government, legislative, executive, and judicial. To the American Legion and to the Benson High School I am deeply indebted for giving me the honor of representing Benson at the 1964 Boys State. Judy Engleson Girls State is truly the most enriching experience I have ever had. At Girls State we developed a love for our flag and country because for one short week we were the leaders in our mythical state. On our shoulders rested the responsibil- ity for good city, county, and state gov- ernment. We listened to many speakers on subjects varying from the threat of communism to racial prejudice. We were instilled with true patriotism, we made many friends, and obtained memories to last forever. G.A.A. OUR LARGEST GROUP IS FUN, FUN STUDENT COUNCIL, GOVERN- MENT IN ACTION FIRST ROW: K. Although the annual staff meets only one half hour a day, they are working continuously. The business staff is busy selling ads to meet their quota. Pictures are being taken, and script is being written and then typed. The editors are kept busy with layouts, copy, and making sure the deadlines are met. All the time and effort will prove to be worthwhile when the annual is com- pleted. The annual staff hopes it will bring pleasant memories to all the stu- dents of BHS. BUSINESS STAFF--C. Fritz, J. Graduation from our new Benson High School is a great event for us. Our mem- ories of high school will be centered around our senior year. We have finished our apprenticeship to life and the time for social and self maturity has arrived. Challenge is knocking at our door while Future waits. With our ambitions and knowledge we shall set out to contribute our share to the ever-changing world. We must be prepared to apply our knowledge in a practical manner to everyday problems as the world progresses. We must strive for success and happiness as adults. With an attitude of faith in our ability, we, as seniors, are anxious to begin striving toward our goal in society. SUCCESS IN LIFE IS A MATTER NOT SO MUCH OF TALENT OR OPPORTUNITY AS OF CONCENTRATION AND PERSEVERANCE. C. W. The three princesses were announced during half-time by Paul Svingen, Student Council President. Nancy Wanberg, 1964 Sweetheart Queen, broke the suspense when she crowned the 1965 Queen at the dance. A new procedure was started this year for select- ing the candidates. Each senior social class chose two girls, making a total of twelve in all. The queen was selected from the voting of the entire senior high. Donna Neuhaus OUR QUEEN OF HEARTS Declam--FIRST ROW: Mr. Kittleson, L. Raasch, P. Svingen, G. Herfindahl, D. Cramlet, D. Ogle, M.
