CHRISTIAN Our late pope, Pius XII, was a man whose memory will never be erased from the hearts of men. Millions of people all over the world loved him: others held him in deep respect. Like all great popes, he was devoted to the people and their problems. He thought a great deal of the youth ot the world and showed his interest in them by his many writings on youth and modern education. In these messages Pius XII gave us the Christian ideal of education. We at Benilde feel that we are a practical part of this ideal, for we try to guide ourselves by these messages. Pope Pius XII felt that education depended to a great extent upon the teachers. He said: Good teachers . . . should have perfect formation, intellectual and moral. For the teaching office is a lofty position which calls for intellectual discernment and for goodness of heart, for a capacity for intuition and delicacy of spirit, for adaptability and adjustment as well as human depth capable of bearing all for love of neighbor . . . We don't have to go far to find teachers of this caliber, for we have them here at Benilde in the Christian Brothers. We have come to know, honor, and love these men who have dedicated their lives to God and to the Christian education of boys throughout the world. His Holiness went further, saying: Good teachers . . . are careful to educate rather than merely to instruct; capable, above all, of forming and of moulding souls chiefly through contact with their own . . . Anyone having the privilege of coming in contact with the Brothers soon sees the genuine interest which they have for all boys and the true desire to make them more like Christ through their teachings and good example. Pius also noted the undue attention accorded material goals in education and offered a solution: To the exaggerated importance that is accorded today to whatever is purely technical and material, reply with an education which always gives first place to spiritual and moral values: both to the natural and. above all. to the supernatural ones . . . Each day at Benilde starts out with prayer, which is carried on through the day. Our morning prayer is followed by a religion lesson which teaches the principles which will guide us through our lives. Pope Pius warned of one of the greatest dangers to education when he wrote: The first would be the undue influence of the state, which, going beyond its powers, would presume to impose on education, for political or ideological ends, the specious unity of an arbitrary philosophy. The students of Benilde are protected from this worldly influence to a great extent because we attend a school like Benilde, where we are taught only that which coincides with God’s law. Pope Pius XII challenged youth with these words: Your task ... is to store the mind with knowledge, to examine knowledge acquired, to extend it, to advance the learning which is in your own particular sphere . . . Thus it will be digested by them and what is of first importance, it will be nourishment and enlightenment to their spirit. Will we accept the challenge? aEii i li C H R I Page 6
