German Club This year was a special one for the German Club members, one they will never forget. Nineteen students from the club earned their way to Germany for eight days, through a lot of hard work, determination and a little help from their parents. To be able to participate in the trip the students had to be in one of the German classes taught by their advisor Charlene Paper. The officers for the 1978-79 year were: Ellen Sievers-President Colleen Rekemeyer-Vice President Carla Wilson-Secretary Kim Rekemeyer-Treasurer Charlene Paper-Advisor Q

Speech i A total of sixteen Bennett students participated in contest areas this year. Some were in both the Iowa High School Forensic League activities as well as Iowa State High School Speech Association events. At the All Iowa Colloquy, held November 4, 1978, on the U of I campus at Iowa City, six competed in three rounds each. Out of this group, Jeanne Hambright, with a Biblical interpretation, ranked highest for our school. She had a composite 23.1 points from a possible 30. There were thirty-five high school students, from schools all over the state, in the Biblical event. District Speech Contest was February 24, 1979, at Durant. Fourteen represented our school, out of which advanced five to the State Contest at Ottumwa, March 17. There were 1224 entries on this level. At State Contest in Ottumwa, two were awarded Division Ilisz Sarah Weih and Kim Wilson. The Division I winners were: Suzanne Weih, Beth Bauer and Keri Timmerman. This is the first year the speech association has held an All State Individual Events Festival. Bennett was honored because Keri Timmerman, one of our state winners, was chosen to perform at this event. It was held on the UNI campus, Cedar Falls, April 2, 1979. This represented the top 2 percent in the state. Keri, pictured to your left, was awarded a medal, after the expository address, Safety Tips was presented.
