The fqfifrucfffflt-mmf Sinff Q 0 h Were advice a commodity that people accepted readily, I would advise you along sev- eral different lines, but ad- vice being what it is, allow me to make what I feel to be a few pertinent observations. You are the product of a governmental and education- al system which is unique in the history of the world. You are part of a society so dif- ferent from the remainder of the world that we are con- stantly being attacked by oth- er powers. Through our in- stitutions, man as an individ- ual has risen to new and un- heard values. You will be tested, teased and perhaps even be placed under physi- cal pressure to change your outlook. You will have to be firm in your convictions that ours is the only way of life MR. RISING if mankind, as we know it, is to survive. Communism, our nation's greatest foe today, is only a different word for dictator- ship, which your study of history has shown you has been tried and tried through the ages. Democracy incorporates some elements of many different governments. It is based on Christian principles, the truth of which are beyond reproach. If you accept the above, then you must stand ready to prove to the rest of the world that the way of life we know not only can function elsewhere, but if war and its use- less slaughter is ever to stop, it must come from a full appreciation of the dignity, the rights and the worthwhileness of the individual. The task confronting you is tremendous, for there are those among us who would for personal selfish reasons undo us right here in our own community. You must be prepared not only to assist the unenlightened abroad, but the unappreciative at home. You must learn to rise above the petty bickerings of our present day, and engage the great issues which must be solved. The opportunity you have to assist in bringing about a cure for a sick and ailing world is indeed a great challenge. Do not back away from it, for if you do, those in- stitutions which we hold in such great esteem may be lost forever. You are equal to your share. Strive mightily to see it done. WF -s .. A 744554665 Wm ,W Q. to , After losing their first three games of the sea- son, Darrell Sawyer's Benhi gridsters bounced back with a bang to end the season with a 4 win and a 4 loss record. The first loss was to Rutland by a score of 35-12, the second to Bellows Falls, 25-0, and the third to Springfield by a score of 6-0. It was here that the transformation started to take place. The Cats were sick of being the underdogs, and when Coach Saw- yer discovered a sensational freshman quarterback, J. P. Ryan, things were soon to change. With Ryan as quarterback, Coach Sawyer was able to move Kip Crosier, one of the best ball carriers Bennington has ever known, to the right halfback position, where he would have a better opportunity to display his running ability. Crosier later earned the title of The Touchdown Kid. Coach Sawyer now had what he thought was one of the best teams in the state: B. Cross and Mau- sert at ends, Dickie and D. Cross, tackles, Gage and Harvey at guards, McLenithen at center, Ryan at quarterback, Crosier, right halfback, Bruso at full- back, and LaCross at left halfback with Reed and Dailey as good substitutes. The Big Little Coach now set out to prove his theory. The Cats' next opponent was Mount Saint 'lo- seph's of Rutland. The game was at Rutland, and the sports writers forecasted that it would be a close game, but their prediction was blown sky-high when the Cats came home with a 33-12 victory. With the able running of Bruso and Crosier, the Cats had thrown the M. S. J. squad out of stride early in the game. The hard hitting, fast moving Benhi squad was now in full swing and their next three opponents, Williamstown, Windsor, and St. joseph of Pitts- field fell defeated to the Cats, scores 31-O, 31-13, 26-6 respectively. Kip Crosier was now the big gun in the Cats' backfield and he scored 9 touchdowns in these 3 games. Paul Bruso, The Fighting French- man , was the man who was called on during these games to carry the mail when a few yards were need- ed. He scored one T.D. against Williamstown. Ryan, LaCross, Dailey and McLenithen also scored in these games, The Cats then went to Brattleboro to meet the undefeated Colonels, but they had to bow to a much faster moving Brattleboro club. Crosier scored Ben- nington's only touchdown and the Cats ended their season with a 28-7 defeat. Although the Cats started their football season poorly, they proved themselves to have the fighting spirit which is needed to win, and under the able direction of Darrell Sawyer, they proved to them- selves and everyone else that they did possess the ability to win. Those who played for the Bennington High School football team can hold their heads high, for they made their school and community proud. A my Vx! LKL. The Kits first seven games of the season were lost to some class B and C schools in Southern Vermont. Finally Coach Darrell Sawyer got his men under control and the next two games, the Kittens trounced Wfoodstock and Dalton, 6-1-20 and 58-24, respectively. The Kittens lost their next two games to fast Brattleboro and M.S.'I. teams, 53-58, 55--ii. They then journeyed to Bellows Falls and sur- prised everyone by winning over junior Varsity Ter- riers with a one point margin. Next the Kittens found a weak Wintlsor team easy pickings and cruised to a S6-31 victory. They next went into a four game slump but pulled out of it by again beating Windsor, 117-16, then Bellows Falls 33-25. This game showed a marked improvement in Benhi ball handling. The Kittens upset the whole tournament by out- pointing the boys from Arlington and the second night of play they knocked off the Taconic League champs from North Bennington with a score of 52- 40. During these two games the backboards were literally controlled by Benhi's Dick Read. Captain joe Dailey was picked for the first team of the All- Tournament team and LaCroix and Ryan were placed on the second team. So the dark horse from Benhi walked away as the Taconic Tournament champ. joe Dailey was high scorer for the year with 16-1 points and John Ryan was next with 157 points. 1 Wcvwdtq Zaadezffaif 55- 5 Coach Darrel Sawyer's Benhi Catamounts came through the '53-'54 season with a record of six wins and six losses. They turned in a 5-9 mark in the Southern Vermont League, to make sixth place in the standings. Never a threat for a playoff berth, they nevertheless managed to knock off some of the top clubs in the loop. In pre-league play the Cats won only one game out of eight, their lone victory being a 43-37 win over Drury. ' After losing the next seven games in succession, the Cats unsheathed their claws and mauled Wind- sor for a 57-43 win. A young freshman, J. P. Ryan came up from the Junior Varsity squad and scored 10 points to pace Benhi. Win number three came in their first game against Springfield when the Sawyermen exploded their scor- ing punch for 20 counters in the third period and then held on to win. For a few moments it looked like Springfield could at least tie it. With the game over and the score 54-52, the Cosmos' Dick Call had two foul shots, but missed one and the final score was 54-53. Wins over Bellows Falls, West Rutland, and Brat- tleboro in the last five games finished out the year. Five seniors will be taken by graduation from the varsity, but the top three scorers, Kip Crosier, Billy Kornitzer, and Art Gage are going to return to the squad next year. Lowell Heck has seen the last of his three years on the varsity and he leaves the Cats without a talented left-hander. Two deadly outside shooters, Bobby Rice and Digger Connell are going via the graduation route, while Frank Snow and Dick Tifft, whose board work kept Benhi in a large number of games also will take the big step in june. LQJ Crosier dunked in 271 points to easily pace the team, while Kornitzer hit for 188, Gage had 137, Heck, 113, Snow 74, Rice 66, Connell 52, and Tifft 35. Tifft hooped the highest percentage of fouls, collecting a 70 per cent shooting average. At the end of the season Crosier received the honor of being selected for the Southern Vermont second team. Next year's quintet should be able to make a good showing for Benhi, as not only will the top three scorers be returning, but all of the junior Varsity's will be in the fight for varsity berths. This group is becoming more vo vular ever' 'ear due to the vrodi rious efforts of . . 7 l . 5- , , its director, Miss Marilyn Drake, and its piano ac- companist, Burt Rockwood jr. The organization was divided into four groups: the large mixed chorus with 140 members, the small mixed chorus of about 100, the Chordettes with 12 members and the Boys' Octet. The Chordettes, well known for their splendid singing arrangments, were Elizabeth Browning, Nan- cy Corliss, Carol Savage, Judy Hall, Carolyn Coulter, Nancy Buchanan, Thayer Eldred, and Fay Douglass. tThese were the senior membersj The Boys' Octet members who will graduate are Bill Mayhew and Thomas Kenny. In the fall of the year the four groups put on a XVestern Fantasy written by our own Judy Hall and Nancy Corliss. The setting was a western dude ranch where a number ot' visiting show people com- bined their singing talents to make their vacation more enjoyable for all, During the Christmas season the Choral and Drama departments cooperated in producing XVhy The Chimes Rang, The chorus added to the beauty of this inspiring Christmas play by marching into the darkened auditorium, each member carrying a small candle. The chorus also traveled to the Sol- diers' Home and presented a concert of Christmas music for the residents. In the spring the groups gave their annual con- cert consisting of many varied and beautiful songs, The groups also participated in the Tri-State Music Festival and sent delegates to the All State Music Festival, held in Burlington. The long hours of hard work necessary to pro- duce programs of fine music resulted in much en- joyment for the community. if if ,yi xiesxcmgfs, g I Q 52 Aw Q V 1' 2 V is' ffiffik ,f .mi - f 9 a f P' f bhe. me sfaie Wa+h our new of 54 we are sure A5 ggghnal play 'of And wifh fhis our HMWYQ I was Vpresenfbd W O S -, W ..
