Log of the I. .I Bennett SEPTEMBER 19.30 JUNE 1954 I NEW HORIZONS It was September of the year 1950 Weather Stormy Attacked by unfrlendly people Yes we had started our four year Journey 1n new waters The crew was hand plcked from the ports of 66 63 64 81 47 22 21 and 74 fWe regret those we have mlssedl Wlnd Favorable DlF6Ct1OH Ever Upward The crew s representatlve for the first year on the seas was Lynn Rock David Hayman with an average of 999 held top pos1t1on in the crows nest In preparatlon for encounter w1th the p1rate sh1p Kensmgton the captam had an assembly of the Shlp s crew October 31 1950 Th1s assembly lasted much to our amusement for many an hour Our confidence was well placed when our team brought home the head of the severed Knlght However due to an 1nel1g1b1l1ty we had to forfelt the SpOllS of vlctory The ship s clown Ronald Joseph performed ad mlrably w1th the capable asslstance of Davld Axle rod durmg the neophytes assembly a few weeks later Shlpboard we had all sorts of athletes Captam Mary Hendrlcks and her volleyball team led the freshman g1rls to vlctory over the seniors X Y BEN Qulte a crew from the home ports of 63 and 22 aptly defeated the hlgh and mighty four year men 1n the mtra mural league at basketball To keep us amused two of our r1s1ng stars Jeff and h1s Mutt fRoz Benatov1ch and Mar1lyn Cohenl performed superbly 1n Jacks and Jllls the first of yearly shlpboard product1ons Outstandmg sxghts 1n ports where we refueled were the Colgate Thlrteen and the Chrlstmas As sembly Gloomy weather loomed ahead as one of our sh1pmates passed away W1th the passlng of our former prmclpal Charles Elbert Rhodes and be loved classmate Marlene M1chaels a sad note was struck 1n the makxng of our hlstory As the first year of the tr1p lay 1n back of us we had accomphshed much and we were well started toward a fru1tful and eventful voyage P Honlg First Mate Ill II ANCHORS AWEIGH' Year 1951 52 Weather Calm Dlsposltlon Good The second year of the four year Journey proved to be more pleasant than the first Our transportatlon 1n ports at Wh1Ch we stopped was greatly supplemented by the mtroductlon of transportatlon cards 1n place of the old transport 3tlOH books ws' The second year we elected Erwm Cutler as crews representatlve and Peter Hubbell was elected Boy s Representatwe at Large Agam at the top of the ladder was David Hayman w1th a phenomenal average and several of our shlps mterpreters won l1ngu1st1c awards The Sh1pS reporters were Davld Axlerod and Entertainment for the year was a speaker from the F B I iFederal Boat Investlgatorsl H Catherme Smlth accompanled by her seemg eye dog talked on her tr1p to Europe Dur1ng that year some of our Petty Officers had an argument over Conscrlptlon of All Amerlcans 1n Tlme of War Our chlef exponent of that was Jack Werblow In New Orleans we stopped over for the Mafdl Gras Partlclpatlng were many of our own sh1p mates The show itself was cllmaxed by a dance ln Wh1Ch the Kmg and Queen of the Mardl Gras were chosen To enable others of the crew to have a meetmg on the foredeck the two year veterans had thelr own entertamment ln the boller room lSophomore Assembly P Thls performance done solely by members of our class proved us to be very Orlglnal As the second year closed we had already be gun to make a name for ourselves Our history was bemg recorded on to the annals of the L J Bennett Antlclpatmg an even greater future we look w1th regret to the years that have past M Holt Second Mate 0 0 .. 7 7 V 7 Y V 9 ' ' ' ' 1 ' ' V. . . . , . . 0 4 o . . .
