Replacing Carl Eiiler as principal, David Dudley imme- diately found his way into our hearts and activities. Cain- ing valuable experience as principal of Wheeler Grade School and Culver Grade School, Mr. Dudley entered our Bosse family circle well-equipped with a keen faculty for understanding and working with young people. Further proof of his ability for leadership may be found in the fact that Mr. Dudley was president of the local Rotary Club last year. He also held the position of director of elemen- tary education. Affairs of the upstairs ofhce, includ- ing the problems of student pro- grams, absenteeism and discipline were eiliciently supervised by Adrian Meadows, our assistant principal. Discounting those few instances when necessity demanded that he adminster some fomi of discipline, memories of our dealing with Mr. Meadows will always furnish us with pleasant reflections. We felt quite free to seek audience with our as- sistant principal at any time, upon any matter. Most frequently we turned to Mr. Meadows when problems of con- fiicting schedules confronted us. It was he who made certain that we were aware of all graduation require- ments and that we worked toward meeting them. Our personal problems received the special attention of our guidance counselor, Ralph Mayes, who helped us End the best paths to follow. Sewing as general advisor and ad- ministrator of our student govem- ment program, Mr. Mayes worked tirelessly, setting before us sugges- tions and ideas which proved bene- ficial to the entire student body. Many of us will cherish happy memories of hours we spent with Mr. Mayes working as student assistants. For others the memories will be of aptitude tests, friendly chats on vo- cations, scholarship applications, or that confusing question, Where shall I go to college? 4 In an atmosphore of cordial wannth with which she furnished her ollice, feminine affairs of our student body were handled by Miss Ena Long, dean of girls. Students merely encountering her in their regular course of high school activities found Miss Long genuinely interested in their well-being and had confidence in her guidance and judgment. Through the Girls Club Council, of which she was sponsor, many of us came to know our dean of girls intimately. Also concemed with the various extra-curricular activities at Bosse, she made general arrange- ments for ECA clubs, checked their attendance and encouraged students to participate in club activities. 4 f l Always helping us through our problems, consistently going out of their way for our good were our sponsors, Mrs. Eleanor Gregory and Herman Keller. All of our class proiects were successful due to their hard work. Never was there a time when they weren't willing to help guide us through our problems and help us carry out our ideas. Their consideration will long be remembered because they helped make our years at Bosse something to hold in our hearts forever. Our faculty exceeded all others. Through four years of high school we struggled, many times falling, but always with their aid we retraced our steps. Our friends, not just instructors, would be a better label for our faculty. They helped us when- ever they could with our studies and also with our outside activities. lVe won't forget our new principal, David Dud- ley, or Mr. Charles McClary and his scirmishes with the athletic funds. It was this spirit, which he possessed, that made him such an active participant in the activities of the Hi-Y, the Pep Club, orchestra, Senior Talent Day and swimming. Every student or teacher who came in contact with Ierry's friend- ly smile felt some small portion of his radiant personality. He had that something which many people strive a lifetime to gain, the ability to make friends. I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away. NVitl1 a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be since he lingers there. And you - O you, who with wildest yeam For his old-time step and the glad return- Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here, Think of him still as the same, I say, He is not dead - he is just awayli' 8 1 111 I seniors tor their outstanding traits most intelligent rita stuart don bailey done most for seniors jerry baugh caroline lukens best looking jim hardesty martha wilson most sincere patty slyker paul rodeman 10 ' Y we votecl these superlative , .,-.v N . 1 XX. Don earned Scholarship B, Scarlet and Cray and Committee of One throughout his high school career. He was initiated into the National Honor Society in his junior year. Be- sides being elected as senior presi- dent, he also served as sophomore president. He was an active member of Student Council being chainnan of Building and Grounds committee and a member of the Control board. His team buddies elected him foot- ball captain after he had played on the varsity squad team for three years. He also participated in track and received two varsity letters. Don plans to attend college and may enter into minsterial work. Pete Salm, a member of VVoodrow Pembei-ton's homeroom, served as treasurer of the 1951 Senior Class. Pete was on Committe of One for three years and received Scarlet and Gray for four years. As a freshman he served on the freshman party com- mittee and was master of ceremonies for the sophomore party. Pete plays the alto saxophone in the band and also acts as first lieutenant. He is a member of the Legislative com- ' mittee of the Student Council. Pete appeared in freshman, junior and senior Talent Days. He also served on the talent selection committee for Senior Talent Day. we cfzade gaacfleacfead... In all the rush of our many senior activities led by the senior offi- cers, we must not forget those who headed our class in former years. W'hen we were freshmen the student council used us as guinea pigs to try out the idea of campaigning in class elections. We chose Richard Klipsch, presidentg Bob L. Campbell, vice presidentg Caro- line Lukens, secretary, and Lewis Plane, treasurer, to worry with the freshman party and other activities during that first hard year. The next year we let Don Bailey bear the burdens of the sopho- more party and elected Tom Bea as vice-president. This time Caro- line and Lewis traded jobs as he became secretary and she took over the money matters. More recently, jerry Baugh presided over our junior class, assisted by vice-president Don Basler, secretary Paddy Richter and treasurer Betty. Nelson. Their job was a little harder than that of their predeg cessors, because they had the duty of running our first talent day and prom. 12 Martha Wilson, who is active through- out school, kept the records for our senior class. Martha has received Scholarship B, Scarlet and Gray and Committee of One and is a member of the Na- tional Honor Society. She has also been an active member of the Student Council. At all the athletic events, Martha could be seen leading the yells. As a senior, she was crowned football queen and was a football queen at- tendent in her junior year. Her home- room selected her to be ilower girl at Commencement last year. Martha was a member of a quartet which participated in hoth junior Talent Day and Senior Talent Day and she was also talent selecting committee chairman for Senior Talent Day. William Schmidt, a member of Her- man Keller's homeroom, served as vice-president of the 1951 graduating class. Bill has been a recipient of Scar- let and Cray, Committee of One, and Scholarship B. He was made a member of the National Honor Society in his senior year. Bill spent most of his time practicing and playing base- ball. He eamed his varsity letter as second baseman. A varsity letter was also awarded him in tennis. He takes an active part in the Methodist Youth Federation of his church of which he is President. He also works in the district and sub- district federation. , s 'gs i y 1 WILLIAM AGNEW - Aggie . . . Me- chanic Arts . . . Committee of One . . . Scarlet and Grny . . . Black and Gray . . . During the past four years we learned that our nation has grown and we have grown with it - studying its government -its history, and its future. XVhen we enrolled as freshmen we leamed the past of the world and its changes through the years. In our junior and senior years, United States his- tory and present day govemment informed us of the political history of the United States, and our democracy and growth in the political field. Through these three years of social studies we leamed a broader view of govemment, democracy, and history. And to think this wasn't required! Tongue-tied and scared to death, we stuttered out our lirst book reports and speeches as freshmen. VVe took a required grammar and literature course in each of our freshman and sophomore years. years we could branch out into elective courses taking Biblical Literature. WVe took our advanced grammar in written expression and in advanced composition we griped about and burned the midnight oil on these infemal term papers. In our upper class English, American or From the first freshman upstart to the last graduating senior, all of us had the same task of homework pains and strains. Remember how we felt when we saw Bosse for the first time? Everything seemed big and mixed up, the halls and rooms all looked alike. As the first grueling weeks passed and we had our locker combinations down pat, Bosse seemed more a part of us and our everyday life. Some of us leave Bosse as exceptional students, musicians or ath- letes. No matter what talents we have been gifted with, most of the credit goes to the teaching, coaching and guidance we have received here. Two plus two equals five and . . . After struggling through the x plus y's for four years, we'll never forget our math classes. During our freshman year algebra was the course with its x's and y's that most of us were able to pass without too many F's. The second year we took plane geometry with its possiums and theorums. Our next courses were solid geometry, algebra III and advanced math. We all took a senior review math test to determine if we needed a brush-up course in grade school arithmetic. Take a letter Miss Secretaryl Future secretaries and business minded students, often confused with private- secretaries-in-the-making, were the students who took a commercial course. During the first year, a general study of 'business showed us the necessity of neatness and accuracy. In our sophomore year we tediously added long columns of figures and checked accounts. Many of us took valuable courses in typing and shorthand even though we werenit on the business course. 26 1 i X ., H x . get - . 1, - -.Sl ., t i f fi fi 'i e , f x i ,,,. Under the guidance of Larry Johnston, the band played in rain, snow and cold during the football season and presented concerts of high quality for many a receptive audience. The tricky bank fomiations were fun to watch and those smart and snappy marches were always tops in the city to us. The band also made pep assemblies peppier and the whole year smoother for everyone. our music, art departments boasted jameses, rembmnts Although some fooled around in art class and many had no artistic talent, the art department ended another year with empty paint bottles and wom out brushes. It was a successful year in the department - a year of poster prizes, school service, art contests and Beauty Booster activity. Many Bosse Rembrnnts came home with awards and even more contributed with peppy fight signs for our games and assemblies. Headed by Merrill Snethen and Emily Combs, our art department was an important part of many during our four years at Bosse. Sometimes we rehearsed for hours and hours for our next production but we loved it. ' Both Charles Hom and Richard Hyatt made us practice imtil we were dead tired but they gave us orchids where orchids were due. Mr. Hyatt replaced Mr. Hom as choir director and led us through two operettas. The first was a modernistic production called The Second Hurricane and the second was the tuncful The Headless Horseman which was based on a Dutch legend. Some of us as juniors remember the trip to St. Louis to see the current opera. Others remember the programs we gave in assemblies, churches and to clubs and our parts in both the Christmas pageant and the Easter program. 27 Under the direction of Larry L. Johnson, instructor, members of the orchestra completed another year of music concerts and appearances. The fifty-four members of the or- chestra presented on May 8 their an- nual spring festival, A Nite With Music. They played for the National Honor Society program on the some day. In the fall some of the members in the All City Band and Orchestra toured part of Tennessee. Concerts were also given for grade school children at Dexter and Harper. aojecit fmaaecf infea ' , Q . ed, cleans affaffdecl iam This is WBHS, broadcasting from . . . We were the ones that initated Bosse's first intra-school broadcasting system with all its headaches and broadcasting power of fifty watts. We improved on the egg room and put real programs on the air. We listened as Mr. Celnnia instructed us in the fine points of radio announcing and some of us finngled Lookout, the cookies are burning! How can we ever forget the beautiful kitchens that were completed iust in time for use to use? The messes we made, and the things that t1u'ned out to be edible will be remembered by us for a long time to come. 4 iobs at local stations. Hut, two, three, four . . . During our daily gym classes, we built up our muscles and our appetites. W'e marched, did those back breaking pushups and played ferocious games of tag football. We'll always remember those cold windy days we ran laps around Enlow Field. Ouch, I stuck my fingerl As we got used to the pinpricks we went to work on our pajamas, and dresses. We had a style show to exhibit the things we had made the year and realized that we had u lot to leam. OK boys, lock em up! ' Not only were we the first ones to use the new matrix machine, but we also became used to seeing girls in our midst. For the first time in the history of Bosse girls were allowed to take printing courses. Long will we remember our beloved Mr. Bert and the bothersome, hard-to-remove printers ink! 28 aprons during fl Senior Edition was a big job, but it was fun, too! Under the direction of Carol Schlamp, the problem of meeting that deadline and getting headlines written was faced with determination and plenty of pencils and paper. Tom Rea and Sylvan Weingarten headed the advertising crew. Leam- ing the business for next year was Helen Otto. Doris Schoene and Jane Allen helped Carol with the planning and writing. they slaved long hours publishing latest news Ads, ads, and more ads. The Business Staff nursed many a blisterecl foot and sore throat while traveling all over town getting ads for THE SCHOOL SPIRIT and the Senior Edition. Without these important ads, which consist of only one of the stalf's many jobs, it would be impossible to pay for the publication of the paper. The award is presented for superior attitudes and ability in the sport and the winner is selected by his teammates, the Kiwanians' and David Dudley, principal. Last year's winner was Bob Barton. At the end of the 1950 football season, the Bosse football team and students can look back and be proud of the best season here on the East Side for many years. The Bulldogs ,lit the fuse of this great season with a win over the tough Princeton Tigers at Princeton, 13-0. Jerry Huston and Don Bailey led the attack for the 'Dogs in this one. The gridders fanned the flame a little by coming from behind to edge Boonville, 21-14. The Bulldogs trailed once in the contest 14-0, but put on a second half splurge that carried them to victory. The buming fuse began to sputter when the Graham Crackers traveled to Louisville and lost to a burly Manual aggregation, 12-0. The loss was no disgrace since the Bulldogs played one of their best games against one of Kentucky's best teams. The fire really got low when the gridders got ofl to a had start and lostito the Reitz Panthers, 20-7. The Bull- dogs outplayed the I-Iilltoppers in every department ex- cept the score. The flame began to brighten again though as thc 'Dogs ran roughshod over Bloomington, 26-6 at En- low Field. The flame grew stronger and the fuse grew shorter as the gridders rolled up a tremendous score in routing Mater Dei, 40-6 with the reserves playing most of the game. The second city contest of the season brought the Bulldogs against Central and Bosse was the victor in the rain, 13-0. The next contest was at Owensboro, and the gridders rolled up their biggest score of the season by winning, 41-6. The flame was burning bright now and the fuse was short. The whole thing finally exploded as the Bosse Bull- dogs buried the Memorial Tigers on a snow covered Thanksgiving day, 21-0 to end the glorious season. 32 Bosse in 1948 as head football coach, guided this year's Bulldog grid team to their best record since 1931. In hishigh school days at Bosse Mr. Graham starred not only in foot- ball, but in baseball and basketball as well. After graduating from the east side school in 1940, he played football for Penn State and George VVashington University where he re- ceived recognition in the East for his gridiron play. The successful rec- ord of the Bulldog gridsters at the end of the season stood at seven wins and two losses. our baslzetteers lost sectional crown to panthers HERMAN KELLER, head basketball coach, came to Bosse from Boonville, Indiana in 1941. Four hundred and forty-nine strong, we entered as freshman in 1947. We were scared at first and felt lost, but, after we elected our first officers and had become acquainted at our freshman square dance, we felt better. Adding our contribution to the twice yearly beauty courts we had Martha Day and Rita Stuart as attendants to the football queen, Fleta Benedict, and Doris Schoene and Joy Catron attendants to the basketball queen, Joyce Glover. Erminie, a light opera, was produced by the local department, a Music Festivalv and a Pop,' concert by the orchestra, and Pride and Prejudice and Death Takes a Holidayl' were dramatized by the Thespian department. As yet our Barrymore talent had not developed and we were still hiding our light under a barrel. This was the year that, instead of joining clubs, we all spent our ThLu'sdays in freshman assemblies. This made most of us glad when our sophomore year came with a few new privileges. In the sophomore year Martha Day and Jean Morgan were elect- ed by the class to attend football queen, Lois Hon, and Doris Schoene and joy Catron again served as basketball attendants-this time to Barbara Jeffries. A The music department combined to present an Extravaganza, which was just that. For the first time members of our class added their bit to drama with parts in The Man Who Came To Dinner and You Can't Take It VVith You. The third Thespian production of the year was Angel Street. In the junior year Doris Schoene and jean Morgan were attendents to the basketball queen while Jean and Martha Wilson shared the honors for football queen. Doris was also the first in our class to become a yell leader. We had our first prom, Candlelight Ball. George Fountain's orchestra played for us while we danced in a blue and gold Com- mtuiity Room. lean Morgan and Bill Miller were crowned king and 53 Bosse got a brand new principal The auditorium ceiling fell in Evansville dem near burned down It snowed . . . and snowed ......andsnowed Senior Prom was Vaudevision packed the house Mrs. Gregory and Mr. Keller were our sponsors Our football team placed second in city WBHS went on the air Our track and tennis teams won city We had a May Queen queen. Jerry Baugh se1'ved as general chairman of our junior Talent Day, which had a campaign tour as its theme. This year we all learned to drive, after a fashion, through our health and safety classes and we chose our school rings. Beggar on Horseback and Smilin' Through were these semester's drama productions. In our senior year Martha lfVilson was football queen with joy Catron as maid-of-honor and lean Morgan was basketball queen with Shirley Balding serving her as maid-of-honor. Reviving an old custom Doris Schoene was crowned May Queen by Dean Johnston in the spring. Martha Wilson, Doris Schoene and Corky Ashby made up the senior part of the crew that led us in yells. Caroline Lukens and Sharon Hurst each served one semester as editor of The School Spirit and three of oiu' members headed the Student Council. They were Iim Welborn, presidentg Bob Coleman, vice-presidentg and Doris Schoene, secretary. At Evansville College Union Buildings' Great Hall we whirled and swirled to the notes of Bobbie Barrett at The Senior Prom. Bill Gilmore and Patty Slyker were Chosen to reign as King and queen of the dance. We posed, movie-like, mid-year for our senior pictures and spent a lot of time ordering calling cards, commencement invitations and getting measured for caps and gowns. Our class performed in Vaudevision , senior talent day, to an over-filled house. The Headless Horseman, an operetta presented by the choral department, starred one of our members, Delores Schmidt. We also had our parts in the plays Arsenic and Old Lace and The Wins- low Boy. Our last week of school was a busy one with the senior picnic, reception, class day, baccalaureate services and the Commencement dance at the Armory. We will always remember the day when we hesitantly walked across the platform feeling stiff in our caps and gowns, shook hands with the principal and walked off with-our graduation diploma. mx T4 l V Will ll Wil i T-A um is ll ll M1 l '+ A A ,C lu, LW, WHA T I-IFE-'A fl? ll A ll l ' NOT DEATH E 'Q, A T fs M r. twain l ,alll A 'lll i ,lglfgiiri lil l T l '. We are sad because here we grew up. We en- tered Bosse as childreng we leave as adults. Here we attended our first prom and cheered in our first pep assembly. Now we have seen our last of these. Even the endless lessons are about over. But though we are sad, we are proud too, proud of the lessons we learned, the count We scored, the records we broke and of the strong bonds of our friendship. Our chapter in Bosse's history is one of athletic achievement, scholastic awards and artistic en- deavour. W'e think it is a good chapter. It was not written by any one of us but by the trials and triumphs of us all. Yes, we have given Bosse much in the past and she in return has given us our future. VVe face it now, as the door closes behind us, with courage :rod high hope. 55 11f!L.de41e41f 7 59243. gmdzwia tjrgkrraf' SWRTS - - SLACKS FRANK A.
