President John F. Kennedy in recognition of your position as the first Catholic ever to be elected to the office of President of these United States of America. Born May 29, 1917 at Brookline, Massachusetts, you have ded- icated your life to the service of your nation. You have displayed great courage and bravery during World War II. These same admir- able qualities have been brought to light during your congressional career and as President. We greatly admire you, and feel confident that you will continue to lead our nation as you have served her in the past. . V -;A v i n - - -7 ■ -• ♦ J rv ' •v ' ' - tHll: - . H «■. Joseph Kazlas and Miss Mary Ann Werbinski were chosen Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, because of their high scholastic averages. Both students intend to pursue higher education on the college level. Girls ' and Boys ' State Seniors, Mi. David Foy, Miss Mary Ann Petrucce, Mr. Michael Mooney, and Mr. William Sabina attended Hoosier Girls ' and Boys ' State, June 10-17. on the Indiana University Campus at Bloomington. The purposes of Hoosier Girls ' and Boys ' State is to impress upon the mind a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and iiation; to develop the responsibilites of leadership; to prove the ad- vantages of leadership; and to promote the art of clean living. Hoosier Girls ' and Boys ' State are schools of government and practical politics. They have been designed to give actual experience in the problem of self-government as it operates in Indiana. Sponsored by the American Legion and its Women ' s Auxiliary, Hoosier Boys ' and Girls ' State uses an objective learning process on the thesis that good citizenship is only in part, a matter of knowledge and intellect. I Speak For Democracy Mr. Donald Scheer, Junior, placing first in the annual, ! Speak For Democracy contest, was awarded a $25 savings bond and a certi- ficate of merit. The commentary was entitled, What Does Democracy Mean to Me. C. Y. O. Delegates The Bennett delegates to the C. Y. O. National Convention, held in Buffalo, New York, November 8 tlirough 12, participated in one of thirty-two panel discussions on youths ' relationship to the five major aspects of society and life, religious, cultural, economic, political, and social. Specifically, the Bennett group discussed Youths ' Role in Politics. The purpose of the Convention was to elect the new National officers for the organization, and to formulate specific concepts in order to enrich Catholic Youths ' understanding of world affairs. The Statler-Hilton Hotel held accomodations for most of the visiting delegates and the Hotel ' s Golden Ball Room was the scene of several discussions and social activities. Guest speakers to the con- vention included Attorney General, Robert Kennedy, and Ed Sullivan.
