After graduation from University of Michigan Law School, Professor Appel became an in- structor at Columbia University Law School 11956-581, and then entered private practice in New York City 11958-611. ln 1961 he joined the CBS Law Department and was deputy general counsel of CBS, Inc., 1968-80. From 1980 to 1983, he was vice president and general coun- sel of Western Union Corporation. He teaches contracts, trusts and estates, restitution, anti- trust law, and intellectual property. 96X FACULTY J. David Bleich Herbert and Florence Tenzer Professor of Jewish Law and Ethics. Dr. Bleich has taught at Hunter College, Rutgers University, and Bar-Ilan University, and is pro- fessor of Talmud at Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, an affiliate of Yeshiva Universi- ty. He has written extensively on Jewish law and ethics, among his published works are: Jewish Bioethics, With Perfect Faithg Foundations of Jewish Belief, Contemporary Halakhic Prob- lems ftwo volumeslg and Judaism and Healing. He is editor of the Halakhah department of Tradi- tion. He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a postdoctoral fellow at the Hastings Center, and is a fellow of the Academy of Jewish Philosophy and a member of the Governor's Commission on Life and the Law. William W. Bratton, Jr. Professor of Law. B.A., 1973, J.D., 1976, Co- lumbia University. Professor Bratton graduated magna cum laude from college. While in law school, he was both Kent and Stone Scholar, and served as articles editor of the Columbia Law Review. He was law clerk to Judge William H. Timbers, Unit- ed States Court of Appeals for the Second Cir- cuit, 1976-77, and was associated with the firm of Debevoise, Plimpton, Lyons 8: Gates from 1977 to 1980. He teaches contracts, corpora- tions, and corporate finance, and has written articles dealing with the relations of corpora- tions and senior security holders.

Lester Brickman cs Professor of Law. B.S., 1961, Carnegie-Mellon University, JD., 1964, University of Florida, LL.M., 1965, Yale University. Professor Brickman has taught courses in contracts, professional responsibility, land use, federal jurisdiction, and family law since entering into teaching in 1965. He is a specialist in lawyers' ethics and legal services delivery systems, and has written and lectured on the standard of care of the legal professional, lawyers' fees, lawyers' advertising, specialization, use of paraprofessionals, group and pre- paid legal services, unauthorized practice, and systems approaches to law practice. He is also a leading expert in the field of clinical legal education. He has consulted for the U.S. Office of Education, Ford Foundation, National Science Foundation, Council on Legal Educa- tion for Professional Responsibility, American Bar Association, Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, and Legal Services Corpo- ration. He served as Cardozo's acting dean from 1980 to 1982. '- David G. Carlson Associate Professor of Law. B.A., 1974, University of Cal- ifornia at Santa Barbara, j.D., 1977, Hastings College of Law, University of California. Professor Carlson was editor-in-chief of the Hastings Law Journal. Prior to joining the Cardozo faculty, Profes- sor Carlson was an associate with the firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore, New York City. He teaches in the areas of bankruptcy, commercial law, law and economics, and property. Edwin S. Cohen Visiting Professor of Law. B.A., 1933, University of Richmond, J.D., 1936, University of Virginia. Professor Cohen practiced law in New York City for many years as a partner in the firm of Root, Barrett, Cohen, Knapp 8: Smith, now known as Barrett, Smith, Schapiro, Simon 8: Armstrong. In 1965 he returned to teach at the University of Virginia Law School, where he became Joseph M. Hartfield Professor of Law. From 1969 to 1973 he served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy and later as Under Secretary of the Treasury. He then returned to teach at the University of Virginia and also became a partner in the law firm of Covington 8: Burling in Washington, D.C. He is now senior counsel to that firm and professor of law emeritus at the University of Virginia. FACULTYX97
