Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1959 volume:

The first senior class of Benilde presents the ’59 BENILDEN Page 1 POPE PIUS XII KdJl fij I It is time to broaden the students' views, beyond a world obstructed by factions, jealous one of the other, by extreme nationalism . . . because of which the present generation has suffered so much. In sincere appreciation of his personal devotion to all mankind, we. the students of Benilde High School, respectfully dedicate our first yearbook to our late Holy Father, His Holiness Pope Pius XII. It is our firm belief that this small honor is given, not to a mere man, but to a true Saint of God. . . . What deep and rich potentialities for love, goodness and devotion lie dormant in the heart of a child .. ” (Pope Pius XII) One of our late Holy Father's special interests was the Christian education of Catholic youth. He poured a great-deal of time and effort into His teaching on this problem. One of the most saintly persons to hold the title. Vicar of Christ , Pope Pius XII shed great light on the true Christian ideals of education. We can be sure that our schools, built during his reign, have received blessing upon blessing through our late, very Holy Father. CHRISTIAN Our late pope, Pius XII, was a man whose memory will never be erased from the hearts of men. Millions of people all over the world loved him: others held him in deep respect. Like all great popes, he was devoted to the people and their problems. He thought a great deal of the youth ot the world and showed his interest in them by his many writings on youth and modern education. In these messages Pius XII gave us the Christian ideal of education. We at Benilde feel that we are a practical part of this ideal, for we try to guide ourselves by these messages. Pope Pius XII felt that education depended to a great extent upon the teachers. He said: Good teachers . . . should have perfect formation, intellectual and moral. For the teaching office is a lofty position which calls for intellectual discernment and for goodness of heart, for a capacity for intuition and delicacy of spirit, for adaptability and adjustment as well as human depth capable of bearing all for love of neighbor . . . We don't have to go far to find teachers of this caliber, for we have them here at Benilde in the Christian Brothers. We have come to know, honor, and love these men who have dedicated their lives to God and to the Christian education of boys throughout the world. His Holiness went further, saying: Good teachers . . . are careful to educate rather than merely to instruct; capable, above all, of forming and of moulding souls chiefly through contact with their own . . . Anyone having the privilege of coming in contact with the Brothers soon sees the genuine interest which they have for all boys and the true desire to make them more like Christ through their teachings and good example. Pius also noted the undue attention accorded material goals in education and offered a solution: To the exaggerated importance that is accorded today to whatever is purely technical and material, reply with an education which always gives first place to spiritual and moral values: both to the natural and. above all. to the supernatural ones . . . Each day at Benilde starts out with prayer, which is carried on through the day. Our morning prayer is followed by a religion lesson which teaches the principles which will guide us through our lives. Pope Pius warned of one of the greatest dangers to education when he wrote: The first would be the undue influence of the state, which, going beyond its powers, would presume to impose on education, for political or ideological ends, the specious unity of an arbitrary philosophy. The students of Benilde are protected from this worldly influence to a great extent because we attend a school like Benilde, where we are taught only that which coincides with God’s law. Pope Pius XII challenged youth with these words: Your task ... is to store the mind with knowledge, to examine knowledge acquired, to extend it, to advance the learning which is in your own particular sphere . . . Thus it will be digested by them and what is of first importance, it will be nourishment and enlightenment to their spirit. Will we accept the challenge? aEii i li C H R I Page 6 IDEALS REALIZED AT BENILDE Pago 7 MOST REVEREND WILLIAM O. BRADY. D.D.. S.T.D. Archbishop of St. Paul His Excellency, the Most Reverend William O. Brady. Archbishop of St. Paul, is a man whom all Catholic high school students revere as a true champion of Catholic education. His ten million dollar program for secondary schools is opening the door of Catholic education to thousands who would otherwise have been denied this privilege. Page 8 MOST REVEREND LEONARD P. COWLEY. D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul His Excellency the Most Reverend Leonard P. Cowley, is the Auxiliary Bishop of the St. Paul Archdiocese. As the first resident bishop of Minneapolis, he brings to this office the warm and friendly qualities which have characterized him as the pastor of St. Olaf’s church. BLESSED BROTHER BENILDE Our school, whose patron is Blessed Brother Benilde, is now training the Catholic young men of suburban Minneapolis in the Christian tradition that he himself observed. But who is this man? His relative obscurity outside of the Christian Brothers’ schools is an effect of his very greatness. One of his greatest virtues was an heroic, yet unspectacular observance of his rule. Because of this quiet, saintly virtue, Brother Benilde ranks in a class with Theresa, the Little Flower of Jesus. Brother's virtue also had a very tangible quality. About three hundred vocations to the priesthood and the religious life are attributed to his influence. A retiring person by disposition, Brother Benilde developed the ability to influence others by the example of his own simple, dedicated life. In leading others to God, he achieved eminent sanctity for himself. It was only logical, then, when a new Catholic school was built in a Minneapolis suburb, that recently beatified Brother Benilde should become its patron. Pag© 10 BENILDE, FROM VISION TO VICTORY It was in early 1952 that the pressing need for a new Catholic boy’s high school in the Minneapolis area became apparent to Brother J. Marie, then the Director of De La Salle High School. Brother Marie’s vision began to take shape through a number of organizational conferences with zealous laymen who recognized the serious situation. There had been previous efforts to found such a school, but these had ended in failure, mainly because there were not enough teachers available to staff a new school. In spite of an even greater need by 1952. it was touch and go whether a new school could be built in the face of such a critical shortage of teachers. Finally, after obtaining the late Archbishop Murray's permission and financial support — if teachers could be found — Brother I. Philip. Visitor of the St. Louis Province, consented to supply the new school with teachers. The first hurdle was cleared! The second, money for construction, was taken care of by a parish-to-parish Building Fund Drive, the generosity of Archbishop Murray and later, that of Archbishop Brady. With construction beginning in the winter of 1955. Benilde threw open its doors in September. 1956. to its first students, about 325 freshmen and sophomores. With the opening in the Fall of 1958 of the new senior wing, Benilde's original sophomores, now seniors, become the first graduating class of the new school. Thus Benilde begins to serve its basic purpose, preparing boys to live as Christian men. The vision of 1952 is now the victory of 1959! Page 11 THE BIG JOB - WINTER 7. ’55 TO SUMMER ’56 TAKE FORM Orderly confusion. Walls rise above the earth. A new addition to the skyline. THE BIG JOB - SUMMER The interior work begins. FINISHED ’56 TO SUMMER ’58 Nearly finished. AT LAST! BROTHER J. MARK, F.S.C, DIRECTOR The one man who is most responsible for the continuing existence of Benilde high school is our Director, Brother Mark. It was through his untiring effort that a dream became a reality. As Director of a Christian Brothers' school, Brother Mark not only is responsible for the workings of the school, but also for the spiritual, moral, and physical welfare of the entire student body. Because Brother Mark is Benilde's first Director, he has far greater responsibilities than a Director who has taken the office in a long-established school. While guiding Benilde through the first difficult years Brother Mark's leadership has promoted the school spirit and an extra measure of pride shared by both the faculty and the student body. Pago 16 BROTHER L. DOMINIC ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Brother Dominic's personal story as a Brother is closely linked with Benilde's story as a school. It was at the end of the first semester of the school's opening year that Brother Dominic was promoted to assistant principal. Since that time, he has had a major hand in developing Benilde and its first senior class. In addition to his many responsibilities as assistant principal and teacher, he is the inspiration behind the Fathers’ and Friends' Club, which is doing much to promote the growth of our school. To us the seniors the piece of metal is a ring which symbolizes to us two of the most important things in our lives at this time — our religion and our school. It is a ring which all of us will be proud to wear the rest of our days, not merely because of its appearance but because of all that it stands for in our minds. On the roll of paper are inscribed the words which make our graduation from Benilde High School official. Now we are ready to enter the world. The piece of paper is an object of pride, to be shown anywhere in future years. To us. the first graduates, this piece of metal and this roll of paper signify four years which were well spent. We hope they will hold the same symbolism for those to follow. Pago 41 Frank Spinner President SENIOR DEPARTMENT OFFICERS FRANK SPINNER Frank . . . Entered from Annunciation . . . THE FATHERS’ CLUB The Fathers’ and Friends' Club is probably the least-appreciated organization connected with Benilde: yet, it has contributed a great deal of time, effort and equipment to our fledgling school. We owe our present football field and the warming house at the hockey rink to the past efforts of our fathers. Their future plans include a football stadium and a quarter-mile track. Every student of Benilde has benefited from their generosity; it's about time for a belated thank you. Fathers' Club Chairmen Mr. John Linnihan. Program Chairman: Mr. W. R. Posoley. The Benilde production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town was enjoyed by a packed auditorium for three consecutive evenina performances. It proved to be a great success both artistically and financially. The Benilde actors and the girls from St. Margaret's and Holy Angels turned in surprisingly good performances, while the lighting, the only stage effect, was in itself a work of art. To the seniors who become members, this honor is a final reward. To the sophomore and junior members, their probationary standing serves as an incentive to continue the good work. As the first yearbook, the Benilden records the unique years of our school's qrowth to maturity. These years mark our entrance into interscholastic sports competition, the complete construction of the school and the Graduation of cur first senior class. These were important years for Benilde and its students. The problem was how to transmit these three active years onto paper. Somehow, after many months' work, everything worked out and the yearbook was finished. Whether the job was done well or not, only time can tell. The staff did its best. We sincerely hope that the readers of this book find genuine enjoyment in the finished product. Yearbook Salesmen Seated: Bill Kleifqen. Frank Boaudetto. Greq Smith. Bob Wrobln-.W. '' :OOTBALL SEASON HIGHLIGHTS The season of 1958 marked the debut of the Red Knights in the Central Catholic Conference. Over-all' Benilde fared very well in its first varsity season, especially in conference Dlay, finishing third. Led by Co-captains Mike Poseley and Bob O'Hara, the Red Knights slashed their way to a 4-4 season. Although hampered by a badly sprained wrist, suffered in the opening half-hour of practice. Poseley went on to make the Catholic All-State football team, the first football player in the history of the school to garner such an honor. The Knights warmed up for their first conference game by crush:ng Minnehaha Academy 40-0 behind the two touchdown efforts of Poseley and Sophomore Jim Ryan. A gay St. Thomas Homecoming crowd was saddened by a 21-7 defeat as the Red Knights showed that they were not to be taken lightly. Ken Fasching scored twice and Dave Hartle contributed another on an end sweep to assure the victory. Benilde's solid defense did not allow the Bellhops to score until the last 44 seconds of the game. In the most exciting game of the season. Benilde outfought Cretin all the way until the last three minutes when Cretin finally managed to score. The crucial extra point, only their second out of fourteen tries all season, split the uprights; and Benilde's championship hopes went out the window. Benilde's touchdown drive was highlighted by a 43 yard burst by Mike Poseley to set up Ken Fasching's short burst for a touchdown. Sparked by the power-running of Sophs Joe Hartle and Tom Fihgearld. the Knights sloshed their way to another victory over St. Cloud. 13-0. In the season finale, inspired by a giant student rally including a 110-car caravan, the Red Knights outplayed the Islanders for twenty-nine minutes, when De La Salle scored a come-from-behind 12-7 victory. After a scoreless first quarter, Bill Boufford smashed over from the one on fourth down. Jim, The Toe Hahn added his thirteenth point of the season. Benilde marched deep into De La Salle territory twice in the second half, only to be stopped each time by the tough Islander forward wall. Thus. Benilde finished third in conference play with a 2-2 record. All-State M i k o Poseley crashes through tackle. Poseley shows his stuff. The pass that almost beat De. The tough-luck Red Knights were only out of a conference game once in the whole season, often losing by a scant two or three points. Benilde has great hopes for the future, however, for the majority of this year's varsity squad consisted of underclassmen. The experience these freshmen, sophomores and juniors gained this season should prove very valuable.
