The Budget Cut Imagine a school where students can join no extra-curricular activities, where there is no newspaper, no year- book, no plays, no clubs, and no Sing, because of lack of funds, where there are no teams, because there isn ' t even enough money for uniforms, where the center can not be open because schools must close immediately after the official school day ends, where no music, art or any other electives can be offered, and no one can take anything except the bare minimum required courses, where if your teacher is absent your class must be split up into other classes, possibly not even the same subject, where anything that you, the student, wants in order to enhance his educational life to something beyond books, tests, and studying cannot be attained. This would be the fate of the educational system in the city of New York if the cuts of the budget for the coming fiscal year were to go into effect. Although all of the above mentioned conditions would not immediately occur, it is quite safe to assume that once the city and state begins to tighten their purse strings, it would not be likely that they would easily let up. Besides the elimination of many school activities, the State University System has also been forced to curtail the enrollment of their Fall 1971 class. Though more people applied for this coming freshman year, the clas s size has been greatly reduced. In the future, the tuition and room and board prices will rise in order to cover costs. Education, however, though one of the ofcal points of the cutback, is not the only area affected. Up to 90,000 workers in a diverse group of the city ' s services could possibly lose their jobs. Recently, many thousands of city residents staged a demonstration at Albany to illustrate their disatisfaction about the budget cut. In addition to many people having their jobs eliminated, many services such as day care and addiction centers will be closed. The city ' s parks will be closed more hours per day because of lack of personnel. Unless the state and city can restore the funds it has planned on cutting. New York will begin to see a severe deterioration of much that it is now famous for offering.

You ' re A Good Man Charlie Brown You know, I don ' t know if you ' ll understand this or not, but sometimes, even when I ' m feeling very low, I ' ll see some little thing that will somehow renew my faith. Just something like that leaf, for instance — clinging to its tree in spite of wmd and storm. You know, that makes me think that courage and tenaci- ty are about the greatest values that a man can have. Suddenly my old confidence is back and I know things aren ' t half as bad as I make them out to be. Suddenly I know that with the strength of his convictions as man can move mountains, and I can proceed with full confidence in the basic goodness of my fellow man. I knowthat now.
