The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, fast, and patient. But also we knowf to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance Thomas Huxley With this wise quotation in mind, we, the Seniors of Benjamin Franklin High School, hope that our yearbook will remind us in the future of the elementary truth that the life and fortune of every one of us will depend upon our knowing something of the rules of a game vastly more difficult and complicated than chess. In this KEY we proudly pre- sent a record of the year's events of our school where we learned some of the names and the moves of the pieces of the all-important game of life. -a To you, Mr. Sabin, we the Senior Class dedicate the 7957 KEY We are proud to salute you, a king who has played the game with skill and with that overflowing kindness which has shown us it is often better Contents Advertisers Page 93 Administration -- the King The key figure of any chess game can move one square in any direction. The co-ordinators of all phases and operations of our school, the administration, like the king, will not he checkmated in its endeavor to give us the finest school that is possible. 5 Citizenship Education Seated: Mr, J. To corroborate this fallacious fallacy, we commit this document as testimony to our unabridged insanity, and thus apportion all of our unearthly possessions as such: To Mr. Sabin we leave our sincere thanks for the kindness, patience, and guidance he has dis- played toward us in our never-to-be-forgotten years at Franklin. To Miss Sullivan we leave an Eight-Fifteen Club to rival that of Mr. Stalker. To Mr. Hollander we wish success in coaching next year’s Seniors in the whys and wherefores of the A.C.E. and C.E.E.B. exams plus an elec- trographic pencil that never breaks. To Miss Carnahan, Mr. Du Bois, and Mr. Hoffman we leave colleges that do not require those dreaded transcripts of our high school records, a 3000-hour day, and our sincere thanks which even our most perfect grammar could not ex- press. To Mr, Iman we leave a television set that doesn't play Wyatt Earp or Mickey Mouse Club, To Mr. Boland we leave our best wishes and our thanks for making our stay at Franklin most enjoyable. To Mr. McHugh we bequeath a book on democ- racy, and a year's supply of lolly-pops with which to bribe future KEY staffs. To Mrs. Daly we prescribe a course in chemistry' which is not all in the book. To Miss Levin wc leave a large clamp so she can snatch more NEW YORK TIMES from un- wary pupils. To Mr. Sherwood we leave a cast for the Senior Play whose minds are not ' like sieves.'' To Miss Hess we leave a Virgil class. To Miss Rowley we leave a room with six cor- ners so that she can have more Siberias to deport students to. To Mr. Finnegan we leave a class that the next- door teachers will appreciate. To Mr. Hart w-e leave a hygiene class that under- stands. To Mr. Beach we leave a bullet proof referee’s cage for Battle Ball'' games. To Mr. Griffith we maintain the fact that evil triumphs over good.” To Mr. Quinn wre leave a lock for that secret little room in the basement so that nobody can find out w'hat's behind chat Green Door. To Mrs, Morsheimer we leave a new- eighth grade just filled with cavities. To Mr. Zornow and Mr. DeFrancesco we leave matched sets of wolf-whistles and plaid Ivy- League caps. To Herman we bequeath a box of No Grow' Grass Seed. To Mr. Stalker we leave------and he must be glad we re going. To Mr. Betten we leave mure efficient 8th graders to do his filing. To Miss Primer we leave a special kind of ma- chine ' which corrects all English compositions in five minutes on Friday afternoons. To Mr. Rahtjen we leave 200 free cases of Coca Cola for those noonday lunches of his. To Mr. Taylor we leave his long hoped-for mural of solid geometry diagrams to compensate for those miserable drawings of his students. To Mr. Perham we leave an honorary' appoint- ment to the Accident Prevention Bureau of our police department. To Mr. Clark we leave any book w'hich extols the virtues of the French Revolution. To our Senior Homeroom Teachers we leave that hackneyed summer of peace and quiet which we know they really need. To the present Sophomores we leave the hope of another Junior Day. To Miss Crowley we leave a frustrated junior class. To the seventh graders we bequeath There's A Long, Long Trail Awinding . , . , To Miss Clark we bequeath a key to Room 146. To Mr. Seils we leave that rare commodity: a student who is present at all times. To Mr. Mauer we leave a new lunch pail and a box- of napkins for his 4a lunch period. To Mr, Miller we leave a whistle to warn of his approach so that any listless chemistry student can perk up and look intelligent. To Mr. Bezant we confer a diploma in the fine art of baby sitting so that he can visit Franklin more often. To Miss Martens we leave our gratitude for the wisdom and warmth of her gracious personality. To Next Senior Class we bequeath SAT, CEEB, NYSRE, NHSS, NMSP, ACE, and Mr, Iman s economic quizzes. To the present Freshman we leave the joy of seeing Mr. Stalker's name in green ink. To the Eighth Graders w’e leave Ivanhoe's Odys- sey and Sir Walter Scott’s Homer. That this document of the insane, by the demented, and for the faculty shall not perish from this earth or other earths, the disbursement of our treasures is witnessed on this the 4th day of the 5th month in the year of our Lord one thousand-nine hundred-and fifty seven by all those of the Senior Class who are able to read, and is probated by Lenz, Kolko, and associates, surrogates at quackery. Activities -- The Pawn The Pawn is the one chessman with a real future ahead of him. He, the soldier of chesst starts life at the lowest rung in the ladder of chess, but he can look forward to promotion when he reaches his goal. Likewise, the students, the soldiers of BEN FRANKLINf always move forward leaving only interest- ing activities in their path. 49 Executive Council Front Row: Mr. Hollander, J. Hal wick, B.
