Here at home, groaning as the alarm went off at 3 a.m., we dragged ourselves out of bed to be video witnesses to the marriage of Charles and Lady Di. President Reagan ' s tax cuts were approved while striking Air Traffic Controllers were fired by the thousands. The end of the baseball strike carried with it the notion of split season and Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Tommy Hearns. As anti-nuclear protests in Western Europe and Soviet tanks in Eastern Europe rumbled louder, we made the summer profitable for Hol- lywood, flocking to see the likes of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, SUPERMAN II, and STRIPES. Chi- cagofest and scandal involving Car- dinal Cody ' s alleged diversion of church funds to a friend pre- ceeded our return to school, football games, and sockhops. October through December, as we turned to Homecoming, football playoffs, and Christmas Drive, the na- tion turned to AWACS sales and Mid East turmoils. For us, the Rolling Stones U.S. tour eclipsed reports of huge budget deficits facing Washing- ton. The Los Angeles Dodgers de- feated the New York Yankees in the World Series while the Federal Gov- ernment diverted our attention with rumors of elusive Libyan hit squads. Ronald Reagan talked of winning limited nuclear war and attended the International Summit at Cancun on Third World Poverty. Wayne Wil- liams went on trial for the Atlanta murders, and Richard Allen, Presi- dent Reagan ' s National Security Advisor resigned over scandals in- volving his acceptance of gifts . In contrast to ON GOLDEN POND we pictured the honors of General Jaruzelski ' s martial law in Poland.
