The three day event, Oct. 17-19, A Socio-Cultural History of the Black Woman in Amer- ica: Three Perspectives: Traditional, Feminist and Ethnographic, featured noted scholars. Coordinated by the Bennett Scholars and the Divisions of Education, Human- ities and Social Sciences. The featured keynoters were Margaret Walker Alex- ander, poet, novelist and educator; Pau- la Giddings, editor-at-large and book re- view editor, Essence Magazine; and ac- tivist, author and educator. Classrooms became the sites for live- ly scholarly presentations and discus- sions on issues of unique concern to black women. Presenters represented universities and colleges from across the country. 20 21 24 A Socio Cultural History of the Black Woman in America: Three Perspectives 26 f3 $■The college celebrated its 112th anniversary. So many things stand out. However, most important of all are the relation- ships that I ' ve enjoyed that I be- lieve will last as future goals are won and lost, achieved and changed. Yes, I now feel able to meet the challenges of life. Ben- nett College helped in that prep- aration. Natalie A. As a member of the Bennett Scholars Program, one of the sponsoring organizations, it is wonderful to know that I made a small contribution to such an aus- picious occasion. Senior Day is memorable for the robing ceremo- ny itself; but especially for the singing of the class song by the entire class of ' 85. The song was a beautiful representation of our feelings and experiences; while the audience response was in- credible and heartwarming. I was, and still am, deter- mined to be a very successful, im- portant person in my life time. Yes, I feel that I have had a quality ex- perience at Bennett because it helped me to become more edu- cated, professional and knowl- edgeable about, not only my ma- jor, but all aspects of life in general. ISP: Communications Media Public Relations Career Goal: Public Relations Manager Charlotte Elisa Green Darlington, South Carolina Accounting A Senior ' s Perspective Everything that has happened to me at Bennett has been a mean- ingful experience because I ' ve grown so much due to all of the different environments and var- ious activities that I have been in- volved in. I once thought, upon ar- riving at Bennett, that I ' d be better challenged and prepared at a larg- er and inter-racial school, but dur- ing the spring semester of my sophomore year, I realized that I ' d made a wise choice to stay at Ben- nett. The instructions and facilities that I have received and used, re- spectively, here at Bennett Col- lege may not be what some con- sider to be the best, but for me they are better than the best; the memories of it all, good or bad, are now mine to treasure for a life time. The level of my motivation and determina- tion have been enhanced. In fact, I have acquired a more challenging nature, something I already had in- side me but was not able to use effectively. Also, at Bennett I was inspired to have an involvement in Politics, Community Awareness and Bennett activities. Further- more, the contacts that I acquired through the Aces Programs and the Career Services Center will help me enhance my career objec- tives.
