Seniors Classes Organizations Sports Student Life Faculty Advertisements Index 5 29 45 61 Z5 81 85 DEDICATION The class of '60 wishes to thank you, Mr. Grimstad, for what you have done to make Benson High a school of which we are proud to be grad- uates. As you have so faithfully served as our prin- cipal for the past twelve years, we dedicate to you our 1960 Chippewa. 4 CLASS OFFICERS President, Dennis Hughes; Student Council, James Aust; Vice President, Eugene Ellingson; Treasurer, Edward Arneson; Secretary, Micael Gallagher. As the time for saying our good-byes draws near, we realize that graduation will not be just the grand time we anticipated. Now we begin to feel sad about leaving, yet we smile to ourselves as we think back. As green freshmen, most of us reached the exciting age of fifteen and were eligible for Driver's Training. As this was our first year to participate in the Homecoming program, we chose Joe Bach and Steve Kufrin as banner-bearers. Our first year in Senior High promoted us downstairs in the left section of the auditorium. Remember the thrill of being admitted to the school parties? Some of us were also honored by being chosen to wait tables at the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Finally we reached the age of responsibility! Juniors! After numerous petitions for their early arrival, we decided Everybody Wants Denny's Ring. The Whole Town's Talking and the whole town was talking about the success of our Jr. Class Play, which Miss A. Johnson directed. The highlight of the year was our Jr.-Sr. Banquet. Misplacing driftwood and mixing the color combinations didn't halt the success of our Seaside Retreat. Truthfully we didn't feel any older or more learned for being Seniors. Margie Johnson and Denny Rutledge reigned over our last Homecoming. Our class play Dear Ruth was a great success. The highlights finishing our Senior year were the banquet, prom, skip day, and finally commencement. We, the Juniors of Benson High School, were the underclassmen preparing to take our turn as leaders. We enjoyed presenting our first class play, which thanks to Miss Johnson, was a big success. With anticipation for our senior year we gloried in the pos- session of our class rings. This year gave us the responsibility and pleasure of entertaining the seniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We hope it will always be a memorable occasion for them. We know that we will never forget it. FIRST ROW: M. Skarsten, R. Skare, L. Stay, S. Saulsbury, S. Weber. SECOND ROW: Mr. Quame, Ad- viser, P. Our main worry wasn’t getting to class on time, but finding the right room. We thought the halls were an endless mass of people, but gradually we came to feel at home. Hard, continuous practice precedes the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. Our director, Miss Anita Anderson, with every bit of her persistence and effort put forth for our benefit, leads us in various songs fit for everyone’s listening enjoyment. As a part of our exchange concert program, we were hosts to the Litchfield High School Choir. In turn, our Benson High School Choir journeyed to Morris to present them with our very best efforts towards a good concert. Our choir made an appearance on the television station KCMT on December 12, 1959, for the 2nd time. Our annual Christmas and Spring concerts also were taped and recorded over the radio station KBMO. 33 CHORUS FIRST ROW: D. Thue, L. Undman, K. Dale, K. Gjerdingen, V. Wordelman, L. Ayl- ward, K. The Chippewa has been an annual publication of Benson High School for many years. We, as staff mem bers of the 1960 Chippewa feel we have published the best Chippewa yet! Having pushed it through the many stages of de- velopment, the struggles of producing the Chippewa will remain clear in our minds for many years to come. Dummy copies, pictures, script, and ad pages all begin to take shape as they year rolls on. High- lighting the year, the anticipated annual arrives, bring- ing with it memories for all of us. Publishing an All-American rated newspaper is the chief concern of the Gopher’s Whistle Staff. For the last three years our staff has been proud to accept an All-American award. The Gopher's Whistle, edited by Dennis Hughes, with assistant editors Marge Johnson and Beth Perrizo and staff members published our school paper once a month. The 22 members of the staff worked hard to produce a top-grade newspaper for Benson High School. GOPHER’S WHISTLE EDITORS: Marjorie Johnson, Dennis Hughes, Beth Perrizo. BASKETBALL The season started out slow for the Braves, but due to hard work, the determination of Coaches Eckhoff and Nelson, and the increasing support of the student body, the team made very promising progress. Excitement and enthusiasm summed up the final games of the season. Lowell Mogck, John Streed, and Spencer Svor were nominated by Coach Eckhoff as representatives of the basketball team as Athletes of the Year. John Raw was voted the most valuable player by the boys physical education classes. With only three seniors graduating, things look bright for the 1960-61 season of the Benson Braves. The twelve boys that went out for wrestling ended up with a remarkable 11-1 record. The only defeat was at the hands of Brainard. February 6, 1960, they competed in the West-Central Conference meet at Litch- field. Placing 3rd in the Conference meet, Coach Victor Wilson and Assistant Coach Orlo Quame entered their full team in the District Meet at Benson February 20. The eight boys who went on to the Regional Meet at Brainard February 25 were: Mike Gallagher Gene Iverson Shelly Ahrndt Rog Vergin Dick Naig Tom Huston Jerry Cronen Larry Aust Golf Team 1959-60 Golf for the first time was played in the fall during the 1959-60 school year. A veteran team returned to continue the excellent playing of last spring. A winning string of nine dual meets in a row is still going, although second in the district, is the best the team can place. Again three boys were sent to the regional, i.e. Mike Syverson, Art Kvam, and Dan Colness. The conference golf meet will be scheduled in May of 1960 so the results are not complete. Ben- son placed third last year; two strokes behind Morris and Sauk Centre who were tied for first place. LEFT TO RIGHT, STANDING: Art Kvam, Mike Syverson, Paul Lokken, Jim Johnson, Danny Colness. The boys on this team accomplished more and were members of the best tennis team organized since this sport began at B.H.S. Mr. James Norman, who is no longer on our faculty, was the adviser for this well-represented team. The team placed second in the West-Central Conference meet in Willmar, May 16. Some of our team journeyed on to the District meet, held in Morris on the 21st of May. MEMBERS OF THE TEAM 0 Dick Jensen •• Terry Sv ingen Dennis Hughes • Bruce Murphy • Hank Heiniche • Ken Johnson Richard Bogie 56 --Lettermen BASEBALL Maintaining about the same record in the '58 season as in the '59 baseball season, the Benson High School Braves scored seven wins and two losses. Our baseball team was coached by Mr. A1 Grage. At the end of the season, our seven wins were; Appleton 0-9, Glenwood 0-2, Sauk Centre 1-4, Morris 3-8, Willmar 3-5, Hancock 4-5, Starbuck 6-8. Our two losses were; Litchfield 4-3, and our dis- trict game with Chokio 5-4. The Benson-Montevideo game was can- celled because of rain. Jim Gallagher BASEBALL Mike Gallagher FIRST ROW: W. Mr. Leon Brockmeyer is probably greatly responsible for his well-represented track team. Brock” is the coach of one of the most enthusiastic sports known in Ben- son High School. The track team deserves a lot of credit and our utmost loyalty towards supporting the boys. One fact we wish to make mention, concerning the track team is the majority of the team are underclassmen. Regardless of this fact, some of the boys placed in the Conference meet at Willmar, the District meet at Breckenridge, and the Region meet held in Glenwood. Many moments were recalled during the Homecoming festivities of Benson High. The high point of the coronation program was the crowning of Queen Margie Johnson and King Denny Rut- ledge. Other members of the royalty were: June Iverson, Marlene Landmark, Nancy Nelson, Diane Sather, Gene Ellingson, Mike Gallagher, Dennis Hughes, and Lynn Knode. Mitchell Boone and Merlin O'Malley represented the freshman class as bannerbearers. Some of the highlights of the program were: The Mummy Song by a group of sophomore girls, music by the German Band, a hill-billy skit, a pep song, an Indian War Song, piano music, and several vocal numbers. Friday afternoon due to rain, the Homecoming parade which this year was going to be a street pep fest, was cancelled. An auditorium program served as a substitute. A new idea in floats was introduced. All of the home- rooms made banners which were carried by some of the students. The winning banner, which read May they rest in pieces, was from homeroom 210. A pep fest followed, during which Lars Broton, a member of the un- defeated 1934 football team, gave an enthusiastic pep talk and led some cheers. Friday night was the most important phase of Homecoming, the game. After a thrilling first half, the Ben- son High School Band formed a crown and Queen Margie was presented. HOMECOMING AND PARTY SNAPS GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ STATE JIM AUST MARILYN JOHNSON A wonderful experience filled with learning about our government, making new friends, and completely en- joying ourselves--this is the way we would describe our week at Girls' and Boys' State. We were exposed to our governmental system in a way possible only through extensive planning that neither of us will ever forget. We got a look directly at the functions of our government through the men that ordinarily make it run. After we were totally familiar with the government of the State of Minnesota, we fashioned our own party systems to govern ourselves. Girls' State had divisions named after Indian tribes, Boys' State had divisions named after our own familiar cities and counties. Then began the hustle and bustle of making ourselves known to the great- est number of voters, while we participated in any of many other activities: the newspaper; athletic teams; a band; a golf tournament; swimming; party rallies that were riots; contests to see how much we had learned; jam sessions; and many other activities. Because of the friendships we gained and the interest in politics and government that was instilled in us we hope that we will become better citizens. The honor of having been chosen Benson's representatives is a high- light of our high school years and is certainly an honor we will never forget. 65 Queen Marlene Left to Right: Vivian Lee, Betty Johnson, Kathy Dale, Sandy Hughes, Marlene Landmark, Diane Holtan, June Iverson, Nancy Nelson, and Karen Dale. 66 Arguments, tears, pretty girls, and work, work, work--all these things went together to make the 1960 Sweetheart Ball the best ever. The dance, held Feb. 19, was Benson’s third annual Sweetheart Ball. We kept some of the old traditions and started some new ones. The 1959 Queen of Hearts, Jackie Johnson, returned and crowned our new queen, Marlene Landmark. Queen Marlene’s two attendants were Diane Holtan and Sandy Hughes. The three happy girls were each given a small rhinestone crown, a gift from the senior class. A very pleasant atmosphere in which to have a wonderful time was provided by the red, white, and pink decorations in the little theater. The pink stage was the center of interest, with a crepe paper ceiling and many red cupids hanging around the room completing the picture. We, the senior class of 1960, hope to establish the Sweetheart Ball as a Spring Homecoming. ’’SEASIDE RETREAT” JR. - SR. Ellingson, Donald Shields; B. Johnson, Lila, neighbor girl; A. Darling, Taxi driver; C. Hanson, Sally, neighbor girl. The main plot is the attempt of Mr. Simmons, a wealthy paint manufacturer, to play the part of a cupid in bringing his daughter and junior partner together. He gives his wife quite a shock when he informs her that her charming daughter, Ethel, is to marry Chester Binney, the junior partner who no girl has ever given a second look. Mr. Simmons believes that every woman wants the man that every other woman wants, and con- ceives the plan of inventing a few love affairs for the unromantic Chester. A fictious love affair with a famous movie star is created. Mr. Simmons plans work out quite well. Mr. Binney becomes the center of intere until the actress and a very jealous lover appear on the scene. Problems and complications of all types arise for Mr. Simmons and his partner, but they weather them all and everything turns out as only Mr. Simmons could have planned. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY FIRST ROW: F. Barnard, Albert Kummer; J. Streed, Harry Wilkins; S. Olson, Edith Wilkins; M. Johnson, Ruth Wilkins; L. Knode, Bill Seawright; Mr. Abraham, Director. SECOND ROW: B. SENIOR CLASS PLAY This year the seniors starred in a three-act comedy, Dear Ruth.” Ruth got into a peck of trouble because of her darling little innocent sister, Miriam, who wasn't innocent at all! It seemed Miriam liked to write letters and carried on a correspondence with several members of the armed forces. The only thing wrong with this was that she used her sister Ruth's name and pictures. Miriam’s antics thoroughly disturbed Ruth, all the members of her family, and the armed forces as well. These escapes, however, made great comedy, which entertained all. Our thanks goes out to Mr. Abraham who made the play a great success. 71 HERCULE'S NIGHT OUT'1 Betty Lou.......L. Buroker Hercules Nelson . G. Foster Gerald Brown . . . J. Hanson Wilbur Maxwell . K.
