RED KNIGHTS DISPLAY SCHOOL SPIRIT Benilde's 1959 homecoming erased all doubts as to whether the students of Benilde High School were fully capable of showing intense school spirit. The eager and energetic attitude of the students was never more apparent than it was during the first two weeks of November, 1959. Preparations for the homecoming had long been in the making. Several weeks before the game, some of the upperclassmen had begun construction on floats for the gala homecoming parade. On a cold and snowy Sunday afternoon, activities began os a colorful parade of two hundred cars proceeded from Benilde to Marshall High Field, where four thousand people witnessed an inspired team of Red Knights defeat a determined team of Islanoers. In the final minutes of the game, the Red Knights, on a spectacu ar run by Joe Hartle. scored a final touchdown which tied the game. A well-placed kick gave Benilde its most desired v.ctory by the slender margin of 20-19. , ,. No sooner had the victory been won than prepara 1 . , begun for the homecoming dance.
