BENILDEN Page 1 3 y4,n 3he '1(4 y, 47 4 3ruth, 4nJ Ohe JZifc jfohn, 14:6 HIS HOLINESS, POPE JOHN XXIII Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. a farmer's son, has already won the affection of the entire world. Besides being dramatic, his humility and intense sense of brotherhood and understanding make him an ideal Pontiff in ihis age of materialism. Visiting prisons and taking his meals with friends are all a part of his daily routine and serve to illustrate his warm and human personality. John XXIII is a veteran in the administrative service of the Church. Patterning his life after the ideals taught by Christ, the Holy Father devotes his unceasing prayers and efforts in promoting truth, unity and peace. We welcome our new Vicar of Christ and pray for success in all his aspirations. DEDICATION As students at Benilde we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our director, Brother J. Mark, F.S.C. Brother first became active in the Christian Brotherhood upon entering the Junior Novitate at Glencoe in February, 1932. Soon after his graduation in 1934. he received his habit. During the ensuing years, until 1956. he studied, taught, and directed in many different schools. We are very fortunate to have this dedicated man js the organizer of our school. Brother Mark has recently completed twenty-five years of dedicated service. A large portion of this service can be seen in the remarkable developments made at Benilde under his able guidance. Brother Mark is an admirable example of a Christian Brother. He is a fine teacher, an educational philosopher, and a molder of men. Brother is a consecrated'' educator of Christian youth, a specialist in the training of young men. We are very glad that he has passed this glorious milestone in his career, the same year that we pass a milestone in the history of Benilde. the first graduating class to attend Benilde all through nigh school. We congratulate Brother Mark. We hope he has many more years in his profession of serving God through serving young men. Among the qualifications that we hope to find in men are those of generosity, loyalty, cooperation and an attitude of understanding towards others. Their value assumes a new and deeper significance to those who find it possible to participate in extra-curricular activities in which they must give of their time and efforts while working with others towards a desired goal. Brother Leo Raymond DEDICATION The senior class of Benilde also dedicates the I960 Benilden to Brother Leo Raymond, who. this year, celebrated his twenty-fifth anniversary as a Christian Brother. After receiving his bachelor of science degree from St. Mary's College in 1938. Brother has taught chemistry, physics, and higher mathematics. He has taught in many cities of the Midwest, including St. Louis. Duluth, and Minneapolis. Brother Leo Raymond's ability to enliven his classes with a quick and appropriate pun makes him well liked by the student body. A licensed amateur radio operator, he enjoys working with electronic equipment and is frequently occupied with the task of keeping the school's electric apparatus in good working order. The sport which Brother most enjoys is golf. As coach of Benilde’s golf team, lie is a proficient teacher of this ever-growing sport. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Brother Leo Raymond for the twenty-five years of his life which he has so willingly given to the education of Catholic youth. We wish him continued success in his life's work. LCONAUG . . . tat Wd« $ qam Oe , otv MagniV c«n array of nobiVtty Viirtinq roya ty Princouos on paraci« FESTIVITIES Tho gang's all here. Homecoming Quoon — Colleen Murray RED KNIGHTS DISPLAY SCHOOL SPIRIT Benilde's 1959 homecoming erased all doubts as to whether the students of Benilde High School were fully capable of showing intense school spirit. The eager and energetic attitude of the students was never more apparent than it was during the first two weeks of November, 1959. Preparations for the homecoming had long been in the making. Several weeks before the game, some of the upperclassmen had begun construction on floats for the gala homecoming parade. On a cold and snowy Sunday afternoon, activities began os a colorful parade of two hundred cars proceeded from Benilde to Marshall High Field, where four thousand people witnessed an inspired team of Red Knights defeat a determined team of Islanoers. In the final minutes of the game, the Red Knights, on a spectacu ar run by Joe Hartle. scored a final touchdown which tied the game. A well-placed kick gave Benilde its most desired v.ctory by the slender margin of 20-19. , ,._____ No sooner had the victory been won than prepara 1 . , begun for the homecoming dance. As the dance came to a' cos • brilliant display or that this homecoming had been Bern e school spirit. Pacje 10 BENILDE PERSONIFIES SCHOOL SPIRIT In the fall of 1956, a disorganized throng of boys from the Twin Cities and the suburban area entered a half-finished, ultramodern school building located on Highway 100 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. At this time in an atmosphere of sacrifice and constructive labor, school spirit was born at Benilde. Under the patient direction of the Christian Brothers, students willingly contributed their time and effort to the great task before them. All in all. despite many obstacles — tedious homeworks, personality conflicts, blue Mondays — the students met the challenge by developing an enthusiastic school spirit. Through competitive sports, fund raising drives, and student example. Benilde has dramatically captured the attention of the Twin Cities. In brief, we have, by means of a terrific spirit, made our school known. This spirit has successfully evolved into an intense force which reached its climax during the week of homecoming activities. No one will forget the magnificent parade to Marshall Field and the chilling excitement of the afternoon's victory. The attendance of hundreds at the homecoming dance proved a festive end to the week-long exhibition of school spirit, the culmination of four years' effort. Class rings — lifetime mementos of school spirit ACTION Harlan Thom sounds off. MOTIVATION . . Wan cannot livo by breed alone. World's finest salesmen THE RED KNIGHT'S STORY t Throughout the preceding and following pages, the reader will see me in various poses and predicaments. My function will be to provide a little humor and amusement. My most important function, how-ever, will be to symbolize the modern era of the Red Knights. I represent the ideal Benilde student, for I am always optimistic and happy, and I take an active part in the activities that go on around the school. I work hard to get the grades I get. On the wall is a picture of my ancestor who was the flower of knighthood in his bygone era. In a comparison between us, you would find us both seeking and finding excellence in roughly the same areas. His excellence was judged by the rigid standard of the code of chivalry. My degree of excellence is harder to judge and define. In short, you will find that I am devoted to God, which is shown by a conscientious practice of my faith. I am devoted to my fellowmen, which is shown by my school spirit. My being true to myself is shown by a living of my principles. As the reader can see, even if the dates and garments have changed since the era of my ancestor, the internal quest to better myself for God has remained unchanged. Page 14 ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF BROTHER L. DOMINIC, ASSISTANT PRINCIP Brother Dominic has many duties as Assistant Principal. His work starts long before our school year begins. While the students are basking in the sun, Brother is preparing their schedules for the school year. His numerous duties include making out teachers' schedules, arranging scholarships and preparing all student records. He is dedicated to his task of counseling and guiding the students through difficult years, with the aim of turning out graduates of high moral principles and good academic ratings. The student body is grateful to Brother L. Dominic, who takes a great part in making Benilde the type of school that we will always be proud to call our alma mater. Pago 16 MORAL GUIDANCE FATHER KNAPP Father Knapp is well known to all as our spiritual counselor. A Jesuit priest, he came to Benilde only two years ago. In this short time, he has shown himself to be a friend to all students. The 1959 retreat, which he conducted for the juniors and seniors, was merely another example of the invaluable spiritual aid he has given to Benilde students. The '60 Benilden salutes Father Knapp and hopes that God will assist him in his future endeavors. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT BROTHER LOUIS Brother Louis, who was assigned as business manager during the first semester, is familiar to all Benilde students. A former St. Paulite, he credits his vocation to his two uncles, Brothers Louis Gerard and Alphonsus, both Christian Brothers. At St. Mary's College, his alma mater, he took courses in accounting and automotive mechanics while acting as the bus driver. He finds that a brother's life never has a dull moment. As Benilde's business manager, he has a vast amount of work to do: collecting tuition, entering debts and assets in the ledgers, and paying bills. Spectator sports rank high among his favorite recreations. Pago 17 FACULTY Brother Joel, F.S.C. World History Librarian Basketball Moderator Mr. Mike Karbo Head Football Coach Physical Education Head Basketball Coach The faculty members pictured on this page are known to all the students. Since they do not have homerooms, they are blessed with other tasks which bring them into contact with all the Benilde scholars. The library, office, and athletic department are their fields of operation. They have given up the privilege ot guiding an advisory in order to help the school carry out its day-to-day existence. It is service like this that makes Benilde the school that it is today. Without their help, the full development of the students — mentally, morally, and physically — would not be effected. Although sophomores are often characterized as wise fools, rare is the man who at one time or another was not deserving of this description. Despite the distractions in his life, the typical sophomore begins to look beyond his everyday existence to more important things and begins preparing for his future. A distinguished record may be claimed by Benilde's sophomore class of 59 and '60. Few tenth grade classes can boast of more enthusiastic school spirit. Sophomore support of school activities has been terrific, as is shown by their attendance at games and by their generous participation in school projects. Despite wide extra-curricular interests, in general the sophomore class has maintained a high scholastic average. Things may have been tough at times, but any goal worth reaching is likely to entail hard work. The sophomores have proved their potential by providing a strong foundation for success in later life. The challenge of the future is theirs to meet and accept. This day marks the long-awaited completion of four years of hard work and of participation in truly worthwhile projects. But aside from being a reminder of the past, our graduation is primarily a prelude to the future. The years we have spent at Benilde have contributed a great deal to our social and moral development, as well as to our intellectual growth. Extra-curricular activities have helped us learn the meaning of responsibility and the practical wisdom of our classroom advisors has contributed greatly to our understanding of Christian morals, as applied to daily living. The friendships which we formed will last a lifetime. This continuation of high school friendships is the perpetuation of the school spirit which has become an integral part of our lives. Now we prepare to take our place in the world, whether it be in college, a trade or the armed services. We will never forget that we are alumni of Benilde despite the new loyalties we form. In future years, the reputation which we make for ourselves will become the reputation of Benilde future students. This is a responsibility we gladly accept as loyal and appreciative alumni of Benilde. Room 136 Brother Theodore. F.S.C. Religion IV Chemistry Activities Chemistry Club How do we know, class? SCHOOL LIFE The following pages depict some of the more interesting aspects of everyday life at Benilde. To most of us, school life is a combination of hard work and recreation. This combination forms the basis for everything we do in school, whether it be studying for a semester exam or attending a basketball game. Our day at Benilde begins with prayer, which is an integral part of our school life. In the classroom, daily quizzes and class discussions are the order of the day—a process which undoubtedly makes us more mentally alert. With the ringing of the dismissal bell, a disorderly procession of Red Knights winds its way through the halls to the parking lot, where the roar of exhausts and the screeching of tires are a welcome change from the relative peace and quiet of the classroom. Every loyal Benilde student is an ardent follower and supporter of his school teams. Such is the life of a Benilde Red Knight—a life which I shall never forget. MANUAL LABOR ''Left have ess oratory and more labor. SPRING MADNESS It went Out Fore! Not in here Brother.' Few high schools can boast of a program of extracurricular activities which is as comprehensive as that of Benilde. At Benilde every student is encouraged to develop all his mental and physical abilities through participation in as many activities as possible. The Red Knights of Benilde have made an outstanding record for themselves, not only in scholastic achievement but also in extracurricular accomplishment. Benilde offers an almost unlimited number of non-athletic activities, ranging from the Lancer, Benilde's official school paper, to the Drama Club and the Debate Team. School spirit, as evidenced through activities, was never more apparent than in the recent chocolate drive. The determined Red Knights literally swept over Minneapolis and the suburban areas, selling well over the school's quota of chocolate bars. Activities such as these are a vivid proof of school spirit in action. We are grateful to the students who have spent an endless amount of time working at their chosen activities. It is these students, who are willing to give up their time, who will give Benilde a name known throughout the city. To them this section is dedicated. The desire to make Beniide a birthplace of high Christian ideals is the ambition of many Catholic mothers and fathers. To help accomplish this end. the Beniide Mothers' Club and the Fathers Club were established. These two organizations have done more to make Beniide a successful venture than is realized by the students, for whom this effort has been spent. The projects sponsored by the mothers and fathers have enabled Beniide to provide a better education for the young mfen who attend. Our gratitude to these wonderful mothers and fathers must seem insignificant compared to the great work they have done. Their unselfish effort in achieving their goals is deserving of a reward: however, their only satisfaction is the realization that their work at Beniide will always be remembered on earth and in heaven. White collar workers In a year marked with epoch-making events, Benilde took a long stride on its way to becoming one of the greats among high schools. One step in this process was the initiation of the school paper, the Lancer. Under the tutelage of Mr. R. J. Eddy's guiding hand, the members of the staff have transformed a mere stack of paper into entertaining and thought-provoking literature. With amazing rapidity the paper got underway as the editors gained experience with time. Congratulations to these young men on a Job well done. Reporter! Left to riqht (Kneeling}: John Roers. Propagation of the Faith One of the most worthwhile endeavors which the Christian Brothers' schools participate in is the collection of money within the school to alleviate the burden of poverty which hinders the missionary work in countries such as Nicaragua and the Philippines. As a contributor to this cause. Benilde ranked among the very highest of all the Christian Brothers' schools in the United States. Senior Room 136 has established a tradition of its own in mission donations by setting a record for a single Christmas collection with a total contribution in excess of $130. This striking example of self-sacrifice on the part of the students is a typical illustration of the generosity of the entire student body in making these mission collections as successful as they have been. jDenilite jRifih School ★ Mission (Danner Atrarh'A' £ ii _§ £ Si Chemistry Club Lott to right: Mike Svendsen. Although it is an activity requiring diligent work from early in August until the end of February, this time is certainly not wasted. Among the advantages of debating are the ability to think, speak and organize thoughts. These talents will prove themselves useful in later life. By holding fifth place in the state, the Red Knight debaters have given Benilde a name to be reckoned with in debate circles. Only those who really excel in all of these four fields are considered worthy to be members of this organization. Thus, a 'B’' average and numerous extra-curricular activities are the minimum requisites for an individual even to be eligible for election. The season was highlighted by a 20-19 squeaker over De La Salle, providing a fitting climax to a most successful season. Although Mr. Karbo's squad will lose the services of eleven seniors, the Red Knights can anticipate a most interesting season in I960. This achievement came as the result of a sensational 43-42 victory by the Red Knights over their traditional rivals, the Islanders. By securing for themselves the Region IV Championship, the Red Knights gained the opportunity to participate in the State Catholic Basketball Tournament, during which Benilde took consolation honors. Benilde's overall record was better than many had hoped for. This year's reserve strength of sophomores and juniors promises to be a sturdy foundation for an outstanding varsity squad in 1960-61.
