At the time it held no particular fancy or fascination for me, but over the years it has become one of my favorite pieces of reading, for in it I find not only a splendid ex- ample of the sonnet but the expression of another human who had problems and troubles and who surmounted them in the most remarkable manner. Milton's blindness was a bitter blow to him, ultimately, however, he accepted it and did some of his greatest and most noteworthy writing in total darkness. As I go about the tasks and duties of the day I frequently reflect on the Sonnet's opening line, When I consider how my light is spent, and reshape them in one of two ways. I ask myself, How am I spending my light or my life? I ask myself whether I have done the right thing or the expedient, I ask myself whether my smile is the reflection of an inner feeling or an exercise for facial muscles. I ask myself whether the words of my mouth andthe deeds of my hands are for the benefit of my fellowmen or are they selfish expressions for personal gain. , , . . . . 1 I am certain you can find much more to live for and live by in Milton s Sonnet. Won't you read it and consider how your light is spent? yn'+.11 !C,Jf-fe Robert K. Go to it! R. C. Struble TO THE CLASS OF '60 The best of luck in achieving suc- cess in reaching whatever goals you have set in life. Meet your obstacles with vigor and determination and they cease to be formidable. I 1 Q . H. E. Hilgendorff William H- STMGS, Jr. John F. Lawson Mrs. Odessa B. Bengston Ausfen 0, Larson, Jr' Norman C. Gaugler Howard E. Speck, Sr. Robert K. Parish Harry Rothwell, Jr. 5eC efafY President Vice-President Treasurer Rapid community growth during the past few years followed by a tremendous increase in pupil enrollment has confronted the Board of School Directors with problems for which there has been no easy solution. To provide physical 'facilities to accommodate the larger en- rollment the Directors have completed the following projects: h Sl H' h S h I the Cecelia Sn der Junior High School- S K Faust Elementary School- renovation of the Trevose and Andalusia Te enior ig coo, y , .. , Elementary Schools layout and grading of the football field, a'new baseball field, and erection of a field house for selling refreshments. Transportation has been another matter which required attention. During the past year the Directors purchased eleven new busses and constructed a garage to provide for their maintenance. But facilities alone are not the Directors' only concern. To maintain a high level of achievement teachers' salaries have been improved nd standardized Funds have been set up for after school enrichment and make-up classes. Student tuitions to summer school enrich- a . ment courses have been paid. ln addition, the Directors itogether with the Township Supervisorsj form the Joint Recreation Board which provides summer recreation to children throughout the township. We, the Class of 1960, have benefited from the ceaseless efforts of our Board of School Directors, and now, as we take our places as citizens in an expanding community, we look to the Directors to continue to provide for Bensalem Township's endless education problems. . 14' 'fd ' 4 M w w - , b X ,A PTi2,?K' 1 4316 fiffliviilf , K . ., 1 gf f as . , ug, ,nm-. ,515 wi-an .vm if 'M 'mn- A -3 --Q 3- - 1.:A i 'I . , sv 352- HGEPW' Q., m X ' - 4 5?'2i: .i4:fL3?4.1'. gg - if , y, ii - 7 H X - --, xiii W NANCY MORAN ANNE MORRIS VIVIEN MOSCHIDES STEPHANIE MOSKALUK FLORENCE MULLER GEORGE PARALIS BLANCHE NELSON JOSEPH PAUL ANNETTA REBER CLAIRE PARALIS ROBERT PARKER KATHERINE PENTZ MILDRED RIEF ROBERT RHIEL RICHARD RI-LOADS ARMANDO RICCI FRANKLIN RILEY DANIEL Rosxos. FOOTBALL Returning after several years of inactivity, Mr, Van Horn guided the Varsity Owls to a fourth place in the Lower Bucks County League. lniuries and fumbles worked against the team towards the end of the season, but the spirit remained high and the team hustled every minute of play. Len Rutecki's smashing drives, Jules Loieski's startling catches, and Bob Mudie's long passes paced the squad to a 4-3-1 league record. Since the Owls are only losing seven seniors, big things are expected next year. Leaving the team are: Jules Loieski, Arthur Laycock, William Roeger, Alwyn Gougler, James Harkins, Robert Bendzlowicz, and Leonard Rutecki. All the starting players can be proud to say they played in the first game won on the new Bensalem Field by romping Woodrow Wilson 39-6. Let's hope it's the first of many more to come. With a lot of school spirit and an abundance of hard work, Coach Reber's Owlettes finished a successful season by placing second in the interscholastic league. Their all-over record was seven wins, two ties, and one loss. Having scored 26 goals against their opponents, they had only 7 scored against them. Sue Call, scoring 10 goals for her team, placed second in league competition, while Diane Muller placed third with 8 goals to her favor. Three team members were placed on the all opponent team, including Frances DeMuro, Aileen Plunkett, and Sue Call. Nine seniors were lost this year: C. Cobler, B. Ervin, M. Hughes, A. Plunkett, B. Exceptional team work and exhaustive practice is the clue to the team's success. Also part of this is due to the efforts of Carol Bredbenner, who netted enough baskets to capture second place scoring honors ofthe Lower Bucks County League. Hats off to the Owlettes and theifunblemished 12-O record and may they have many, many, more successful seasons to help fill that trophy case in the lobby. KNEELING, left to right: P. Dost, R. BOYS' BASKETBALL The year T960 marks a slight change for our Owls and we hope that this change of coaches will prove successful. Coach Rhiel plans to turn out a fine team still retaining all the tact and skill learned in the past. Junior Varsity, under the direction of Mr. Shaup, has made great strides in skill and ability. With new supervision and the lessons of the past, both teams should prove able defenders and oppo- nents for our rivals. TOP ROW, left to right: G. Patton, H. Thorpe, N. Tomlinson, R. Pucher, R. The students are represented every time the Council has a meeting. Ideas, complaints, and problems are discussed by the Council. Then, if possible, the ideas are put into use, and the problems are solved. The student government sup- ports our clubs in many ways. Another spring is here and another class is prepar- ing to leave the familiar halls of Bensalem . . . We laughingly look back upon the years and see ourselves as bewildered seventh graders, entering a never-before-used building, still in the process of being constructed. It took many weeks before we stopped getting lost in this new building but, before long, we were plunged into our second term as we became eighth graders. A few of the brave ones were seen participating in various activities, but the Class of 1960 did not get into full swing until we became Freshmen. At the beginning of this all-important year our num- bers were increased from 230 Cin our first yearl to 290. During this year we participated in the First Annual Blue and Gray Night and various sections took trips to places of interest. We looked forward to the year when we could have class officers and after a summer of fun, we returned to Bensalem once more as eager Sophomores. Class dues and an able Class President, David Freese, guided us through the year to our first important proiect as a class, the Valentine Day dance, Sweetheart Swing. Fate struck a brutal blow and on the big night a mountain of snow tumbled earthward and the dance had to be re-scheduled and re-named: Never Too Late for Love. The Class of 1960, by this time was well represented in all school functions including sports, publications, dramatics, musical activ- ities, and clubs. One group traveled to West Point Military Academy while another took a trip to the Schubert Theater in Philadelphia, where some students from our English Department saw the stage play, The Music Man. Class President, Robert Bendzlowicz, gavel in hand, began his iob where Dave left off, as we started our Junior year. Class dues and Christmas card sales in- creased the size of our treasury as we planned for the Junior Dance, highlight of the Christmas holidays, Mistletoe Magic. With our school rings on order, it was not long before we began to work on the biggest event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, l'll Remem- ber Tonight. The beauty of the gymnasium in an array of pink fantasy, made worthwhile the long hours and tedious work spent in decorating. Climax of the mem- orable evening was a moonlight cruise on the Wilson Liner. Many of our classmates were presented with letters and awards on the First Annual Awards Night Banquet, sponsored by the Student Council. Class rings arrived on graduation day of the Class of '59 and we soon began showing them off to our underclassmen friends and members of our families. Many of us worked during the 1959 summer vaca- tion to put aside some money for future education and also to defray the cost of Senior year expenS6S. Owl staff members began working on the 1960 Owl early in the summer, and had sixteen pages completed by the beginning of September. At last, we had reached the final chapter in our high school careers, we were FINALLY Seniors! Our friends and fellow students were now leaders in school affairs, and we realized our great responsibility to our administration, our teachers, and our underclassmen. First big event of the year was Kampus Kickoff, a real football season starter. Due to the hard work of many Senior boys, football season was one of the most successful we had seen, and with Bensalem's school spirit growing, we Seniors plunged into another Christ- mas Card sale which further increased the size of our bulging treasury. Senior pictures soon were taken, arrived and swapped by all. Although we were unable to hold class meetings, we set up an Executive Board and most Senior responsibilities were taken care of through the board and the able guidance of James Harkins, Class President. The month of March was most important in our Senior year. Yearbook received its finishing touches, name cards arrived, the Senior Class play, Gidget, was a smashing success, and we hap- pily began to get into the routine of all-day sessions while the anticipation of the Washington trip mounted. We never did get used to seeing the sun rise while eating breakfast and how we did miss the leisurely lunch hour, dancing and listening to the latest hits on the iuke box. Three sleepless nights and a mountain of fun told us that our days at Bensalem would soon be coming to an end, but we eagerly looked forward to the Prom our Juniors were preparing, Some En- chanted Evening, land it really wasll. Theme, decora- tions, and music of top caliber put the finishing touches on the pictures on the wall of memory. The usual de- luge of final exams having passed, all too soon Bac- calaureate, Commencement, and Senior Reception flew by. In the years to come, as we take our 1960 Owl from the shelf and leaf through its pages, we will think of the many happy hours at our alma mater. The girls' basketball championship, the extemporaneous speaking contest, our Some Enchanted Evening, the happy hours we spent eating and listening to the music of the iuke box, and the hours of laughter as we went through our growing pains at Bensalem. Tomorrow, when we sing our alma mater at Commencement, we must remember that this is not an end, but only a beginning - for as we go on to college or our iobs, we shall always have within us the bright memories of our school years. These years are now completed and what we have gained physically, mentally, and spiritually, we will hold for the rest of our lives. So reads the history of the Class of 1960. So, diploma in hand, we hang the pictures on the wall of memory. 107 NON- 'Yoe 61-CJGYNK eonpexaixoo and wa o'i We ska? 'owe wade Qfixs qeat'oo0V. 9094x- 'oXe.
