J no a; Mtf s U 6 After signing in at the Welcome Center, new students and parents received as- sistance from upper-class students. Off and Running Josefa Bethea came with the right stuff, but her parents helped her get off to a good start with some whole- some encouragement. Mom is also a Belle. Peer advisor Sharron Henry takes a break from Orientation activities to LaLeza Harris. Pam Bolden. Tangela Withers and Celeste Webster get ac- quainted after Orientation Worship Service. Audience anxiously awaits the start ot Freshman Revue. Monique Purcell moved the audience with her gospel rendition. Moving the program along were Valerie Reid, junior class Revue coordinator; emcee Stephanie Streeter. a freshman; and junior Florentia Spires, the assis- tant coordinator. Robin Stockham gracefully modeled recreational wear. Yeshiva Colbert showed us a little new wave fashion. Freshman models are enthused about their first stepping out into the Ben- nett Experience. I A Queen Crowned Miss Nedra K. McGee. the right stuff in our books, re- presented us well. Shown with her court, Nedra was surround- ed by charm and loveliness: Rose Wilson, Miss Senior; Alaina McCloud, Miss Junior; First Attendant Cheryl Wil- liams; Deidre Evans, Miss Sophomore; and Yeshive Col- bert, Miss Freshman. Together they represented the best at Bennett College. Yes, the right stuff — refined, well- rounded, beautiful, intelligent, kind, spirited, and independent thinkers. Miss Sophomore, Deidre Evans, was all smiles and glamorous as she was presented during the coronation activities. Founders ' Day ' 83 Dr. Julius Scott keynoted the annual Founder ' s Day Convocation in Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel. He is associate general secretary. Division of Higher Education. Board of Higher Education and Ministry. One parent presented The Cre- ation during the UNCF benefit. Mrs. Thelma Walker made the famous Johnson poem come alive. Mrs. Cathy Mussington, the coach, proved to us that athletics and the arts made for a winning combination. A college talent show is incomplete without President Miller ' s I ' ll Be Loving You Always. It has become a UNCF tradition. Mrs. Mary Jane Crawford, member of the music faculty, took us into another dimension of music, opera. She per- formed Voi lo sapeta — Mascagni. 13 Parents Were the Guests. . Models Phyllis V. Johnson, director of admissions, and Ralph Fennell. as- sistant business manager, showed us formal wear. Carolyn Mark ' s dancers have be- come another UNCF tradition. Highlights include the Talent Show, the Parents-Fac- ulty Mini-Conferences, a ban- quet and a worship service. The Living Madonnas The theme for this Christmas production was Images of Great Black World Madonnas. Vicelia Howard was the model in the scene, Ancient Goddess of Diopetes, a Greek work. j| - T 3 V Jeanette Goodwin modeled in the scene Madonna and Child, which has a Swiss background. Marcia Strong was featured in the Spanish version of Ma- donna and Child. this is con- sidered to be the second oldest known painting of the Madonna. 18 n Kimberly McK night made a beautiful model in the Madon- na of Czestochowa, a Polish work dating back to 710 A.D. The child was played by Shay Stevens. ■ 20 J Each Christmas season finds faculty, staff and students involved in a variety projects. The faculty and staff were the guests of Presi- dent and Mrs. Miller at the Presi- dent ' s Christmas Cheer, where gifts were collected for a needy family. Before given the privilege of donning black robes and caps for a final coed stroll across the quadrangle, we faced the dawn of that Thursday on which we re- ceived the passport to graduation. Like hundreds of Belles who walked these flagstone ways, we had joined the chosen few. Each of us arrived at this moment in one way or the other, some with only breathing room, but having made it just the same. Among the happy group were those who exuded the right stuff until the end. Yolanda Durante led her class for four years and graduat- ed with high honors; Debra Lovett was commissioned into the U.S. Army; and Mary Cook became the first Belle to complete the dual-de- gree program in mathematics and engineering. There were those who made their mark as student leaders, as commu- nity volunteers, as active members of organizations, and most impor- tantly, as scholars in the classroom. They had what it took, the right stuff. Dr. Marilyn Whaley Winters, an achiever and a humanitarian, chal- lenged us to become shalom wom- en. Taken from the Hebrew tradi- tion, shalom means peace, unity, partnership, well-being, health and community. It means wholeness and justice. Recalling her experiences at Ben- nett as an undergraduate, Dr. Wha- ley encouraged the graduates to se- cure their interior lives, to be in soli- darity with humankind. She said, Your interior life must be kept in balance with every re- source you use to refresh your life, whether it be prayer or meditation. Whatever it is that lifts your spirit and at the same time quietens you, take time to work on that and to sustain your inner self. She noted that while the gradu- ates were especially beautiful today and feeling the right to think they have it all, they had a responsibility to help others have the opportunity to have it all. Calling herself a professional vol- unteer, Dr. Whaley is vice president of the Women ' s Division of the Gen- eral Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. She has traveled extensively in Southeast Asia, the Caribbeans and Africa. She is an experienced human right- ist and much committed to becoming a shalom woman. It has been said that if you hurt when others hurt, then you are danc- ing to the rhythm of God, she said. Commenting on this country ' s treatment of nonwhite illegal immi- grants, such as the Haitians, she said, I submit to you that there are not any persons who have white skin who come to our country from Can- ada, Switzerland, Germany or Po- land who are in this country illegally. But because their skin is white, they are not stoppped and asked to produce their green cards. I think you and I should be outraged and become more in solidarity with our friends who are coming to our coun- try as political exiles. Graduating with honors were Me- lanie C. Alford and Joan Y. Davis. They, too, had the right stuff. After the last degree was award- 158 ed, the President ' s Charge given and the induction into the National Alum- nae Association, we had reached a new chapter. The end of one experi- ence becomes the start of another. We parted from familiar settings to face the challenge of finding jobs or admission into graduate or profes- sional school. A new test awaits us. i. 160 T
