Man has many emotions, feelings, thoughts, and ideals which form his per- sonality, and make him into the person he is. He uses these emotions to say what he wants; to communicate with the rest of the world. A man is a conglomerate of a physical being as well as a spiritual and emo- tional one. He feels, he needs, he wants. There is a countless number of things man wants during his lifetime. The spectrum of these wants is extremely wide. A child wants a new toy, a man wants a raise, and a young girl wants a date. They are all similar. People desiring something is the common bond. Man has always wanted. As far back as civilization goes, man has tried to get things he couldn ' t have. With these efforts rose jealousy, depression, cun- ning, and evil. Not every manner used by man to acquire what he wanted was completely legitimate, and so many methods were tried. With all man ' s wants and needs came his hopes; those thoughts which have sustained him through thick and thin. It was these hopes that were the back- bone of every move he made — they guided him and told him what to do and how to do it. Regardless of the predicament he was in, man had hope. Sus- taining hope. If things were rough, he would hope for better. If things were good, he would hope for more. The present is upon us. The future is right around the corner. It is the year 1971. Our technology is running rampant, and we are caught in a sea of prob- lems. The war in Vietnam is still continuing to take its bloody toll upon us. We are poisoning our atmosphere and our waters. We have much building, both mental and physical, to do in our country. Now. Our most beautiful features are our people, and we are torturing them senselessly. The hope of today, like the hope of yesterday, still functions on the premise of the grass is always greener. But it is different in that people today are crying out their needs, hopes, and dreams. They are trying to show the world what has to be done before it is too late. We are thinking people with minds and a beautiful history of learning and knowledge. We can be rational and we can be smart. We can also be violent, cruel, and malicious. With our history of knowledge comes also our history of wars. Destroy. Kill. Murder. People do not want this. They want the best life they can have. We are getting caught up in a very vicious cycle. It must be stopped. Since hope influences everything we do, it is necessary to take this hope, combine it, and transform it to action. The people of this world deserve a saner, more peaceful way to live. There is no question about it. Our hope should be our salvation, no matter what the future brings. We should use it as a constructive tool in which to dig out of everything we have created. Individually we ' re hopeful dreamers. Collectively we ' re a strong society who could make the most out of our assets and eliminate our problems. Work through your hope. Try for your world. Where there ' s life, there ' s hope. Please.
