THE STAFF Establishing a CSL yearbook seemed, to those of us who began this project in the fall of 1982, to be something worthwhile and perhaps even a lot of fun to put together. As the school year progressed, bit-by-bit the book took shape. At times the work went smoothly. More often, forced to compete with the study time required to meet course obligations, progress was slow and difficult, sometimes coming to a complete halt for weeks at a time. There are parts of the book that we had hoped might be somewhat better. This is not for any lack of willingness to do the work required, it is only that time permits just so much. All-in-all we rather like the way it turned out, and we sincerely hope that you will too. It is with great pride that we present this book, RES NOVA, to the finest lawyers to come out of CSL to date-The Graduating Class of 1983. We would like to acknowledge the cooperation of Yeshiva University, the administration of the Bejamin N. Cardozo School of Law, The Forum, Larry Margolin, and the many students who rooted us on in our first effort to bring a yearbook to Cardozo. ' We especially appreciate the generousity and enthusiasm displayed by the many families and friends of the class of 1983 who responded to our appeal earlier this year. They, more than anyone are responsible for the successful completion of RES NOVA. Drawings and shorts credited From 29 Reasons have been selected from 29 Reasons not to go to Law School by Warner 8 lhara, Published by Nolo Press, California. We greatfully acknowledge their permission to utilize their unique perspective of what lawyering is all about. - At this point-in-time having a class yearbook may not seem of monumental importance. But many years from now, when you leaf through this book, we hope that you are inundated with pleasant memories. More importantly we hope that you will be the kind' of attorney of which the Cardozo Community and yourself can both be proud. GOOD LUCK. MIKE CANNON - Jostens Rep Emo sukArMAN oAvlo J. Cardozo School of Law is a milestone, both in your own lives and in the life of the Institution. Personally it means that after three years of the study of law in an intellectually challenging and stimulating environment you are now prepared to practice a profession that will, we hope, be fulfilling to you and of great benefit to society. For Yeshiva University, your graduation is equally important, for it marks the fifth commencement in the history of our Law School and a giant step closer to the goals we set in our commitment to excellence. Although the Cardozo School of Law was chartered in 1974, less than a decade ago, the institution has earned a reputation far exceeding that of many long established law schools. Uur success depends in large measure on the accomplishments of students such as you. Indeed, you have brought honor to the memory of the eminent jurist for whom our School is named. May you continue to bring honor to us in your achievements. As each of you is awarded your J.D. Degree and leaves 55 Fifth Avenue as a student, we trust that along with your legal knowledge you will carry the challenge of the inscription in the School's lobby: uThe Final Cause of.Law is the Welfare of Society.n May you go from strength to strength, fortifying your own lives and careers and becoming a blessing to the entire community. , Yeshiva University, its Trustees, administration, and faculty happily welcome you to its distinguished alumni. CARDOZO SCHOOL OF LAW YESHIVA UNIVERSITY 55 FIFTH AVENUE, NEW YORK, NY 10003 OFFICE or THE DEAN PHONE. 12121790-0310 February 15, 1983 Dear Students: I am pleased to include my comments in this year's Res Nova. For me, it has been an exciting first year as Dean, learning about the talents and aspirations of our law students, helping, I hope, in the process of making Cardozo a great institution. It has been a year during which the loyalty of the faculty and the welcoming spirit of the students has aided me in the difficult pro- cess of learning how the various parts of the law school can be brought toward a stronger whole. Cardozo is realizing its potential as a place that vaunts a commitment to legal theory together with a concern for professional development. In its young life, the law school has already made impressive marks, gathered an enormously talented faculty and attracted law students with much to offer the profession. My congratulations to the students for this, the first Yearbook for the law school. It is yet another milestone in the institution's maturation. H GIG BIOS E. I told him that I am a law student. ln broken English he said l'Ah, so you're learning to be a Liar, I corrected him, Not a Liar, a Lawyer. What's the difference, he quipped. I got so angry at this final affront that I blurted out, you know something . . . a lawyer is not a bus, a lawyer is a piano! I showed him. Beth M. Mann Benjamin N. On my way up the hill to the examination room that sunny mm-ning I realized that I 'ci rather be writing childrevfs stories. Peter Ian Honigsberg New York University School of Law Currently: Writer of children's folk tales Imagine spending three years: ir memorizing the contents of 26 feet, 7 inches of books lapproximately 911 lbs., for those readers who are heavy thinkersj, 'lr listening to 1,800 hours of lectures, 'lr taking thirty examinations, and -A' spending 525,000 - S50,000, only to be told that all your reading, all your listening, all your money, and all your success on the examinations quallty you tor absolutely nothing except the right to take one more exam- the Bar Examination. Imagine now being told that the Bar Exam tests not so much what you learned in the 1,800 lecture hours or the 26 feet, 7 inches of books, but on your ability to completely memorize the contents of another eight-inch thick outline. Imagine next being told that in order to get this magic outline, you must pay an additional S800 and spend a couple of months at another school. Imagine going to this new school with the knowledge that even if you read the magic outline 18 yours a day, evict your teddy bear and sleep with the bar outline clutched to your breast, your chances of flunking the examination are one in two. Imagine sitting in the Bar Examination for three days, surrounded by grey-faced classmates trying desperately to make it into the top 50 percent. Imagine how you will feel if you succeed. Imagine how you will feel if you fail. Imagine how you will feel if you do something else entirely with your life. From 29 Reasons Wx ADAM FRIEDMAN RUSSELL FRIEDMAN MlCl-lAEL FRIEDSON Brooklyn, N.Y.
