For Reference Not to be taken from this room THE BELLE 1977 Bennett College Greensboro, North Carolina President, Isaac H. Miller, Jr. Editor, Gaynell Hendricks Advisor, Miss Myra Davis Staff: Barbara Smothers, Thorna Humphries, Joyce Bass. Jerrylyn Davis, Faye Howard, Gena Haskett, Pam Griffin and Julia Williams Chief Photographer, M. Davis c - fA Looking with opened eyes and hearing with sharp ears Up the stairs, down the hall we go, Making new discoveries. Trying the untried. Come closer and perhaps we ' ll together find how it was. The whats, hows and whos are we about? We ' ll ask her, or him or you. Where have we come from? Why did we that? A new sensation? New attitudes? A new start? Let ' s look again. I don ' t remember that. Was this the way it was? Come closer and perhaps we ' ll together find how it was. There, we discover an unexplained happening. Examine it. But look quickly. It ' s only a memory. So much, so little of what it was. For her who had dreams, it was beautiful and good. For her who had no dream, it was pale and unmoving. Come closer and perhaps, we ' ll together find how it was. ' , ' 2?, r ' r? V. M Words or reality? The love, the caring, the sharing we experienced in our own way. With some imagination, spirit and work, the task was completed. We assembled our lives — with purpose and for some, without. Come closer and perhaps we ' ll together find how it was. C 4 I I } Ife The sounds of learning, despair, growing and becom- ng break the silence of early morn. We, a community of different beings, but as one in- volved in this Bennett dream — for some realized, for others deferred. You and I have shared In the rebirth of a great tradi- tion. sassSMSK FE4TURE5 1. The school year began with long lines of parents paying fees. 2. College personnel and families joined for an evening of games and good food behind the gym. 3. Dr. Perry Mack greets new student and parent. 4. It meant for parents hard work and sorrow. 5. Freshmen talent? 10 First Days . . . 11 Labor Day Fun The Labor Day Outing provided a day of recrea- tion and good food. We fought the smoke, the sun and bees to enjoy each other ' s company. It was a day of volleyball, softball, roller skating, card games, men, and hamburgers. It was watching the staff suffer over smoking grills before impatient students. It was defeating the faculty and staff In the annual Labor Day Volleyball Game. i 12 13 14 Founders ' Weekend Activity Varies Bennett observed its 103rd anniversary, Oct. 7-10. Keynoting the celebration were alumna Rose Withers Catchlngs and former statesman Robert C. Weaver. Mrs. Catchlngs, also a college trustee, is Executive Secretary, Ministry of Women ' s Office, World Division of the Board of Global Ministries, the United Methodist Church. She keynoted an assembly. Having traveled extensively throughout the world, she stated that Bennett women are very much involved in the liberation struggle on the international scene. She Is in- volved in finding channels to open up avenues of com- munication with foreign governments on problems of politically involved women. After a luncheon for international students, sponsored by Mrs. Isaac H. Miller, International Women ' s Day was highlighted by an exhibit and International Student Forum. On Friday night, the Music Department presented Hatt, based on the life of Harriett Tubman. Guest speaker for the Founders ' Convocation was Dr. Robert C. Weaver, one time head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He challenged black institutions to overcome thinking of its challenges and problems purely in racial terms. Dr. Miller was also honored for his 10 years. 15 ■■ Clothing Majors Present New York Sights and Sounds Clothing students presen- ted their annual Spring Fashion Show. It was planned by the senior ma- jors and based on their stimulating fall visit to New York City ' s fashion district. They featured original millinery designs. Other partici- pants were Swanda and Pat (at right). 16 Ste The Office of Buildings and Grounds held an In-House Workshop with the theme: Safety and Health Awareness. Guest Dance Group The Hampton Institute Dance Co., the Terpsichoreans, presented The Essence of Movement. Under the direction of Bennett alumna Jean Braxton, the group performed from spirituals such as Amazing Grace. Two young men highlighted the event. 18 mwnm Some Things Take On Personal Air One of the general complaints of stu- dents in the Freshman Studies Program was the unending stream of forms and questionnaires to be completed. But each instructor in her own way met the challenge. Mrs. Isaac H. Miller made it all worthwhile with a picnic during the last class period for some very special freshmen. Sharon Harrell was the day ' s birthday girl. ifikV 19 Choir Tour 77 20 Fresh and cheerful, the college choir departed from the campus, March 4. FIRST STOP. Richmond, Va. The tour was off to a good start, performing before a standing-room only audience. SECOND STOP. Long Island, N.Y. Basking in their first success the group arrived for three days of singing. THIRD STOP. Leaving the beautiful reception of Long Island, somewhat weary the choir moved on to Philadelphia. From Tuesday through Thursday, the troopers sang on, but the smiles were shorter, the curls drooping and the seats harder. FOURTH STOP. A night of relaxation at the Holiday Inn in Cambridge, Ohio served as a tonic. FIFTH STOP. Dragging, but dedicated to the cause, donning smiles, the troopers made their final ap- pearances in Cincinnati. r  !  .r-S Freshmen Gather at Social . . . 23 Stokely Interacts With Students 1.
