T 11 Bennett College Greensboro, North Carolina The Belle STAFF Editor-in-Chief, Tonni Sullivan Managing Editor, Elisa Staley Organizations Editor, Tonya Martin Advisor, Miss Myra Davis I Success is not easily reached. It ' s like climbing a mountain — To reach the top, the right trails must be taken. Many obstacles must be overcome. Whether you veiwed this Bennett experience by your ability to control what has happened to you here or you have simply ex- isted without giving of your skills and talents, success ul- timately develops from your response to the environment around you. The bid for success is never easy nor is it definite. One continues to reach for it. Success is only apparent when someone says you did it — when you can finally claim 1 did, I am, 1 can. and I will . . . Although it is generally viewed as activities to introduce new students to the college, it is really more than that . . . meeting new people . . . adjusting to new living arrangements . . . un- derstanding new regulations . . . adjusting to new freedoms . . . tak- ing more of a responsibility for daily tasks . . . overcoming homesickness . . . packing too many clothes into too little space . . . it ' s enough to cause one to wonder if it ' s worthwhile. But it didn ' t take us long to get caught up in the tasks of registra- tion, organizing schedules, and meeting new people. And for some, it was easier. But we sur- vived. Receptions, cookouts, classes, dances, A T., Seminars 10 1 1 14 16 The Joys of Labor Day t 18 Coronation ' 80 20 1 Excerpts from Address Delivered by Mrs. Therressa Hoover. Board of Global Ministries. United Methodist Church: Bennett College in the USA, and several sister schools overseas — especially in Asia — are direct and intentional outgrowths of dis- coveries women were making about themselves and their abilities: the twin development of women ' s organizations in the churches and the creation and support of women ' s colleges around the world. These two streams are still very important in the 1980 ' s. Each needs the other. Support for one another becomes a matter of strategic survival . . . My answer is that the general -Founders ' Day- society and church have yet to sufficiently value women ' s con- tributions. Until that happens, these two streams must hold on to one another, provide necessary support so that society will be enriched by women ' s gifts and skills . .. It is necessary to recognize that an organizational base is an es- sential tool in any movement toward full equality. The historic founding of women ' s colleges by women ' s organizations, dating from a period of history when women were not even thought capable of learning, is a prime ex- ample of the above statement. Such schools, as one might ex- pe ct, have gone through several transitions. Their students in- creasingly come from the elite of society: elite not so much social and economic as elite in terms of dream and hope . . . Women ' s colleges during the last decade, have made new efforts which herald the dawn of a new era. TTiey are designing programs with women of the community and changing the expectations of students. Overseas sisters are un- iting in their effort to understand the needs of all women . . . Women students are required to make these contacts and to do services in the community. It is a coming together in those settings of women of the elite — both educational and economic — and the women of the masses who of- ten come from communities that ' 22 are poor and removed by light years from the setting of college campuses . . . Feminist scholarship of the decade has been concerned about two central political questions: the search for the origins of women ' s oppression and the for- mulation of effective strategies for combatting patriarchy. In the late 1920 ' s, the new women were attempting to assimilate into male dominated institutions. At the same time, women ' s political activity epitomized the process of re- jecting women ' s culture in favor of men ' s promise of equality. The gradual decline of female separatism in social and political life, precluded the emergence of a strong women ' s political block which might have protected and expanded the gains made by earlier women ' s movement . . . Women ' s club movement ... il- lustrates the politicization of women ' s institutions. Their ac- tivities served to politicize traditional women by forcing them to define themselves as citizens, not simply as wives and mothers! Women ' s colleges, opened in these same decades, further attest to the importance of separate female institutions during this period of transition . . . from the personal sphere to a public sphere. Originally conceived as training grounds of piety, purity and domesticity, these colleges laid the groundwork for the new collegiate institutions of the postwar era . . . Power is the source of change to- day . . . Women need power to ad- vance their own development, but they do not need the power to limit the development of others. To move out of the position where they have been dominated, women need a power base from which to make even the first step ... to resist attempts to control and limit them. Women of the churches, black women with for- mal training and any likeminded group need new understanding of moving the organizational bases we have to identify changes needed and concentrated on power to effect them . . . Black women in the eighties must remember their history and honor the sources of power which are theirs. They must provide active role models for teen women who face a society with multi-complex social and economic problems ... Black College Day ' 80 . . . Students from black colleges across the nation gathered in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 29 to voice support for their schools. Black College Day called atten- tion to the needs of institutions which have provided black leader- ship for hundreds of years. While we weren ' t sure how we would make the pilgrimage, the SGA made arrangements for a bus load to support the Day. But then there was the problem of deciding who should go. Well — the decision was finally announced to the despair of some. Thanks to contributions from the community and backing from the college administrators, we joined thousands who gathered for speeches, competition of college queens, and wholesome fellowship. Tony Brown was cer- tainly the highlight of the day and caused us to think more carefully about this experience we often take for granted. It was a challenge. As Dr. Miller said, The Bennett woman must make the difference for the future of our race. Discr ' Down to the Business of Learning While we didn ' t always sit around with our right elbows crooked on our knees and with our chins cup- ped in our hands like The Thinker. we did do our share of note taking, paper writing, lab projects, and reading. And we can honestly admit, some of us didn ' t do enough! There was always something to think about, something to write about, and certainly, something to read about. Ours were days of meeting departmental require- ments . . . books, tests, page after page of notes, films, tapes, guest speakers, boring lectures and ex- citing seminars. It took approximately one hour for us to memorize parts of the guinea pig, names of battles fought in the Civil War, the amendments of the Constitution, to realize that we could not make those verbs and subjects agree . . . And when we could take no more. we succumbed to a nap, gossiped about the jam the night before, or looked at the tube. 26 Bl • ■' — 0 i 30 — 1 ; ■■■«. ■r- i ' F ' v   F .:;- . --T:r, - ■■g .. i m viw- 32 s- Jt. k 33 35 -A 36 i: ' . ■■■I ' H- UVFU, T Students Help Admissions Staff As the Office of Admissions worked to acquaint potential stu- dents to the Bennett Experience, some of us were invited to par- ticipate. Said Dr. Miller, The ceremony of robing is a very serious and solemn one, for it symbolizes that you have taken on a new mantle of maturity and responsibility ... He succinctly concluded for each of us, As the poet says, ' I am a part of all that I have met ' so it is here in this place, we are a part of each other, some thing of you rubs off on the person sitting next to you, some thing of you rubs off on me and others of the faculty and conver- sely you are what you have become through your encounters with us. 84 f 85 k i 1 ' rt «f R . Folger Shakespeare Library 149 G tf S ' 150 151 Commencement ' 81 154 v t«dr««i., 156 Honoring the Class of 1931 Small in number, but high in spirit, the Class of ' 81 marched for once to the tune of the same drummer. Although, a few would not receive their degrees until the end of the summer, the excite- ment of commencement dominated the afternoon. Dr. Elizabeth D. Koontz, the assistant superintendent of the North Carolina Department of In- struction, spoke of dark political clouds which threaten to halt the progress of blacks. She challenged the graduates to pick up where the programs initiated in the 1960 ' s by the federal government leave off; to devote their leeimed skills to filling in the impending gaps. We ' ve managed to survive and to overcome, she said. We have managed to do so because of some people who are no longer here and we dare not give up now. Dr. Koontz told the graduates that there degrees are less a license of proven skills than a mandate to continue learning. Remember graduates, the opera is not over until the fat lady sings and she has not sung yet for Bennett College or any other black college in North Carolina. During the exercise, the college paid tribute to the Class of ' 31: Zenobia B. Headen, Lillian W. Snipes, Madeline M. Turner, Nelle A. Coley, Chattie Boston, Madeline Best, Mattie Goode, and Elsie A. Woodard. Graduating with honors were Linda F. Anderson, Lisa A. Johnson, Sharonlyn Jones and Katherine Winston. 157 A Tribute To Black Children Know you what it is to be a child. It is to believe in love, To believe in loveliness, To believe in belief. — Francis Thompson t ' . ' ise Our Dedication Mrs. Willie Mae McCallum ' 37 If she greets you with a smile She ' s the Bennett Ideal; Always doing things worthwhile. That ' s the Bennett Ideal. If she places her cares on the shelf. Thinks of others far more than herself. If from the start She has love in her heart. Then, she ' s the Bennett Ideal ... The death of Mrs. Willie Mae McCallum was feh by all who were touched by her influence. She was a friend, academic advisor, alumna, instructor, and loyal supporter. If there is such a unique thing as the Bennett Ideal, she was it Pfeiffer Hall was her favorite place. 4 wj ' L
