Her name was Fanny Maria Jacome, a foreign exchange student from Equador. Fanny was born March 28, 1946, in Fulcan City, Equador. Her father is a businessman and a farmer and her mother is a housewife. She has an older brother who attends the University of Quite in Equador. Also she has a younger sister in the eighth grade. Fanny later moved to Ibarra City which has a population of 30,000. She graduated from the Ibarra High School and received a prize diploma from the government of the city for being the best student. On July 9 she was accepted by the American Field Service in New York City to come to the United States as a foreign exchange student. She flew from Ibarra to Chicago. Then she took a bus from Chicago to Minneapolis where she was met by her new family, Mr. Mrs. Glenn Darling and Nancy. Fanny has enjoyed school in spite of her difficulties with the Eng- lish language. This was the first time she had attended school with both boys and girls. She liked both the students and teachers that she met. Her favorite subject was speech. After graduation this spring, Fanny will remain in Benson until June 29, at which time she will tour the United States with other foreign exchange students. Next fall she will go back to Equador to study law at the University of Quite. Eagerly we have striven toward this great event in our lives This is the time when we are looking ahead to the future, to the success and happiness we hope will be ours . This is also the time for looking back. For some of us our Freshman year was our first year in good oT Benson High. Yet it was a thrill for all of us to be in high school We became more interested in school activities and were now a part of Homecoming and included in its festivities By our Sophomore year we were allowed to be in Senior Band and Chorus, Debate, and various other clubs. Some of the boys were on the first teams in football, basket- ball, baseball, and wrestling. Time passed too quickly and we were Juniors. How can we ever forget our class play One Foot in Heaven and the fun of planning the Junior-Senior Banquet Mardi Gras. Historically our Senior year will be remembered by our nation always. The as- sassination of President Kennedy grieved everyone. War still hovers over us, but we have faith in the future and hope we can contribute something to world peace . Our memories will also be centered around our last year in Benson High School-- our championship football team, the Sweetheart Ball, exchanging graduation pictures, writing in annuals, and then graduation--farewells to our friends and teachers . Ve learned the important princi- ples of government and actually put them into action by electing state, country, and local officials, and a Senate and House of Representatives. We listened to many excellent speakers and panelists who discussed topics such as American- ism, Communism and Racial Prejudices. During our stay we also toured the capitol, and held a mock session of Congress. At Boys' State we experienced govern- ment in action by forming government ourselves . The units of government ranged from the local city form to the state level. They were patterned after our own state government. My week at Boys' State was filled with campaigns, speeches, and speakers. Even though everything passed quickly, we gained many new friends and a better understanding of our government. I am grateful for being chosen and certain that the experience I had will not soon be forgotten. FIRST ROW: J. Berens, P. Sukke, D. Hughes, D. Comer, M. Sucher, A. Holmquist, R. Lokken, K. Under the coaching of Mr. Grage and Mr. Lewis the Braves fought their way to eighth place in the state and first place in the West Central Conference. The defensive squad was one of the most outstanding aspects of the team. Many times the defensive line was lighter than that of its opponent, but it was always in better condition. Not a single point was scored on it in conference play. The offensive, headed by all conference quarterback, Bill Brockmeyer, proved to be very skillful. The leading groundgainer for the team was Dave Johnson with 750 yards. Altogether the team scored 239 points to its opponent's 25. One of the most powerful players for the Braves was Dave Griffin, all state and all 1963 Season conference tackle. Others on the all confer- ence team were Dave Johnson, Bill Brock- meyer, Dave Svingen, and Paul Sukke. WRESTLING The Braves' wrestling squad fought to make the 1963-64 wrestling season an overwhelming success. Under the skillful coaching of Jerry Hess and Orlo Quame they won the West-Central Conference championship. The Braves were rated as one of the best high school wrestling squads in Minnesota. Much of the Braves power was contributed by the seniors. These seniors were Gene Anderson, Randy Espeseth, Paul Hanson, Jerome Miller, Paul Smaagaard, Mike Staton, Paul Sukke, and Delwin Syverson.
