FOREWORD The theme of the 1968 BENNETT BELLE is The Power That Makes Men Free. As Dr. Miller stated in his address, the influence of the liberal education is measured by what the individual takes away, and the impact which he or she is thus prepared to make upon the society. Because we have been subjected to the kind of education which reflects a creative idealism, the impact which we propose to make on society will be purposeful. The Power That .Makes .Men Free is creativity, a creativity that does not destroy tradition, nor allow that tradition to enslave us. Ours is a creativity that employs tradition as one of the steps to new ideologies, new philosophies, and new protests. We are called upon to react and interact with an everchanging environment: new. exciting, disturbing, seldom soothing, seldom traditional: winnowing and sifting, selecting and reject- ing. Constructing protest is essential for growth. The interchange bewteen mind and mind is the life blood of the academic community. We grow as we keep alive the traditional right of the individual to dissent and to question. But let us not be carried away with the philosophy of dissent as an end in itself. Our spirits must be free to shed uncreative tradition. Let us not fear conflict and protest: but when it comes, let it be creative. Let us create collectively, faculty, and students, a tradition of orderly and disciplined change. Through discipline of self let us create a new society. Let this be our mission: that these times shall be times in which there is a new realization of self, a greater sense of commitment to the proposition that the health of the Society depends on the creative involvement of the individual. It doth not yet appear what we shall be. but we know that we shall be free in so far as we do not allow ourselves to be enslaved by uncreative tradition: as we engage in constructive protest and dissent: as we pursue a tradition of orderly and disciplined change: as we develop the individual human spirit within the unity of an inclusive society. .I W .V..- J
