From the appearance of the picture one might think all students do here is play, But looks are deceiving, for here the students work. study, and learn as well as have fun. Striving for achieve- ment and building good character are all a part of Bosse. 'Bursting her seams and popping her buttons at the same Bursting her seams and popping her buttons at the same time, Bosse is proud of every student-all 2,150 of them. Bosse's Bursting Wit eop le YES, BOSSE BURST HER SEAMS this year as 2,150 students pushed their ways through the halls, inched their ways up the one-way stairs. and elbowed their ways into the cafeteria. The class rooms and even the auditorium, could not house all of Bosses charges, To accommodate the increasing population, a new system of schedules was devised, Although it was diffi- cult at first. the eight period day with its early and late shifts proved itself in the long run. Witli the early shift rushing to class at 7:30 A.M. and leaving at 2:50 RM. and the late shift arriving and leaving an hour later, Bosse looked much like a factory. Freshmen dreamed of the assemblies as they sat in their homerooms. Due to their large class, they were unable to attend. But this was advantageous, for it gave the frosh a badly needed study hall. From Paris, France to the Mock Conven- tion, people were glad to see Bosse arrive. A few years ago the PTA adopted a boy in Paris. The PTA, aided by the Girls' Club Council. raised money for his SLIP- port. Danny Berder has truly felt the effects of Bosses far-reaching hospitality. Last year a tiny school in Ken- tucky became Bosses second helping hand project. In the fun line a new tradition was instituted as Eddie Baum was crowned king of the Dames Ball. The students danced in the boys' gym, which was completely transformed for the event by tissue-flowered trees, a crete paper ceiling, and a lighted chandelier. In May the political front come to life as the upper- classmen presented a mock democratic convention, The donkey brayed, and the rooster crowed as students rep- resenting each state gathered to nominate their favorite son. New York and Vfashington, D. C., were cheered by Bosse faces this spring and fall. These semi-annual trips were not only educational but were filled with fun. Quill and Scroll BOSSE'S CHAPTER OF QUILL AND SCROLL elected eight new ofiicers and took in twenty new members to highlight its activities for the year. The olficers were Mike Rea, president, Nancy Emerson, vice president, Sandy Bedwell, recording secretary, Ginny Dieckman, corresponding secretary, and Doug VanBibber, treasurer. Other OHL-ICEYS included Clarence Rahm, second vice president, Sally Bryan, sergeant-at-arms, and David julian, pledge master. In order to join the Melvin Bertram Chapter of Quill and Scroll, one must be an uppetclassman, must be recommended by his advisor and approved by the executive secretary. Out- standing work in the field of journalism is the final requirea ment to join. The purpose of the society is to encourage and to reward individual achievement in journalism. Quill and Scroll also tries to raise the standards of the held of journalism and to encourage students to choose a journalistic career. National I-lonor Society THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY did much to eliminate the misunderstandings that students had about the society and to make valuable improvements to the general organization. The juniors installed last year are Virginia Baird, Eddie Baum, Avery Carmack, Sara Coleman, Hardy Curd, Nancy Emerson, Roger Hotz, Sandra Moore, Don Plane, Gordon Seilfertt, Henry Schroeder, Bill Woods and Larry Rampy. They chose Eddie Baum as president, Henry Schroeder, vice-president, Virginia Baird, secretary, and Larry Rampy, treasurer. With the help of their sponsor, Miss Helen Stoutenborough, the National Honor Society members rewrote many of the by- laws and changed the entire manner in which new members were to be chosen. New members are still picked according to Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service, but petitioning was eliminated and now each student is rated by all the teach- ers that know him. In this year's induction ceremony, the Society took in 50 seniors and I2 juniors. Explanations of the symbols and the emblem were given by Avery Carmack, who spoke on Leadership, Don Plane, who told the qualities of a good scholarg Sara Coleman explained Service, Sandy Moore spoke on Character, and Larry Rampy explained the emblem. Band,Orchestra Win State l-lon THE MARCHING BAND and concert orchestra, bustin ' out with eighty-six members in the first and forty members in the last, have presented Bosse with one of its biggest mu- sical years. The marching band, under the direction of Larry johnson, functioned from the very beginning of school, at the first pep assembly and first football game. Heading the eighty member organization were band officers Von Siekman, captain, Bill Chapman, first lieutenant, john James. drum majorg and Mar- garet Farley, adiutant. Second lieutenants were Gordon Seif- fert, Bruce Blackburn, Sue Kaetzel and Roger Hotz. Maiorette co-captains were Pat Cobb and Pat Ulsas. The others in the corps were Suzy Graupner, Jackie Hartig, Pat Stevenson and Nancy Fisher. THROUGHOUT THE SEASON, the band used new steps and flashy entrances for razzle-dazzle displays at pre-game and halftime shows. A World Series show, featuring a ptancing majorette infield, and the Rhythm and jazz show, highlight- ing the band itself in dance routines. were big hits. The latter show used two girls with fire batons and a blacked-out field with the band playing background music by Stan Kenton. Following the football season the band settled down to concerts. while the dance band organized a club. Out of the six thousand Hoosier students competing, Bosse had six soloists place in Division I, six in Division ll, and one in Division lll. The band also took one superior rating and seven ensemble victories. The forty members of the concert orchestra had as their officers Sara Coleman as president with Paul Becker, vice- president, and Diana Bickel. secretary, The annual Nite With Music and the Kiwanis Arion Award assembly were the highlights of the second semester. Gordon Seiffert and Paul Becker were the award winners from the orchestra and band, respectively. The Nite With Music featured Dianna Bickel as cello soloist and a ballet group on the orchestra half of the show. The band featured a coroner trio of Bill Chapman, Ronnie Brown and Gordon Seiffert. along with some special trom- bone features. With one game remaining in the season. the Bulldogs were knotted with the hilltop nine in the quest of the title toga but when the call came the Bosse diamond enyoys responded and annexed the championship in a blaze of glory. Cindermen Win City Til: ALTHOUGII the l95o football and basketball teams had bad seasons this year, the track ICLUII proved to be a welcome ex- ception. Coach Max Smiths thinlies copped all but one meet before reaching the regionals. All ot the Bulldogs' dual meets were taken by large margins and the city and sectional meets by comfortable leads. The cindermen not only won honors and awards for themselves, but they also gave Bosse its tirst and only city championship of the year. The track meets were fol- lowed by Bosse students more than ever before. The main reason for the good attendance and enthusiasm of Bosse students was the great performances displayed by such boys as joe Voyles, who vaulted a record 127 LQ and Charlie Siesky. who churned the mile in a record-breaking 415111. The half-mile relay consisted of Warner Spencer, jerry Nichols, Bob McClary and Russ Seller, developed into the best relay teams ever seen at Bosse. Next year's track hopes will be promising with such sopho- mores as Bruce Brazelton, Dick Stremming, Doug Cfarmack and high jumper Don Mobley returning. Bosses linksmen proved to have a very successful season, tin- ishing the scheduled matches with only two losses while win- ning seven. The golfers started the season oft' with a bang by winning their hrst hve matches before falling to a strong Bed- ford crew at the Bedford course, 5-10. In the first match of the season the 'Dogs overpowered Central Mk-QM, then went on to win a four-way meet from Vincennes, Central and Reitz, being 1716 points ahead of their closest opponent. Next they took on Reitz in a dual match, wfnnlng HW-SLQ. Right before the SIAC match they chalked up another vic- tory against the Panther golfers in their last dual match of the season, winning MM-CIM. DAVID DLJDLEY, our principal, will always be remembered by us for his attention and concern over our wel- fare, He and his wife attended all our athletic events and theatrical pro- ductions, showing as much enthusiasm as any of the students. Mr. Dudley has several hobbies. He spends his spate time taking colored pictures and working in his garden. Summers usually include several short motor trips. The '56 class thanks Mt. Dudley for ADRIAN MEADOXVS, our assistant priiicipal. guided our lives very closely. He made sure we came to school and planned our programs for the school hours too. We remember all the call slips we got from him and how harm- less they usually were, Most of all we remem- ber his patience and understanding in our problems with programs and attendance and than him very much for his help during our years at Bosse. all the help and interest he has shown us in our four years at Bosse. Dean of Girls, has watched and helped us in our troubles and plans, thereby winning our confidence and friendship. Entering Bosse, she calmed our fears of the new school by welcoming each of us personally in an interview in her office. We all appreciated her attention and the opportunity to get acquainted. Since that time she has helped us in many ways: giving the freshman girls a party, supervising IZCIA clubs. and organizing the Girls' Club Council. Miss Long has been Dean of Girls for a number of years. Showing that throughout the years her interest and understanding never change, she explains that though the girls come and go always, each and every girl seems sweet to me. Thfs year is Miss Longs last year as Dean of Girls. We regret that others in the future will not have the privilege of her guidance, and we wish to thank her for her kindness and attention. RALPH MAYES, Boys' Counsellor, has lent a helping hand to boys and girls alike. He has aided the boys in all their troubles. making the way through Bosse a simpler and more pleasant thing. Collecting our lost and found articles was one of the services Mr. Mayes rendered. Many valuable things would have been lost without his patience in keeping them for us until we came to claim them. Help in selecting colleges is given in our senior year. Mr. Mayes talks to anyone who wishes guidance in making this big decision. His oflice contains many yearbooks and bulletins from colleges over the country. A busy man, he also conducts college scholastic and voca- tional tests, advises student council. and plans the Kiwanis Go-To-College program. MRS. GEORGIA NORDHAUS, our school nurse, guided us through all our ills and chills. and helped prevent many health problems by her vigilance. Peering dimly at weird eye charts seemed to be our main business in her ofhce. Periodically we were sent to a room, bound up in strange machinery, and told. simply. to listen. THE CLASS OF 1956 bounded into Bosse in 1952 with the biggest freshman class ever to enter the portals.
