Philharmonic Hall, fir unit of New York’s projected Lincoln Center for Performing Art , opened in a blaze of light. Steeple at Oregon State College of Edu- cation , Monmouth, Oregon, fell before hur ricane-force wind which raked the We t Coast in October causing major damage and communication breakdown. U.S. and French officials gathered to wel- come crated “Mona Lisa” os the priceless painting arrived in New York en route to a showing in Washington, D.C.’s National Gallery. National Events in Review W®€ WORLD PHOTOS The Space Needle and Monorail train were hallmarks of the successful World’s Fair in Seattle, Washington. Sabin oral vaccine was made available nationally and offered promise of complete immunity from all types of polio. Nuclear submarines USS Skate and USS Seadragon rendezvoused at the North Pole, hundreds of miles from open sea. II ! M1PB The lighthouse has stood on our shores for many years, a beacon for navigation, an eternal safeguard. By day it stands as a sentinel; by night it gleams steady assurance and kindly warning. In this same way our school stands as a beacon to light us through the vital pathways of learning. It is ever present and ever ready, a safeguard of our minds from the darkness of ignorance, a pointer of the way ahead, and a sure strength in the community. May this Night and Day edition of your CHIPPEWA serve as a finger of light in years to come, shining back upon life at Ben- son High School this past year. 2 DAT AND NIGHT AT BENSON HIGH SCHOOL DEDICA TION The class of '63 is honored to present this year's CHIPPEWA to Mr. Earl Orr who has for 12 years served on the science staff of Benson High School. Homecoming, Sadie Hawkins Day, the Sweetheart Ball, pass too quickly and are gone. Each of the past years has been highlighted with certain events. As Freshmen we began taking an active part in school activities by electing Banner Bearers, Merlyn O'Malley and Mitchell Boone. As Sophomores we gained the privilege of attending school dances. However, our greatest thrills were yet to come. Juniors, and we had reached the age of responsibility. We were older upper- classmen but we didn't feel any older. Everyone was in an up-roar as class rings arrived. Then came the all important event--the Junior-Senior Banquet. These were years that will go down in history. Ole Miss brought up the vio- lent segregation problem, andJohnGlen circled the globe. The Cuban Crisis arose and war loomed overhead. There were the usual amount of fads dominating the classrooms; the bubble hairdo, hair bows, and tinted hair all atop, hooded sweatshirts and short kiltie skirts. But now the graduation which looked so exciting a year ago is pushed from our thoughts while we enjoy these last months of school. The last time this feat had been accomplished was in 1953. The Braves big bruising defensive line was outstand- ing all year. They held the opponents to four points a game. While the powerful of- fensive backfield averaged twenty-seven points a game. Through a combination of good leadership and individual effort, the Benson Braves had a very successful year. BENSON 15 . STUDENT LIFE THE “1962” HOMECOMING The 1962 Homecoming had two very special features. Benson High School, who won its first Homecoming football game since 1958, defeated Willmar by a score of 27 to 6. On Thursday evening the royalty, Queen Joan Nelson and King Merlyn O'Malley, took their thrones. Joan's attendants were Ann Himley, Mary McCarthy, Pat O’Leary and Betty Pederson. Merlyn s attendants were Pat Hawley, Frank Amundson, Kevin Quinn and Jim Kvam. The Banner bearers were Mike Coy and Chris Holmquist. A program of talent was given to entertain the royal party, and to welcome the alumni. Features of this program were pantomines of such hit records as Sherri and Ahab the Arab. '•' The Homecoming activities this year included a bonfire before the Thursday night cornation program; the annual appearance of the German band before school Friday; and a peptest out on the football field Friday afternoon. The 1962 Homecoming was one of the best, ever. 58 HOMECOMING ROYALTY--FIRST ROW: M. Coy, P. Hawley, C. Holmquist, B. Lang, K. Quinn, C. Holmquist. SECOND ROW: A. Himley, J. Kvam, B. Pederson, M. SECOND ROW: Gladys, A. Douglas; Karena, B. Dahl; Hilda, B. Gilronan; Charlotte, A. Holmquist; Mae, O. Forbord. OUR COUSIN FROM SWEDEN THE STILL ALARM The play is actually a satire. The author is showing the Englishmen's reactions to the an- nouncement of a hotel fire. All the characters remain very calm and nonchalent. Kaufman it would seem is actually saying that this is the Englishmen's reactions to most situations in life. THE MAN IN THE BOWLER HAT This is a play within a play. Actors are re- hearsing their lines in preparation for the per- formance of a melodrama. The title of the play is significant since the director of the play is a man in a bowler hat. There is an element of surprise since the audience is not aware of the play within a play until the last line of the play. ONE FOOT IN HE A VEN Ronny, P. Rooney; Molly; G. Johnson; Eileen, S. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JUNIOR CLASS PLA Y Rev. Spence accepted a call and he and his family moved into a new parsonage. It was run down and badly in need of repair. Eileen and Hartzell, his teen-age children, did not like the idea of living there at first but they soon met Louise and Ronnie and the other young people from the congregation. After many hardships, Rev. Spence suc- ceeded in uniting the people of his parish, getting a new church built, and freeing himself from the accusations of herasy. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ STATE David Tatge Boys' State was an exciting experience where one could become more famil- iar with the processes of state and local government by actually taking part in it. Through campaigns, rallies, making speeches, etc., it was possible to make friends with many boys while learning prin- ciples of government at the same time. My week at Girls' State is an experience I will never forget. We carried on government by electing mayors, city councils, a governor, a secretary of state, plus many other local and state officials. One of the most exciting days of this week was spent at the state capitol where we held a mock session of congress. Through these activities we learned government by living it 80 and made many lasting friendships. Janet M. The young man's name is Tom Wingfield, whose mother Amanda Wingfield wanted her daughter married. The young daughter, Laura Wingfield, however, did not desire such an advanture. Laura was crippled by a childhood disease and led a separate life with her glass collection, the glass menagerie.” The play is climaxed with the appearance of a young gentleman, Jim O'Connor, whom Tom had invited to dinner. Amanda's advancement was soon crushed when Jim told them he was already engaged to be married. Amanda seemed to take this as Tom's fault. Soon after this Tom left to pursue the adventurous type of life he had always dreamed of. Laura, that's not all ... And you used to call me Blue Roses.
