The finished product of many days of work, a huge paper rnaehe bulldog, is .shown surrounded by its crea- tors Carl Bruce, Byron Moellenkamp, Eleanor jones, Jerry Mullen and Marsha Hamilton.. We Spread Spirit. . . MANY THINCS have happened at Bosse in the past four years and many more things will happen in the next four and the four after thatg but for some 400 seniors today only the past four count - and they will be re- lived forever. Bosse had spirit these last four years. The spirit was everpresent, lapsing at times but vibrant and mellow in the end. This spirit, the Spirit of ,58, will make Bosse seniors remember the four best years of their lives. SENIORS WILL REMEMBER their first days at the alma mater, the confusion of classes, the pressure of meeting different requirements, and most of all, the loneliness of finding long-time friends gravitate toward other interests as the massive walls engulfed another freshman class. But out of the confusion, pressure and loneliness grew a new way of life - a life that in the sophomore and junior years became a second home. And finally, came that magic senior year that blossomed into the most en- joyable nine months of a senior's first 17 years. OUT OF THESE FOUR years come many memories to the senior - memories of that New York trip - the mad scramble for suitcases and weary feet after long but fabulous days in Washington and those glorious nights in the Big City. Walks, not any particular walks, will also be remem- bered. Seniors will remember walking through the halls after that pep club or NHS meeting, listening to the click-claek of their heels as they sounded against the empty and darkened halls, resounding up and down the stairs until they finally drifted out of hearing distance. NO ONE WILL FORGET sectionals that brought a vibrant cheering section arrayed in bright red alpine hats and a super-size paper-maehe bulldog made by the ever- active Pep Club. Take some pickles, sandwiches, potato chips and cokesgi in the fall for this picnic which started the hall of fun throw in ll troupe of Thespians - and the outcome - a rolling for one of the sacietyls most aetiue years, sparkling potion of picnic fun. Thespians gatherecl early ln Activities Galore. In spare time between term papers and the grind of homework, seniors gathered in the snow to huild tradi- tional snowmen or splatter each other with the Sloshy, white stuff. Aspiring journalists gathered in the Spiriti' office between editions to do the stroll or join in a jam session. SENIOR VVEEK will always be remembered. That wonderful picnic, the hacealanreate services, and finally, the night when the seniors walked to the platform to receive the diploma that will always be more than just a piece of paper. And, as many times before, the tears came. After the caps and gowns were shed and the tears dried, seniors were off to the eonnneneemeiit dance. It too, will never be forgotten, nor will the breakfasts and parties afterwards. Commeneement means the beginning. hut to some 400 seniors it meant the end of four good years and a new way of life. BESIDES THE EVENTS, seniors will rememher people - people whom they nearly lived with in their new home for four years. People that sat next to them in American Problems, people that helped them with that tough Trig problem and people who were just there, creating that Spirit of i78.'i The seniors will graduate this year. feeling as if this must have heen the greatest year in Bosse lligh history. Brit the other classes felt the same, remembered the same things and lived the same life. It was a great tour years to the seniors. Not many days after graduation the seniors will have heen forgotten. Their deeds will he only reeords, scrih- lulings in the Book of Time from the class of '58. The juniors will take over and the elass of ,555 will just have been another graduating class at Bosse High. But to the seniors, the Spirit of ,58 will never die. Al- ways, it will he the only spirit - the spirit of good times - the Spirit of '58. 4 at 2' im A W V Q A. ..,. ve fr an tr.. . 1 gs My t dj!-k 1 Ant : wx--me W, ' H Q, we f Z' A ' A 1- ' ae W ,I Q: do . Maxwell Davis was heading this campaign to estahlish an advanced lmiology class, According to his standards for the class, a student must have had an AH average in hiology and completed or he completing physics and chemistry. In this class students delved deep into the innards of squids, and sharks with handy razor hlacles, forceps, and scissors. These avid biologists also directed pigs. In addition to optional courses in Advanced biology and YVord power, at least one semester of each college- hound senior's year was devoted to Advanced Compo- sition. It was in these classes that most of us wrote our first term papers. Most of us will remeinher long nights under desk lamps and lost weekends spent in lihraiy files digging up information and references for these vital theses. XVait- ing there to serve us was a stall' of assistants, ready to arm us with papcr, pencils, erascrs and other parapher- nalia for the dayis Work. As the hours passed, it was not unusual to he called into one of the offices for some reasong these ottices were also the place where many of us put our talcnts to work hy delivering call slips, answering the phone, typing and performing other useful functions to aid the smooth administration of the school. Of course, there were the many inevitahle hours we spent in the classrooms. Most of the time we enjoyed the interesting suhjects and personable teachers, hut there were alway those few times when we would heconxe horcd, and would nervously sneak glances at the clock, which was seldom correct. The athletic office was an- other popular gathering place. Both hetwcen classes and after school, wc would stop here to check on the time for athletic events, turn in cligihility cards, pur- chase tickets for games or stickers for our cars, or per- haps just exchauge the latest gossip with the asistants working thcre. And also we knew that study hall would always he a reminder ol' those who had difficulty in conforming to the rules liy which our lives at llossc were determined. lu our happier moments, when the gloom ol' deten- tion was not hovering over us, we would leave school in a hurst of gaiety, perhaps to hop into the car of one ol' our friends to go riding. lt wasnlt really important what kind of car it was - iust as long as it ran and would get us where we were going. XYhat rr-ally mat- tered was the fun that one could have in the car, laying. tor the moment, the weighty cares ol' school lille far hehind. THE COMMUNITY CENTER was another place where we often went to get away from it all. XYc went on NVednesday nights, clad in llermudas, hlue leans, or other types ol' casual wear. Listening to records, usually spun hy a popular local disc jockey, we danced the hours away, consumed Cokes and other food, and talked to lricnds from our and other schools, l'rulay night at the center was a more lormal allair. XXX' tossed on our glad rags and spent the evening dancing to the dreamy melodies ol' an orchestra. Anticipation runs' high as these students look forward to I1 possible .state crown for their Imilrlogs. This scene is typical of the enthu.s-iusm that reigns in our halls during all athletic events. One of the unusual affairs which took place around school was the style show, sponsored hy a local cloth- ing store. Xlemhers ol' Student Council and the foreign student committee pitched in and helped to make the program a really' big success. The theme was centered around Bosses foreign exchange student, Anastasia Baka of Greece. It portrayed many of her experiences in America, and at the same time revealed many new styles for the teenage set. All in all, it was a worthy project and we all had a good time producing it. ANIONC ALL THIS HUM of activity were the times when the campus trees and flowers were in full hloom. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and we were just too 'ispriiig-fcvcrishl' to do anything except sit under a full-hlossomed tree. VVe always took a lot -of pride in our campus, which is one of the most heau- tit-ul in the city. and tried to keep it reasonably clean. The athletic ollicc, located in a convenient spot near the boys, gym and the journalism room. was a husy and popular place. Under the direction of Charles Nic- Clary. athletic manager. this office was smoothly-run and friendly. ln addition, it was the hest place to go when we wanted information concerning any athletic events, or to purchase tickets or other necessities. A less official service of this estahlishment was to serve as a place for exchanging the latest news and just passing time in general. These things were just a few details which helped make our years at Bosse the happiest. the most educa- tional. and the most spirit-filled 'of our lives, Cur Teams Showed Outstanding Spirit BOSSE EN-IUYED om- of its F1111-st sports smisons. As they dressed for that final game, many were thinking hack to when they first came to Enlow Field. Many of them had started playing for Bosse as Cubs when they were in the seventh grade. Now, here they were, elimaxing four rugged, hard, hut wonderful years on the Bulldog gridiron. They had spent these years with the same group of hoys learning good sportsnumship, and learning to aeeept the defeats with the vietories. Even though our senior hoys were not on a eity championship squad, they had played on squads that had won eity, and they knew that even though they did not Win the ehampionship, they were still playing on a championship club. Our hoys never gave up, even when the odds were so great that it seemed a waste of time to field a team. These must have heen the thoughts that many were thinking that muddy, rainy day, when the seniors ended their foothall careers for Bosse. 18 C. Iiolzertxozi, F. .lIll'Illlf'IfS', XY. Bell, 1. Senior pole oaulter Dave Freeman shows the skill needed for pole uaulting and rlemonstrates the form which won him hrst place in the Petersburg relays and SIAC meet. 22 Sprinters Pace OUR TRACK SQUAD under the guidance of Coach Max Smith cut a wide swath in the win column this season. We swept over six city track foes, in addition to many ont-of-town schools and we won the Petersburg Relays for the third time in as many years. YVe also won the city meet for our third year in a row. Then we traveled to New Albany for the annual SIAC meet, which we lost to New Albany for our first and only defeat. As the senior edition went to press, we were still faced with the sectional, regional and state meets. The hulk of the work on the track squad was carried hy the Big Threev this year, composed of seniors Bruce Brazelton, VVayne Talarzyk, and junior hurdler and sprint man Ronnie Snodgrass. Brazelton ran the 100, 220, 440, and the mile and half-mile relay, however, his specialty was the 440. It was a privilege to watch Talarzyk, the man with the iron lungs, run the mile and the half-mile with ease. During the SIAC meet, he ran hoth the mile and the half-mile, winning both hut was disqualilied in the half-mile for allegedly shoving a man on the first turn. Snodgrass, easily the cityls hest in the hurdles, had the best times in 'the high hurdles and set a new city record in the lows. Setting records seems to he a hobby for Ronnie, as he now holds the Freshman low hurdle record, and the Freshman SIAC record in the same event. Coaches Max Smith ancl Guy Anclress hold an impromptu conference as they watch their charges prepare them- selves for an all-important meet. Bulldogs To Victory Although these three spec-dsters were the Big Tlll'l'l'.,, they could never Win a meet hy themselves. They had to have many good boys backing them up and Well they did. Dave Freeman, senior pole vaulter, who blossomed out this year after relatively staying in the haekground, chose his senior year as his year to shine. After placing fourth in the City Meet, he went on to tie the city champ for first place in the lletcrshurg Relays and the conference meet. Freddie Bosse, wt-ll known in athletics during his four-year tenure at Bosse, also fared very well in the pole vault. Tom Young, senior high jumper, won the city meet this year, as he soared to a height of 5 ft.-ll in. Although outshone hy Snodgrass in the hurdles, Dick Alhin was always out there giving his all for Bosse. -lim Alderson and Don Lcllnc took turns running on one of the Hnest half-mile relay teams we ever had. Adrian Fleming, discovered in a gym class, was invited to try out for the squad, and participated in the broad jump. During our four years at Bosse these boys and many othcrs gave us many fine track squads and many chznnpionships. 1957-58 varsity track squad - Ist row, left to right - T. Ynung, H. Turner, D. BASEBALL, coached hy Art Acker, got off to a slow start this year, but after they got a few games under their br-lt, they turned on the steam and at the time senior edition went to press hey had a win streak of four games going. Spring rains slowed the team down in early May. Before their first game they had only a few practices in which to thaw out their winter kinks. Opening their season with two losses to XVadesville, and Jasper, 3-1 and 4-2, respectively, our team finally got in the win col- umn, downing Mater Dei in their third game, 9-0. After dropping their fourth gaune to Memorial, 4-2, our glovemen started their win streak. First came Tell City, 9-1, then North 4-0, all falling to the 1low-experienced dizunontl crew. Lincoln fell to our squad 24-l. Next a previously un- beaten Pieitz team came tumbling down, 3-2, under our powerful force. Seniors Eddie Epperson, Torn Dorris, Don Hess, Ron Folz and Barry John- son all helped to stage the win streak. These seniors were hacked by a powerful squad of nnderclassmen. The hunt signal is on, and senior Don Ilcss reaches out for the bail in an attempt to sacrifice ri Bossa runner flown to .second base. Several students took the children from Hill- erest Children's Home to Meskor Zoo. Others visited the Crippled Childreifs Rehabilitation Center in Chand- ler, Indiana, and the Neighborhood House in Evansville. These students painted and rebuilt pieces of furniture. THE EDUCATION COBIMITTEE headed by Sandra Altheide and Howard Turner, eo-chairmen, revised the student hand book that is always given to the fresh- men in the fall. Their committee made phone hooks with every student's name, address and phone number in it. This committee was also in charge of the Orien- tation Day for freshmen. There have been many changes made, safety wise, around Bosse thanks to the Safety Committee headed hy Mike Clippinger and Dan Breidenhaeh. The familiar posters around scho-ol publicizing events and proieets were the results of many hours of labor on the part of the Pubilicity Committee headed by Mike Traw and .leanne VVellborn. Starring in the comedy were Margo Pascoe, Jim Sonnemaker and Sherry Schnell. Diane Haas, David Rogge, Duane Campbell and Larry Burton also had leading roles in the play which revolved around a young manis financial dilemma and love life. As stage managers for the play, Jane Ritter and Ken Bonham supervised backstage activities. JUDY WRIGHT AND MIKE HARD organized the Thespians first s-ocial function - an October picnic at Mesker Zoo. In November a busload of Thespians Went to Indianapolis to see the road companyls production of My Fair Ladyf, starring Anne Rodgers and Brian Aherne. Initiated into the Society were over 30 pledges. To be eligible for membership, one must have Worked over 100 hours on Thespian productions. As a pledge, the student was practically enslaved to the superior Thes- pians. Carrying hooks and trays was only one part of their pledge duties. ON THE DAY OF INFORMAL initiation, pledges were easily distinguished by the cardboard Ts, hang- ing around their necks. Informal initiation was culmi- nated after school on stage with the pledges perform- ing original skits for the Thespians. Pledges were also required to provide refreshments for the members. For- mal initiation, a candle-lighting ceremony and a rc- ception, were held the following evening. North High School invited the Bosse chapter to in- stall their newly-formed Society. Twenty-one members were initiated into the Thespian group to be sponsored by Miss Carol Talflinger. The ceremony of signing the charter took place on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1957.
