We have used this theme because we believe the pictures and words in this yearbook are a rep- resentation, not only of the students of our school, but of the youth found in all schools throughout the country. 2 Dedication We Dedicate ... To our mothers and fathers whose love . . . help . . . and encouragement have made these years of high school possible, this Outline of Youth, the 1959 CHIPPEWA. 3 Scenes of Benson High School—1958-1959 To the north--the football field To the south--the newest addition, a 72 car parking lot --the tennis To the west of B.H.S. courts SENIORS Buying megaphones for Pep Club . . . standing in line for hot lunch . . . the nervous anticipation of the waiting be- fore the curtain opened on our plays . . . the agonizing minutes before a semester test . . . these are the joys and tribulations we all have shared together through our six years in Benson High. Remember our first days in Jr. High? Those were the days when you couldn't open your locker and you had to carry your books around all day--that's when you didn't eat lunch because your lunch was in your locker. By the time we reached our freshman year we had over- come the small difficulties we had had in the 7th grade and we looked forward to being represented at Homecom- ing by Todd Wordelman and Ver Berens, who were our ban- ner-bearers. We were led into our Sophomore year--and Senior High-- by our class officers. Gloria Antolick, Ronnie Hanson, Mary Maher, and Gloria Larson. Click, click, click went some of our fingers and pound, pound, pound went others. These are the sounds we made while typing. Remember how hard you would work on an assignment to get an A and then make a mistake in the last line? The exciting moment of that year was when we served the juniors and seniors at their banquet entitled Underwater Fantast. Double Barrel Detective Story, our junior class play--the hustle and bustle of the stage crew and the actors with their noses in their books trying desperately to learn their lines. Mary Maher, our President, was ever present to help us at games, etc. because we as juniors sold refresh- ments. We chose the theme Around the World in 80 Days, for the banquet, and we were very happy that the seniors were pleased with our choice. Homecoming 1958-59, our last and most treasured. After many days of waiting we were all very happy at the outcome of the coronation with Donna We rsinger as our Queen and Vern Berens taking the Kingly title. Soon after, the senior class play was being rehearsed. Did you ever see such a bunch of nervous kids and that make-up ugh, it tasted like chalk. As graduation nears we look back on our years in high school and think of them as good years--some of the best we'll ever know. Benson is no exception. Their baseball team is coached by Bob Alti- villa. The Braves belong to the West Central Conference. Their record for the 1958 season was seven wins; Willmar 3-5, Sauk Centre 11-13, Montevideo 1-10, Morris 5-27, Litchfield 3-4, Willmar 2-0, Hancock 1-9, Starbuck 0-8, and two losses; Glenwood 2-1, Willmar 2-0, Benson ad- vanced to the district tournaments but they lost in the first round of the tournament to Elbow Lake. The score was 4-0. It's off! 55 Tennis in Second Year at Benson High 1958 was only the second year that Benson has had an organized Tennis team. Most of the time was spent learning fundamentals. With im- proving players, the 1959 season should prove to be more successful. In the matches during the year, Benson lost to Morris twice and lost to Montevideo once. In the Triangular Meet at Monte- video. Benson placed first, and Ben- son found itself placed fifth in the West Central Conference held in Willmar. Coach J. Norman, A. Ricke, H. Heinecke, F. Barnard, K. Johnson, T. Svingen, D. Hughes, R. Jensen, B. Murphy. 56 In the Spring a Young Man’s Fancy Put a long drive off the tee. Turns to ... Golf During last year the golf team had a lot of good material and most of the boys returned this year. Quite a few mure boys are going to join the team this year and next year it is hoped that the team will do even better. Throughout 1958, the Benson golf team placed second, three times. In the District 21 meet at Benson, Benson placed third. The West Central Conference was held at Willmar and Benson placed sixth. Keep your eye on the ball. FIRST ROW: M. Syverson, M. Keintz, D. 'THE HOUR OF TRUTH The plot of this play deals with the honesty of a secretary of a bank. John Baldwin (Ralph Bolt) has been bribed by the president of his bank not to testify against him in his upcoming trial. His decision affects not only his life but his family's as well; Mrs. Baldwin (Jewel Rear), Evie Baldwin (Vivian Lee), Robert Baldwin (James Rohne), Marshall (Dennis Hughes), and even the maid (Sharon Fennell). John Baldwin refuses the bribe and is offered a much better job because of his honesty. THE LEADER OF THE PEOPLE Why can't the family be understanding? That is what Jody (Richard Bogie) wonders. Grandfather (Richard Jensen) as well as the rest of the family feels that he should be a more active person. Jody is continually told of how his Grandfather, while traveling West, had been The Leader of the People. While the family was talking one night, Grandfather found out that they really didn't think much of his leadership and from that point on he lets his actions speak louder than his words. 60 People” Chosen at District Play Festival HERBIE MAKES THE TEAM Herbie (Dick Hergesheimer) somehow leads his mother (Jane Rois) and sisters (Susan Colness, Marilyn Johnson, and Barbara Anderson) to believe that he is playing on the basketball team when really he is only the manager. After much deliberation, he confesses to them that he is not a player. Because of illness of two of the players, Herbie actually gets to play on the team after all. FIRST ROW: D. Larson, F. Debating a very timely question (Resolved: That the United States should adopt the Russian system of education.) Team members matched wits with students in Montevideo, Glenwood, Alexandria, and Moorhead. Highlight of the season was the 18 team Regional Debate Tournament at Moorhead College. This year's team participated in a number of firsts. The '58-'59 team was the first to present a debate before the Benson Kiwanis Club. It was this team that presented the first debate to the entire Benson High School student body. It was also this team that made an initial appearance before the Benson P.T.A. This past year also saw B.H.S. sponsor the first debate tournament within the past decade. It is hoped that the debate team will continue to expand its activities in the future. FIRST ROW: D.
