impressions ty THE KEY June 1933 Benjamin Franklin Junior-Senior High School Rochester, New York dedication The World’s Fair is the symbol of the progress achieved by men in ell fields during the lest forty years. Progress itself is perpetual! When the nebulas, the galaxies, and the universe were created, Progress then originated. Man is the child of Progress. Therefore, we, the class of June '33, dedicate our book to the Spirit of Progress. foreword The Chicago World s Fair of 1933 was chosen as the theme of our book, because it is contemporary to The Key. In future years, the fondest memories of Benjamin Franklin High School will be recalled by associating the date of our graduation with an event of world wide importance. Just as the Fair is the exposition of man’s past achieve- ments, may the class of June 33 be the fount of future s progress. standard bearer and custodian CRAK1.KK KINO OOKOTIIY COOK We shall with single purpose strive for strength in honor sought Alma Mater seniors class advisers r Miss Stewart ha? given unlimited service to our class. Besides holding the responsible position of class adviser, she has cooperated in formulating this book. We are grateful to Miss Stewart for what she has done. MISS FRANCES STEWART Mr. Chapell’s careful and diplomatic guid- ance in class affairs has been of great aid to us. He has given unreservedly his time and thought to our class and his enthusiasm has always stimulated our projects. M ISAAC A. CHAPKI.L As our life at Franklin High School draws to a close, we wish to thank Miss Frances Stewart and Mr. Isaac A. Chapell for their sympathetic and careful guidance. We. the class of June '33. leave our class advisers to the under graduates, and hope that many may have the good fortune to come in contact with their inspiring in- fluence. 8 ass off icers RODIN. PAS V A NICK. THOMPSON, KARON The class of June 1933 has been fortunate in the selection of its class officers. Charles Thompson, our president, with his tact and understanding has been a real leader. He has never missed an opportunity to do his best for the good of the class. Sam Baron has been an excellent vice-president. We have appreciated his faithful work. Gertrude PasmanicK. our secretary, has worked with us for a year. She has successfully carried out the duties of her office in addition to valuable service rendered to the school as student chairman of the Organizations Committee, Mortimer Kudin, our social chairman, has done much toward making each social function a success. We have had three dances. The Yuletide Frolic. The Junior Prom, and a Mid-Winter Garden Party. We are greatly indebted to these officers who have served us so well and to them we wish to express our sincere thanks. Helen D. Often this has required unstinted self-sacri lice, but their desire to see us reach the goal, which they had set for us. has over-ridden whatever sorrow or pain we may have caused. May we. if only for their sake, do our utmost in whatever field we enter, and bring honor to our- selves as well as to our parents. organizations executive counci MR. BUTTERFIELD One of the aims of our school is to establish a student government which is democratic, actually as well as theoretically. Since Franklin High School opened, considerable progress has been made towards this end. The most powerful group of our Student Government is the Executive Council, under the direction of the school officers. Our School Community President. Harry Bray, a member of our class, has proved a true leader. Kenneth Michaels, our Vice-President, is one of the most capable we have had, and Dorothy Cook, our Secretary, has been most efficient in fulfilling her duties. As the school has profited by the able leadership of these officers, so may there rise more such personalities in order to achieve greater progress in student government. 38 national honor society commercial honor society Si clubs Here the Heart May give a useful lesson to Hie head And learning wiser grow without his books. —William Coivper. name of i.UB SPONSOR Rios Better Friends Biology Boys' Out r.f Doom? The Benjamin Franklin High School Music Department is one ol which the student body may be justly proud. With the excellent leadership of .Mr. Karl Van Hoesen and the will- ingness of members to attend rehearsals with regularity, our orchestra has progressed to a point where it ranks with the other high school orchestras of the city. The programs presented in assembly have been enthusiastically received. With the opening of school in September, Mr. Van Hoesen will la on leave of absence for one year. We shall miss that capable leader- ship which has added so much to the musical life of the school. The A Cappella Choir under the aide direction of Mr. Marlowe G. Smith has maintained its previous record for tine choral singing. It has presented programs in assembly and at evening services at a number of the city’s largest churches. Judging from the size and attention of the audiences, these programs have met with approval. Members of the faculty aided by a chorus from the A Cappella Choir and accompanied by the orchestra presented a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera entitled “Trial by Jury. TA YJ.IJTT Through the earnest and tireless efforts of Mrs. Gertrude Taylert, direc- tor of dramatics, our weekly assembly programs have been entertaining. The presentations have lieen well balanced and educational. The Puppet Club gave a skillfully manipulated performance in their pre- sentation of the marionette show. Ali Babi and the Forty Thieves. ' The antics of the puppets were so enthusiastically applauded by the audience that a special performance was given for the benefit of those who were unable to attend the regular assembly. Ubung Macht der Meister. a comedy in German, was presented on March 8 by the members of the fourth year German class. Little knowl- edge of German was necessary to appreciate the performance as the pantomime conveyed the. plot excellently. Regina Grossman and Marion Elkind were capable as the two American girls who were allowed to accompany their parents to Germany on the condition they speak only German. Edna Vaivoda and Frieda Kahn played the parts of the two mothers. The roles of the two American youths who had followed the girls to Germany were cleverly handled by Eli Lipman and Alex Gossin. Pauline Newman was realistic as the German maid whose duty it was to see that the girls never spoke a word of English. In “Sauce for Gosling the conscientious parents, played by Morton Gold- stein and Theodore Ziemis, attempted to terminate the use of slang by their children by employing slang themselves in the presence of their son's guest. Eugene Grilli and Margaret Cimino played the parts of the son and daughter. Alfred Butterfield whs the college football hero and guest of Eugene Grilli. The role of grandmother was portrayed by Celia Cohen. Mrs. Taylert has received the whole-hearted co-operation of the students in the casts and this support can readily be discerned in the entertain- ment provided. 10 PlTGHiNG-HfrADimtfr’ City WIMMHUO CXAMPS GlRLS bASAfcTbALL CHAMP5 T AC A captain WW5TUNG- CAPTAINS pho ovbil-P-.AfnciwrsV - . .. 17 4K ww junior high school junior high advisers JUNIOK HIGH CCADOATKS 50 girls Anna Adamu Vhkrya Altnaiidr . Go West!’! The West had yet to be conquered. There were forests to he cleared and cut down for space to build log cabins, there were bridges to be built, and Indians to light. This was all very convincing to the young man and he took the advice willingly because of the adventure and daring involved. The young man together with his bride started out to blaze a new trail. It took courage together with physical strength to succeed. Today the advice given to a young man is “There are no lands yet to be discovered and conquered. You must now aid in overcoming the factors which hinder the progress of man!” Disease must now be controlled. War with other countries must be stopped. Brain power and creative thinking are now the main factors which keep the wheels of progress turning. Anna Rajneri progress Eighteen hundred! Progress has its start Every man must do his part. Dull-hued wagons and carriages gay Take peasant and queen upon their way. To cross the sea is an awful trial— What time of day by the old sun dial? Men could talk before a crowd. But learned women were not allowed. Nineteen hundred and thirty-three! Progress, progress, is what you see! Zeppelin great and planes on high Dot the blue of the changeless sky. So on and on we still progress And live to learn that none the less. Our Jiff? on earth is just to be A stepping-stone to Eternity. Catherine Dee, 9 a the ship of progress Upon the sea of life and time A beautiful ship comes sailing: Gone are its sails and wooden oars. Now there’s a motor unfailing. Slowly at first it had moved through the waves. But now it has quickened its speed With a challenge to all that has come in its way And all other vessels does lead. Upon its prow in a large golden word. Eight letters shine in the sun Telling the world as it sails along. Progress is never done. Catherine Nic holas, 9 A S3 junior high radio in the twentieth century The tremendous progress marie oy radio, in the last quarter of a century, has amazed the world with its rapidity. Many scientists and inventors had been experimenting with the sending of electric waves through the ether, when Marconi, in 1890. was successful in sending and receiving a wireless message across the English Channel, a distance of thirty-two miles. Thus established the practical value of radio, but there were many people who did not believe in it. Marconi however, in 1901. proved the value of the radio to the world by sending a wireless message across the Atlantic Ocean. While Marconi was experimenting with the wireless, many scientists were finding new and important facts, which later aided in the development of the radio. The imagination of the people was aroused by a shipwreck, in which the wireless saved the lives of a great number of people. Then the General Electric Company met with success in long-range transmission and designed new instruments which were far superior to the apparatus formerly used. The first attempt proved that it was possible to send the human voice through the air for thousands of miles, and was an important step in pre- paring for nation-wide broadcasting, which took the country by storm in 1921. The first popular broadcasting, such as we now have, was carried out by the Westinghuuse Electric Company, which sent out the 1920 presi- dential election returns from their station, and continued daily to give lectures and concerts to those who had the apparatus to listen in. In a few years figures showed an amazing growth in the radio industry, and the radio became a part of the home. The types of radio sets improved as the years passed and now we have sets which receive and transmit music, s|leeches, and even drama, in A clear and even tone. The remarkable rise of radio in the early part of the twentieth century shows how fast our civilization is progressing. The radio has become a necessity with which we could now not easily dispense. Because of its tremendous progress and increasing usefulness, radio is classed as one of the most important factors in our development in the last century. 54 Bernard Isaacson, 9A features forty-four famous figures l. And so Boopa-Doopa has grown; and in th. year 1907, an outsider came to this paradise in the Pacific, bringing with him new-fan- gled contraption, called an auto. The thing still ran and was used by the President. “So Boopa-Doopa is a republic. Said Sir Lawrence. “Yes, raid the President. I must Mil you about it.
