The aspects of academic and extra-curricular life at Benhi that may seem matter-of-course to students are in reality the result of long and careful planning. For this reason space is allotecl early in our tour of Malon s Alley to the school administrative leaders, Principal Gor- don M. Thomas, Assistant Principal Elliot S. Gil- man and Superintendent of Schools, Allan J, Heath. If the office is foreign territory to some few law-abiding souls, there is no one who has not been to the Guidance Department for advice or informa- tion at some time, ln her three years at Benhi, Guidance Director Mary A. Lanigan's time has been in constant demand. Students are constantly re- assured that there is someone to whom they can go for consultation at any time, MISS MARY A. LANIGAN, Guidance Director 099 paw .4 lIUllSlllBlES While we may run atowl of the administration occasionally during our all tes brief trio through these halls, our immediate worries usually revolve around one or several of the teachers on these pages, VVithout them, though, the alley would cer- tainly be deserted. Theirs, besides the Herculean task ot pass- ing on to us some of their philosophies, is the job ot keeping the alley in a state ot order. Pause, once in a while, and re- member that possibly at times they don't like putting up with us either. C? Wil- OACH JOHN liam's Leather Luggers. MAHONEY The Cats pried the lid off the l95O gridiron cam- paign with a 20 to I3 win over their bitter rivals, the Red Raiders from Rutland High. This was the first time since I933 that a Benhi football team was able to turn back the boys from the Marble City. The team, as well as Coach Mahoney, were mighty pleased about the whole thing, Next, the Blue and White dropped a I9 to 9 decision to Brattleboro High, the State Champs. They hit the victory trail again when they blanked Bellows Falls l8 to O. Benhi dropped their second game when M. S. J. took an I8 to I-4 decision in the annual Booster Day Game, which was a thriller all of the way. The Cats swung back into the win column when they trounced Williamstown High 35 to O. Hampered by injuries, they lost their last three games, falling victim to the mammoth Drury High Eleven, Saint Joseph's of Pittsfield 24 to 7, and Spaulcling High 33 to l3. The l95O season was highlighted with a couple of 90-yard kickoff returns by quarterback Butch Cor- bett, the line smashing plunges of Bill McGarvin, and the blocking and tackling of the little Iron Man, Pea- nut LaBarge. Ish Noble, E5enhi's best lineman, opened up those holes and punished the opposing backs through- out the season. The left half spot was very capably filled by Speedy Fred Towslee. Once he hit that open field, he was gone Butch Corbett, the Catamount's outstanding field general, was named on the All-State Second Team, be- ing beaten out by Pete Faridoni by one vote for first team honors. Ish Noble and Bill McGarvin were given honorable mention. ln the poll taken by the Spaulding High School Sentinel of high school sports editors, Butch came back to tie Faridoni for the quar- terback post. A total ot 20 men received letters which were something new in the way of monograms. They are ot old English style and are white with blue trimming. The team and coaches were also honored at a banquet sponsored by the Alumni Association, at which the boys received gold footballs donated through the generosity of Mr. J. C. Jerome. Benhi is gradually trying to organize an all Vermont team schedule. ln summary, the lack of depth handi- capped the Cats this year and with a little more reserve power they could have won a couple ot more ball games. HLLEU CHTS Benhi's basketball squad had a fine I6 and 5 record counting the Alumni and Tournament game, but they failed to bring home the coveted Vermont State Championship. lt looked as though the Cats were well on the way toward reaching their goal until Rutland beat them 38 to 25. After that, the team that had been burning up the state looked like no more than just a mediocre ball team. After being beaten by Rutland, the Cats traveled to Springfield for the game they needed to win the Southern Vermont League. However Springfield downed the Cats to tie them for first place honors. The Cats were still determined to win, but they followed the trend of past Benhi teams and fouled up in the Southern Vermont Tourament, losing to Rutland in the first game, 4l to 34. Looking like a championship team in the first quarter, the Catamounts led the Red Raiders 7 to l, but it was all Rutland from there on in. Benhi's other losses came from Drury High, 53 to 50, and Brattleboro, 47 to 46. Bob Maguire, who finished third in the Southern Vermont League with l88 points, was Benhi's high scorer. Bob also held the individual high for one game with 29, which he poured in against Bellows Falls. Butch Corbett was Benhi's contribution to the Southern Vermont All-Tourney team. The Catamounts had the high scoring average of 5l,6 points a game for 20 games, to their opponents' 42.6 points a game. This includes the Alumni Game and the two games they played in the Taconic Tourna- ment. ln the Taconic Tournament, the Kits lost their initial game to Wilmington in a close battle all the way, 55 to 53. The crown also went to Wilmington who defeated Arlington in the finals, The Jv's Dick Long and Fred Towslee were named on the second all-tourney team. These two boys not only earned these honors in the tournament, but they played outstanding ball all season. Coach Carl B, Williams stuck with Dick Long, Fred Towslee, Herm Cullinan, Dick Young and Dick Ballou as his starting lineup most of the season. Herm was noted for his board work and his ability to score and Itchy showed some outstanding ball handling. These boys will undoubtedly be permanent fixtures of next year's varsity. The experience that they gained this year will prove to be very essential in their jump to the varsity, High scoring honors went to Dick Long who tossed in 7l field goals and l5 fouls for l55 points for i6 games. The records of the previous games were lost and these points in- clude those games starting with, and after the Springfield game. Basketball practice for the Benhi girls started early in December under the direction of Coach Laure- tano. Ellen Tifft was chosen captain of the team and Joyce Landergren appointed manager. The first game was played January 16 on the home court and the Benhi girls came out victorious over Wilmington High, 28-31. Victories over Arling- ton and Wilmington followed. The first defeat came on their own court, February 6, when the girls lost a close game to Arlington, 37-42. After a loss to North Bennington, it was with some trepidation that they met the Villagers for the return game on Feb- ruary 27. However, Benhi came through with flying colors winning 23-22. Junior Varsity games were played with North Bennington and Arlington, our girls winning both North Bennington games and losing both games with Arlington. A few concerts were also presented this year and very good crowds attended them all. The Tri-State festival has been held here in Ben- nington for the past few years with states such as Massachusetts, New York and Vermont participating, The State festival is held in Burlington in the month of May. Plenty of practice is required before going to the festival because there is competition from bands all over Vermont state. Phillips, the junior and senior drama classes spent a very successful year. The audience at- tendance was good, and for some plays there was standing room only. The seniors presented The Other Side, Flit- termouse, Murder is Fun, Moonshine, The Unseen, The ldlings of the King, and The Mon- key's Paw. The juniors, later in the year, gave The Jinx from Alabama, Gratitude, Gloria Mundi, Nobody Sleeps, and Elrner. Why the Chimes Rang, a traditional Christ- mas play at Benhi, again received the tribute due it. Bette Moss played the part of the old woman, Ellen Tifft was cast as the angel and Bob Park as Uncle Bertel, The annual Regional State Play Contest was held again this year at Arlington. Bennington presented a modernistic play called Antic Spring, a story of teen-age boys and girls on a picnic. Robert, a lover of nature and poetry was played by Bill Browning, and Ginger, a person who has everything planned by Bobbie O'Neill. Sam, a dumb football player, and Gwendolyn, the current charmer, were played by Jack Evans and Clara Dyer. The two youngsters on the picnic, Elbert and Blossom, were portrayed by Denis Maynard and Marie Mattison. lt was with sincere regret that we learned of the resignation of Mrs. Phillips, Her loss will be felt not only by the drama classes but by the entire school. She has given unstintingly of her time and energy, and through her untiring efforts, the drama classes have been most successful. To her the drama class can only say, The very best of luck and good fortune in the years to come. For Monday is the deadline day for the Benhi Catamount, the high school's weekly newspaper, ap- pearing Tuesdays during the school year. While Miss Bonham's journalists hold up the literary end, business students are soliciting ads and preparing them under the direction of Miss Vera Drew, financial advisor, and Marion Oakes, '50-'Sl business manager. The Cat staff is elected by the graduating senior staff each year and results are announced at the Cat Banquet, held near the close of the school year. In May, l95O, Mary Catherine Evitt was chosen editora in-chief and Norma Dickieson associate editor When Norma left Benhi in November, to attend a Burling- ton school, she was ably replaced by Gretchen Getty. March of each year finds deserving members of the class accompanying Miss Bonham to New York to attend the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Con- ference CCSPAD held at Columbia University in New York. While there, the travelers broaden their cul- tural, as well as journalistic horizons, by attending plays and programs. The following girls were chosen for office: President, Ellen Tifft, Vice-President, Nancy Com- esky, Treasurer, Nan Chapman, Secretary, Gail Ryan, Business Manager, Clara Dyer, and Assistant Busi- ness Manager, Faye Evans. A second meeting was held a few days later and the new constitution read and approved. ln order to make a more successful and active organization, Freshman girls were admitted to membership for the first time. A point system was also introduced whereby the girl receiving the most points for holding office, participating in sports and other activities of the or- ganization, will receive an award at the end of the L year. This award will be given at a banquet which is planned for June. An Initiation Party was held in the gym to wel- come all new members. There were about one hun- dred present who enjoyed games and refreshments A volley ball competition took place in the fall and, later on, bowling teams were formed which were enjoyed immensely by all who took part. In Novem- ber, about fifteen girls, accompanied by Miss Laure- tano and Miss Connifey, hiked to the top of Mt. An- thony. Although it was a long trip, the girls all agreed they were ready for more, and that it was worth the aching muscles. By June, the Association will be able to report a most successful year, with swimming, sleigh ride, sports night, dances and tobogganing yet to come. Peggy Burkman, Bobbie' O'NeilI, Ellen Tifft, Bette Moss, and Norma Dickieson spent a week in June at Vermont Junior College in Montpelier, learning of town, county and state legislature. Norma was elected to the office of Secretary of State. They enjoyed meeting the governor, touring the capitol house and making friends with students from different regions of Vermont. Meanwhile, Boys' State delegates, Bill Browning, Denis Maynard, John Hutton, Chris Gillette, Fred Towslee and Bob Park were learning the governmental ropes at Norwich University. Chris Gillette, Ellen Tifft, Tom Siciliano, Bill Browning and Bob Park were the seniors chosen by their classmates to represent them on the Senior Cab- inet and to aid Jack Evans, Denis Maynard, Bill Brown- ing and Mary Catherine Evitt to carry out their ad- ministrative duties of guiding the class through the most important year of high school. The Cabinet had the great responsibility of see- ing that the necessary funds for the yearbook were raised. To accumulate this sum, much work had to be done. The first venture undertaken was the sponsoring of the Freshman Reception for the incoming Fresh- men, Next, the Cabinet was offered the opportunity of having the class sell 500 Booster Day tickets for the remuneration of SSO, a generous offer made by the Alumni Association. The Cabinet's next task was to lay the ground- work for the successful Curtis Magazine Campaign. Shortly thereafter, a SlOO profit was realized from a pencil sale. The Christmas Ball, cabaret style, with a floor show, basketball concessions and class dues, completed the schedule. With this, the Cabinet could safely say that the class was absolved of its financial worries. They were able to feel a sense of accomp- lishment and pride as they had carried out the trust which was placed upon them. The Student Council is composed of one repre- sentative from each home room, and the president and vice-president of the Junior and Senior classes. Miss Mary Lanigan, Guidance Director, and Gordon M. Thomas, school principal, represent the admin- istration and offer their suggestions and advice in the discussions of the Council. The duties of the Student Council are to take charge of the various student activities, and to act as a representative body of Bennington High School. Under the capable leadership of President, Denis Maynard, Vice-President, Robert Curran, Secretary, Dawn Mausert and Treasurer, Philip Hall, the Council successfully carried out its duties and proved itself worthy of the confidence which was placed in it. The outstanding contributions of this Year's Council were: The special assembly programs, the assistance rendered to the Guidance Department on Career Day and College Night, the milk machine which was put in use for the benefit of the students who carried their lunch, and the running of the Home Room Basketball League.
