Its faculty is increasingly recognized for scholarship and creative involvement in the educational process, its administration has generated constructive innovation and a sense of community, and you, its students, have lent your intellect, integrity and commitment to the environment that is Cardozo. As our alumni approach 3000 in number, their increasing impact upon society, in the private and public sectors, is evident. And the continuing dedication of the Cardozo Board of Directors, other visionary supporters, and Yeshiva University augurs well for our future. Justice Cardozo challenged us to make the final cause of law the welfare of society. Cardozo Third-Year Student New York, New York December 1, 1988 Hiring Partner Important Law Firm New York, NY To whom it may concern, I very much enjoyed meeting with you some weeks ago. You made a very favorable impression on me, and I was impressed with you as a person as well as your firm's credentials. As I am sure you can appreciate, I have interviewed with an extraordinary number of highly qualified firms. The task of choosing from among them is a difficult one, but as I am limited in the number of offers I can accept, I decline offers from many qualified candidates. Unfortunately, I do not believe it would be mutually beneficial to pursue further discussions with you at this time. I appreciate your interest in me and the time you took to meet with me. Good luck in your careers - I wish you much success in finding someone to your liking, and I am certain you will all excel in your future endeavors. If it later appears that I will be able to consider a position with your firm, I will be in touch with you. Later, Ben Cardozo LAST REJECT ION LETTER 139 N1 .4 YQ x, . Cardozo School of Law: It is a pleasure to join your families, friends, and professors in extending congratulations to you on your graduation from law school. One of our greatest Founding Fathers, James Madison, once wrote, . . . a people who mean to be their own Governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. Thomas Jefferson referred to much the same idea when he swore his eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. On this occasion I urge you to use the knowledge you have gained through higher education to strengthen not only our own free society, but to promote the spread of freedom and justice for all. Our century has taught us lessons, all too many of them bitter ones, about wisdom as the key to liberty. To keep our heritage alive, our first labor must be to understand it. Once again, congratulations. Nancy and I send you our best wishes for every happiness. God bless you, and God bless America. lrvx-Nldx LETTER FROM PRESIDENT! 143 -- ' 5 FT? :. , --.w. fy . .. This is a special event in your lives, and -- as you are the 10th graduating class -- it is a special event in the life of the Cardozo School of Law too. The name of Benjamin N. As new lawyers, you will soon be seeing our rights as American Citizens not as the theory of the classroom but as the reality of the courtroom.
