' mm:f 1: V EIVAng 1963 ALMANAC ALMA MATER Sing we of Franklin Marching together School of our very soul; Onward we gladly go Integrity thy pride, honor, thy goal. Loving our noble school Long may thy colors wave Fearing no foe. Borne by the true and brave, Loyal to Franklin High Praise we the blue and gold Thus may we live and die Through years untold. Faithful to blue and gold Through years untold. Ini'l-lt w m , glx e BEN J AMI N F RAN KLI N H 1 GH SCHOOL PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA F ORE WORD 46For though the American youth are allowed not to want capacity; yet the best capacities require cultivation, it being truly with them, as with the best ground, which unless well tilled and sowed with profitable seed, produces only ranker weeds. That we may obtain the advantages arising from an increase of knowledge, and prevent as much as may be the mischievous consequences that would attend a gen- eral ignorance among us The idea of what is true merit should also be of- ten presented to youth, ex- plained and impressed on their minds, as consisting in an inclination joined with an ability to serve mankind, one,s country, friends and family; which ability is to be acquired or greatly increased by true learning; and should indeed be the great aim and end of all learning? The Kite and Key program, initiated a year ago, has met with increasing enthusiasm from our students, the parents, and the community as a whole. As a result, we can already observe with real satisfaction the following benefits: a more favorable image of our school, a more effective vocational and educational guidance program, a busy and productive afternoon and evening study-tutoring pro- gram, organized home visiting at night, a cultural enrichment course, as well as a program involving theatre shows, orchestra concerts and visits to museums in this city and elsewhere. All of these en- riching experiences have in turn stimulated a significant increase in after school clubs and activities, and have been a factor in reducing the drop-out rate and increasing the interest in post high school education. With these wholesome, constructive results, we are encouraged to continue using every means to further develop the rich resources in ability and talent we find in many of our students. It is my sincere hope that the inspiration and motivation you received through our K 8: K program will serve you throughout a happy and successful life. I. L. Horowitz Dr. Horowitz delivering some choice words to the student body during one of our assembly programs. VICE PR1 N CI PAL The completion of a high school career is a virtual necessity for a young man who hopes to attain success in life. You may be proud of your achievement in being graduated from the Benj amin Franklin High School. Your future will depend in large measure upon how well you use your talents and training, and upon the amount of effort which you will be willing to expend to attain sucCess. I congratulate you on your graduation and I extend my very best wishes to each of you for a happy and successful life. Sincerely, Joseph B. Hearn. A very delicate problem has the attention of the schoolhs chief administrators. FAC ULTY w WA 6 9 D 99,99 tk I In the last few years there has been a considerable emphasis placed on the use of gtteaching ma- chinesg, in the field of education. There is nothing new about ttteaching machines? They are as old as education itself. The ttteaching machine? present the individual student with programs of questions and answers, problems to be solved and exercises to be performed. This is based on the Socratic plan of teaching. But in modern times, there is one teacher to one classroom of students of assorted intellects, back- ground, ambitions and drives. At Benjamin F ranklin, the teachers and students realize only too well that learning cannot be ful- filled if we rely too much on the ttteaching machineab method. It has been the personal contact, warm understanding, and individual attention given by the faculty to the students of our school that has made knowledge more than a matter of filling in blanks at our noble school. It is an honor and distinction to receive the titles of seniors and graduates. As seniors and new graduates, we realize that the world demands maturity in outlook, viewpoint, workmanship, sociability, and citizenship. We, the graduating class of 1963, feel certain that these demands can be met as a result of the education received at' our renowned school. It is with pride and honor that we salute the many people connected with our school who gave us a helping hand in order to make our graduation a joyful reality. Mr. Franklin was the founder of this magazine. 40 FAREWELL Now that you have done some reminiscing with us while looking through this yearbook, we come to the time when the class wishes to say farewell to the many friends we have made during our stay at Franklin. Whenever and wherever we meet fellow Franklinites, it will be a natural thing for us to recall some of the many worthwhile experiences as former students. We hope that our paths will lead us toward success and happiness throughout life. As graduates, we wish to state our indebtedness to a faculty which has furnished us with three years of schooling that should carry us over many an obstacle as adult citizens of this great country, and surely have aided us to meet the tremendous challenges of the complex world that looms ahead. Farewell ! AU REVOIR, GRADUATES! The true fruits of our production are certainly reward- ing when we see members of the graduating class and friends discussing the many pictures, testimonies, cap- tions, and credits found on the pages of the yearbook. The Almanac staff wants the graduates to feel proud of this permanent record, and refer to the book on occa- sions when they might want to contact a fellow classmate, discuss ttold times? or just settle back with some pleasur- able reading material. Good luck, classes of January and June 763! Mr. William J. Deery Jr. Almanac Sponsor, and the staff of the Almanac. 4l SPOR TS The physical prowess of our athletic minded students was exemplary as in past years. Not only did our athletes show the usual courage and good sportsmanship which are synonymous with true F ranklinites, but the team records for the 62, ,63 seasons candidly showed that F ranklin teams played hard, competitive contests. Hail to the warriors of F ranklin HightHail to the true and bolthheirs is the will to do or diehFor the blue and the gold. If form means anything, this one is a homerun. Good Block! We of Franklin raise our voices loud and clear in praise of these students and their advisers who had given time and energy to make our school a much better place to study and participate.
