THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON April 15 , 1988 To the 1988 Graduates of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law: It is a pleasure to join your families, friends, and professors in extending congratulations to you on your graduation from law school. One of our greatest Founding Fathers, James Madison, once wrote, . . . a people who mean to be their own Governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. Thomas Jefferson referred to much the same idea when he swore his eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. On this occasion I urge you to use the knowledge you have gained through higher education to strengthen not only our own free society, but to promote the spread of freedom and justice for all. Our century has taught us lessons, all too many of them bitter ones, about wisdom as the key to liberty. To keep our heritage alive, our first labor must be to understand it.
