ORGANIZATIONS ... 60 1 • kl iff ACTIVITIES ... 94 FACULTY ... 116 PEOPLE 132 Last winter, January through March 1981, remember Midterm, turn- about, basketball playoffs? But also recall Ronald Reagan ' s inauguration and the nation decorated with yellow ribbons as we welcomed the Amer- ican hostages home from their Ira- nian ordeal. While the class of ' 82 sweated SAT ' s and ACT ' s, the world gave us a nightmare of killings in Atlanta, the trial of Mao Tse Tung ' s widow and the gang of four, and Ruth Love as Chicago ' s new school super- intendent. Superbowl XV pitted the Philadelphia Eagles against the Oak- land Raiders, Britain ' s Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Diana Spencer, and Walter Cronkite told us the way it was for the last time. A winter of budget cuts, Reagan Red, El Salvador and a new TV show Hill Street Blues was chased by loyal fans through prime-time-slotland. April through June baseball, boys ' tennis, and track seasons, the 50 ' s sockhop, graduation parties, final ex- ams filled our thoughts while Jane Byrne moved from the Gold Coast to Cabrini Green. A nation, horrified by a troubled young man ' s attempt on the President ' s life, increased pro- tests for and against handgun control. Finishing homework during commer- cials, we saw Oscars awarded to Sis- sy Spacek, Robert DeNiro, and the film ORDINARY PEOPLE, and got up early to see Space Shuttle Co- lumbia launched. Adding fuel to the handgun fire was the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. It ' s like shooting God was the stunned global reaction. As France ' s national elections brought Socialist Francois Mitterand to power, Bobby Sands and other hunger strikers made their supreme sacrifice for patriotism. A White Sox winning streak ended with a baseball strike and CTA RTA prob- lems kept us off the trains downtown as public transportation prices soared. Defense buildups and tax cuts captured the nation ' s attention when the President ' s bickering advi- sors didn ' t. Joe Louis ' death was mourned and Israel ' s increasing bel- ligerence caused anxiety. July through September, the sum : mer of ' 8 1 . While we relished our re- lease, manned summer jobs, and de- voted free hours to heavy tanning ac- tion, Sandra Day O ' Connor became the first woman Supreme Court Jus- tice. In Britain, Americans John McEnroe and Chris Evert-Lloyd triumphed at Wimbledon, as riots subsided in London, leaving the na- tion free to prepare for the wedding of the century. Here at home, groaning as the alarm went off at 3 a.m., we dragged ourselves out of bed to be video witnesses to the marriage of Charles and Lady Di. President Reagan ' s tax cuts were approved while striking Air Traffic Controllers were fired by the thousands. The end of the baseball strike carried with it the notion of split season and Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Tommy Hearns. As anti-nuclear protests in Western Europe and Soviet tanks in Eastern Europe rumbled louder, we made the summer profitable for Hol- lywood, flocking to see the likes of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, SUPERMAN II, and STRIPES. Chi- cagofest and scandal involving Car- dinal Cody ' s alleged diversion of church funds to a friend pre- ceeded our return to school, football games, and sockhops. October through December, as we turned to Homecoming, football playoffs, and Christmas Drive, the na- tion turned to AWACS sales and Mid East turmoils. For us, the Rolling Stones U.S. tour eclipsed reports of huge budget deficits facing Washing- ton. The Los Angeles Dodgers de- feated the New York Yankees in the World Series while the Federal Gov- ernment diverted our attention with rumors of elusive Libyan hit squads. Ronald Reagan talked of winning limited nuclear war and attended the International Summit at Cancun on Third World Poverty. Wayne Wil- liams went on trial for the Atlanta murders, and Richard Allen, Presi- dent Reagan ' s National Security Advisor resigned over scandals in- volving his acceptance of gifts . In contrast to ON GOLDEN POND we pictured the honors of General Jaruzelski ' s martial law in Poland. Looking 1978 to 1980 r jLJjr Mr. Brown — 1382 1382 Administration In his 18th year as principal of the Academy, Father Ronald Rigovsky, O.S.B. continued to lead the faculty and administration by setting annual goals and objectives for the Benet community. Father Ron has traditionally stimu- lated a family atmosphere by announcing a theme or slogan which spurs on an enthusiastic response at religious, social, and athletic activi- ties. On a regular basis Father Ron meets formally and informally to dis- cuss, encourage, and communicate with faculty and staff members. His presence and support is evident at all religious and sports events, drama and music productions, assemblies and award presentations. Ably assisting Father Ron in his duties as Assistant Principal is Fr. Hugh Anderson, O.S.B. Father Hugh helps in the daily operation of the academic program at Benet, stu- dent admissions, the maintaining of academic records, and the coordina- tion of faculty assignments in coop- eration with the department chairmen. Valentine Skluzacek, O.S.B., Chan- cellor of the Academy and Abbot of St. Procopius Abbey, and Sister Charl otte Vesely, O.S.B., Prioress of Sacred Heart Convent. Counselors and Deans play an im- portant role in each student ' s life at Benet Academy. They aid all stu- dents willing to make an effort. The counselors run the guidance library, prepare students for PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests; they assist students with their choice of college. The Dean of students, Mr. James Brown, with assistants, Mrs. Sheila Jacklich, and Brother Edward, con- tinue to maintain and stress codes of discipline and learning. They aid in running the school smoothly and effi- ciently. Their jobs involve not only the students, but extend to the par- ents of the students and faculty members as well. iHiiiiiimiiir Sr. Agnes Ann, O.S.B. (Above Left); Senior Guidance Counselor. Br. Staff Serves Benet No institution can run smoothly without the assistance of staff mem- bers. The Secretaries, Maintenance staff, and Kitchen staff provide the everyday functions of the Academy. Working all year round, the secretarial staff makes communication between departments possible. The physical appearance of the buildings is main- tained by a staff of men and women who serve as engineers, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. Every- day the ladies of the kitchen staff pre- pare and serve lunch for hundreds of hungry students. Above Right: Mrs. Geraldine Bigoness. Team — 13 1 :enf Rich Baumgartner, Coach Goforth — Sports L The 1981 Varsity Baseball team, consisting of 8 juniors and 8 seniors had a fine season which saw them travel from a first place victory in the Granite City South Tournament to their final game against Glenbard South in second round regional ac- tion. Lead by captains Brett Sko- nicki, Tom Shanley. and Jim Kapla and coached by Mr. Wiora and Fr. Ken, this fine group of young men won the first regional game against Downers Grove South before drop- ping to Glenbard. Outstanding team members in- cluded Jim Karafiat, Mike Keough, Steve Baker, both named to all con- ference. Kapla and Skonicki were also honored when they were named to all-area, while Kapla was named the Redwing ' s most valuable player. Special consideration goes to Dan Lifka for his 3 homeruns and Brett Skonicki for his fine pitching, which included 2 no-hitters. Coach Wiora seemed pleased with his team ' s per- formance for the season and looks forward to working with the veteran players again this year. Row 1: Dan Lifka, Mike Keough. Jim Karafiat. Mr. Nagis led this fine, group of baseball players to an overall record of 21-4. This is the best overall record that has been set during Mr. Nagis ' years of coaching the Sophomore Baseball Team. Their Conference record was a devastating 14-0 with Driscoll being the only team that posed any problem. The Freshmen Baseball Team was once again victorious. The team con- cluded this past season with an 1 1-5 record under the supervision of Coach Alvarez. The leading hitter of this tremendous team was Joe Kasko with an awesome average of .537. Others who contributed to this hitting powerhouse included Dan DeCarlo, Leo Demm, Andy Kerwin and Bob Sumeski. This year ' s Varsity squad got off to a promising start by immediately cap- turing three straight non-conference victories. After two losses, the team, with the assistance of their two coaches, Mr. Fedinec and Mr. Stark, were able to pull their pack together in order to capture six of the next seven dual meets finishing with a re- cord of 5-1 in conference meets and 9-5 overall. The Frosh-Soph runners displayed their running ability in a very suc- cessful season. After getting off to a slow start with one victory out of the first five non-conference duals, the young harriers were able to pull their pack together in order to come back triumphantly with a 6-0 conference record. One of the main highlights of the year ' s cross-country season was the success of the girls ' team. After winding up the season with a 4-3 overall record, the lady harriers moved into the District competition, capturing 4th place and qualifying for the sectionals. Under the guidance of head coach Tim Cederblad and assistants Gary Goforth and Denis Moran, the Redwings posted a 5- 1 conference re- cord. Benet lost the final conference game to I.C. in overtime 6-0, causing a three way tie for the title. However, the Redwings earned the playoff berth. The Redwings opened the 4A play- offs against undefeated Ridgewood, and Benet chalked up an impressive 23-13 victory. Then, Benet blew by Rich South 24-0. This victory marked the first time any Benet foot- ball team has made the semi-finals. But Benet ' s championship dream was halted by the eventual state champs Wheaton North in a hard fought 7-0 game. The Redwings placed seven men on the All-WSCC team: Pete Schaub, Steve Hubona, John Lupori, Tom Marth, Steve Camburn, Tim Strange, and Rich Baumgartner. Yet the varsity Redwings coached by Stephanie Lewis finished an outstanding season winning the Naperville Central Invitational, cap- turing both the WSCC championship and the Wheaton Warrenville district title, as well as placing eighteenth in state competition. The frosh soph netters won the conference championship and took two individual championships titles: Meg Sullivan at first singles and Hon- or McDonnel Michelle Leoatti at first doubles. At the conference meet, Varsity took all five individual cham- pionships. (Freshman) Robin Kram- er, (senior) Mary McDermott, and (junior) Kim Rice took the singles ti- tles while Courtney and Whitney Bobosky, and Jeanne Lambke and Robin Lewis won the doubles titles. In the district competition, which the Redwings won with a total of 12 points, Kim Rice and Meg Sullivan filled the singles spots. In his thirteenth year of coaching, Bill Geist took his Redwings to Champaign after winding up a suc- cessful 1981-82 season with an Elite- Eight status. After winning both the regional and sectional tournaments, the team travelled to the DeKalb Su- persectional to take on the Rockford Boylan Titans. Finishing their season with an overall record of 26-3, the Redwings conquered the Titans at Northern Illinois University ' s Assembly Hall 56-43. Setting their sights on the Class AA State Tournament, the Redwings, followed by hundreds of fans, travelled to Champaign to take on tournament-favorite Quincy. In a Friday night quarter-final game, the Redwings proved their strength matching the Quincy Blue Devils. However, Quincy ' s talented players and a 63 game winning streak out- lasted the Redwings, and they pulled ahead in the final quarter. The Red- wings were defeated by Quincy 65- 45. The team was greeted by faculty and students in a Monday morning pep-rally honoring their players for attaining the Elite-Eight status and for playing a wonderfully exciting season. %nt The Road to Champaign We turned out in droves for March Madness games, screaming Moser! Moser! ; Osh! ; Collins! Collins! P.C. ' ; Juice! ; and Big Mack Attack! in honor of our starting five. Basketball fans crawled out of the woodwork and parents stood to see the games; their enthusiasm sparked our cries of Defense! Defense! During the regional final game against Naperville North, we per- fected our new Whoosh-Face! as the Wings sank 21 perfect free throws. From there we cheered the team on to victories over West Au- rora, Glenbard North, and Rockford Boylan as they earned their passage to the Elite-Eight and Assembly Hall. But we had known from the begin- ning — had shouted Where ' re we goin ' ? State! State! since Naper- ville Central. And finally we were there, surviving long bus rides and frantic searches for lodgings near Cham- paign, battling it out with the Quincy fans. Watching their disjointed attempts at Whoosh, we nudged each other as if to say — now the originators are here — Here ' s how it ' s done! As fans we gave our all, as a team they gave their all. And then there was the last chant — We are proud of you, say, we are proud of you! Sweet Sixteem Elite-Eight In the second year of his coaching, Mr. Joe Kilbride led the Sophomore Basketball Team to an overall record of 19-2 and a conference record of 10-2, achieving a second place con- ference position in the process. The band is filled with talented individuals, all acting as a unit. A perfect example of unit perform- ance is the Marching Band. This year, the Marching Redwings high- lighted many local parades as well as parades in Waukegan and down State Street. One must also remember the commendable half-time shows pre- sented at all home football games. The Concert Band performed its traditional Christmas and Spring Concerts to packed houses. The 1812 Overture and Handel ' s Alleluia Chorus were featured numbers. The Flag Corps ' enrollment dou- bled this year. Many students who are not in band participate actively in this group. As usual, the Pep Band kept feet tapping and Pom pons in swing at home basketball games. The Stage Band, wearing tuxedos, performed their unique style of music at teachers dances and were featured at the Variety Show. Most importantly, when one thinks of Benet Band , the name Andrew Marchese comes immediatley to mind. Coach is the man behind the band. This year the 1981-1982 football cheerleading squad began practicing over the summer to improve tech- nique and gymnastic skills. With sharp new cheers and catchy sideline cheers, the girls spurred the Red- wings on to a successful season. The varsity squad consisted of five seniors and fourjuniors. Co-captains Margie Smego and Marianne McCabe kept up the morale of the squad. Under the guidance of a new mod- erator. A new Fight Song routine was created, and practice was expanded to four times a week. Members of the squad attended two camps this year. The Madonna Club performs a similar function under the direction of president Mrs. Romaine Burelbach, sponsoring the Home- coming Pep Rally and Bake Sale and the Mother-Daughter Communion Brunch and Fashion Show. The groups combine to plan activities such as the Parents and Friends Har- vest Dance and meetings with guest speakers and Drama Troupe per- formances. A Year of Changes w Once again, the Benet Herald has proven to be a reliable source of school information. Copy editors be- came a new addition to this year ' s staff. The purpose of these two new positions was to alleviate some of the editor-in-chief s and associate edi- tor ' s extra work load. The staff suc- cessfully used new photo arrange- ments and copy layouts for the im- provement of the paper ' s general appearance. Many new writers also contributed to the over all success of this year ' s paper. The 1981- ' 82 editors of the Benet Herald were: Jocile Walsh, Editor-in- Chief; Kathleen O ' Leary, Associate Editor; Brad Colby, News Editor; Vince Biskupic, Sports Editor; Patty Leonard, Feature Editor; Paula Mlsna and Lexie Hieber, Copy Edi- tors; David Murphy, Photo Editor; and Joe Hantsch, Circulation Man- ager. Once upon a time, not so long ago, in a deep, dark room, there lived a yearbook staff. There were six editors, several devoted staff workers, and one fearless modera- tor. Around each deadline, they locked themselves in this deep, dark room and worked far into the long, black nights to build a year- book for the people in the nearby school. The staff printed pictures, drew up layouts, and wrote copy until they could do no more. Then along came the good witch of the Third Deadline, and she saw how hard the imprisoned staff worked. She waved her magical wand and opened the door at the end of the long, dark tunnel leading out of the deep, dark room. The happy staff skipped merrily through the halls. When they saw the light of day, they knew they were truly free, and lived happily ever after. The End Magic of Marceau French Quarter MARGEL MARCEL! (Above Left): French Club members Tom Wal- lace. Spanish club officers: Ma- rian Quinn President; Brad Colby, Vice-President; Kathy O ' Leary, Sec- retary; and Lynn Dicky, Treasurer joined with Mrs. St. Blancard to plan activities for the year. The student vis- ited Donel Hall in Chicago, to attend the International Folk Festival. The year was also highlighted by a Span- ish Mass. This year ' s French Club added a tremendous number of members. The goal of the club was to enhance the ability of the students to speak the lan- guage, to emphasize the culture, and to partake in certain customs. This club was open to anyone presently enrolled in a French course. The President this year was Nazinin Tahmoorissi and the Secretary Treasurer Carol Berg. Also, a student must have an accu- mulative B average in all other courses in order to be eligible to join the society. Additional members were initiated into the S.H.S. in May of 1981. Mr. Alvarez organizes the society each year and the members vote for the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary of their choice. This years officers included President, John Trimberger; Vice-President. Kathy O ' Leary; the Treasurer, Lynne Dickey; and the Secretary, Marian Quinn. The purpose of the society is to give recognition to those students who have worked hard to become competent in the Spanish language. The society planned many activities including a trip to Spanish-Mexican restaurants. In the second year of the union of the Math and Science Clubs, several successful projects were undertaken. Under the leadership of Secretary Jenny Rissky, Vice-President Debbie Mazil, and President Tom LeComp- te, and the apt moderation of Mr. Szorc, the club studied items of in- terest to the members. One of the projects was a measure- ment of student reaction times under stress. Another was concerned with the physics of locomotives and air- planes. The club also prepared for the annual MAA mathematics exam. The year was one of the most memorable. The Sacred Heart Service Club, organized by Sr. Regina, is an activ- ity designed for sophomore girls who wish to give their time in service at the nearby convent. Men and Women in Service The Benet Academy Servers Soci- ety, moderated by Brother Edward, serves the community and school through various activities. Members of the servers assist at Sunday mass at St. Procopius Abbey and attend a weekly mass at Benet. At the DuPage Convalescent Home, the servers operate bingo games and visit with the patients twice a month. The Ser- vers Society is also affiliated with St. Procopius Parish of Chicago. On Halloween, the group traveled to Chicago to host a party for the chil- dren of the parish. At Christmas, the servers deliver presents to the needy members of St. Procopius in conjunc- tion with the Christmas Drive. Also at Christmas, the servers minister to the older monks at the Abbey through caroling. The servers, in all their activities, strive to serve, not be served. Marian Society: Front Row: Julie Bien. Council Moves Onward and Upward The 1981-82 Student Council, under the leadership of President Marty D ' Ambrose, went through several major changes in its struc- ture. Over the summer and during the first two meetings of the school year, nine ammendments to the Council ' s By-Laws were passed. Under these changes, Chris Hurley, Vice- President, takes on the responsibili- ties of Cabinet Coordinator, formerly a separate position. The position of Supplies Coordinator, filled by Yvet- te Eber, was created for the purpose of keeping the S.G. office organized. Cabinet members are now responsi- ble for appointing a committee secretary and for keeping ajournal of decisions and actions relating to that committee ' s activities. The most controversial change occurred with the approval of a new system for the election of council officers. In the fu- ture, the President and Vice- President will be elected together on a ticket, with the Treasurer and Secretary being appointed to their positions on the basis of ability. Working closely with Fr. Bob, council moderator, Chris and Marty have stressed the writing of reports and the keeping of journals as a means of recording information valu- able to next year ' s committee chair- persons and officers. Treasurer Nan- cy Brachle has implemented a new procedure for making appropriations and Jeanne Lambke, Secretary, has been busy keeping track of weekly reports, minutes, and agendas, as well supervising the typing of much miscellaneous information. A different method of communica- tion between the student body and student council was initiated this year. Through the use of a survey- type questionnaire, dealing with sub- jects ranging from sock hops to sports and cultural events, the Coun- 90 Secretary Jeanne Lamke. Treasurer Nancy Brachle. ident Chris Hurley, President Marty D ' Ambrose, cil hopes to arrange for a variety of events that produce maximum stu- dent support and participation. In or der to further promote a spirit of unity and understanding within the W.S.C.C., a student exchange prog- ram was introduced. As part of the program, Benet students spend a day at one of the other schools in the W.S.C.C. and also guide visiting stu- dents from the other W.S.C.C. schools around Benet. Everyone in- volved in the exchange learns and understands considerably more ab- out the other schools and the similar- ities they share with Benet. Benet has moved upward in Dis- trict and State Council organizations through two very special people: Kelly Green and Jim Siddall. Jim ran for and won the Vice-Presidency of the Northeast District of the Illinois Association of Student Councils. As Vice-President, Jim is responsible for compiling the district ' s handbook and for organizing group discussion leaders for the upcoming N.E.D. convention in March. Kelly Green, culminating a rise in rank from President of the N.E.D., became the first young lady from a private school to elected President of the Illinois Association of Student Councils, and the second Benet stu- dent in the past three years to hold this prestigous position. The most memorable acts! included: Beatle-Mania, where numbers of students gathered on stage during the songs to dance; a dance number choreographed by Craig Rawlawski and Marianne McCabe entitled Sing, Sing, Sing ; and a Senior parody on the Sound of Music including such well known numbers as How do You Solve the| Problems Here at Benet? Roughing It It began with a 12 hour Sunday bus ride on the first day and a 15 mile treck across a lake on the next. This, at first, doesn ' t sound very appealing to many, but to some it was the Cana- dian canoe trip. After the group of 40 people left the trading post in Cana- da, civilization was sparce and the peacefulness slowly become a way of life. It rained almost every day but everyone got used to being wet. The group ate dehydrated food and the fish caught with bare hands. The mosquitoes became the mascots to the canoers. This may not sound like a vacation brochure, but to many the laziness in the afternoon and the quietness at night was a wonderful way to spend 1 1 days. THE PLACE: A YMCA not far from Soho THE STORY: The fugitives travelled far and wide in search of a Scots husband on a horse, looking in such conspicuous places as: the Tower (with keys) Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, the British Museum, the National Gal- lery, the Tube (London subway), telephone booths in the metropolitan area, Stokes Poges, Harrod ' s and the bottom of the fountain. Off limits areas opened for their convenience by theUnion included 40 miles of pas- sages in the walls of Canterbury Cathe- dral, a previously undiscovered Ro- man fort in a nearby Canterbury sub- urb, a chimney place in Hampton Court Palace, and an early morning walk to Soho. Their quest led them to the Borscht ' n Tears restaurant, to a tube race through London ' s exten- sive underground, and finally to fish ' n chips and bar mirrors in Por- tobello Road. Unsuccessful in cap- turing their prize, they turned to col- lecting bounty for a certain history teacher, Daniel Nagis, (who shall re- main nameless), for additional con- sideration. Charles Brummel was not forgotten either. Suffering from jet lag, 23 faceless zombies stalked the halls of the sacred Academy within 24 hours of the end of their ordeal, armed with only their bounties and their stories. Welcome to Benet Home- coming ' 81. Your exciting tour of the tropics was planned by chairpersons Cindy Rauckhorst and Nancy Brach- le, under the direction of the Academy Travel Agency. The first stop on this once-in-a- lifetime vacation is the annual pow- derpuff game. Here you can see senior women and junior girls and the survival of the fittest theory in ac- tion, while their cheerleaders out- do each other ' s versatility and spirit on the sidelines. Vince Biskupic will describe and interpret the coaches behavioral traits as the players end the game tied at 18. You may never see anything like this again. Your busy week in the south seas will begin as the native girls compete for the position of Queen. This quaint custom allows one freshman, sopho- more, and junior girl to serve the Senior Queen, Margie Smego, and her attendants Julie Bien, Liz Duvic, Chris Hurley, and Ann Madden in their weeklong reign. Towards the middle of your week the natives will begin to get restless as they honor the wisest of their number on They ' re Our Teachers Day, and celebrate the arrival of the newest members of their family at Big Sister, Little Sister. 102 Homecoming Week 1981 Above Left: After receiving the ball from team- mate Mary Hansen, Senior Sue Kawa runs with the ball. Aloha!! r m i The Human Relations Committee, run by Senior Tom Marth, organized one of the most successful drives ever for the 1981 Christmas season. Assisted by an able group of sub- committee chairpersons, Tom planned a drive which brought in about $5800 dollars through various activities such as mistletoe, donut day, and pie-in-the-face. During the week, two films on world hunger were shown in every study hall to inform students about the problem the drive attempts to relieve during Christmas each year. Students do- nated time after school to assemble mistletoe, wrap toys for the Christ- mas boxes, make stockings, and gave up the first day of their vacation to pack and deliver the gift boxes to needy families in and around Du Page County. As in past years, Br. Ed and a group of servers delivered boxes to St. Procopius Parish in Chicago. Families received ham or turkey, sta- ples such as potatoes, bread, cereal and fruit, and extras such as hot chocolate and goodies from stock- ings. Invaluable to the drive were the generous donations made by Benet Alumni and friends of the Academy. $5,800 For Charity (Upper Left): Tug-o-War champions The Scrubs. Give those men a Blue Ribbon. These couples were enter- tained by Unity with music that ranged from fast-beat rock ' n ' roll to slow, romantic ballads. The decora- tion of moons, stars, top hats and canes added to the Midnight Mad- ness theme. We had the usual senior reactions — eager to move on to college or business life yet still reluctant to call ourselves adults. This year we felt losses from within but found strength helping each other and have grown as a result. Senior year should be a year of changes; our experiences of 1981- 82 have affected us more profoundly than any of us could have forseen. We ' ve also had our moments of triumph. As our football team was the first in Benet ' s history to reach the sim-finals in state play- offs, we celebrated together. Volleyball was another source of pride for us, and basketball proved to be traditionally suc- cessful. This combination of the light hearted and the serious have made the class and the year 1982 unique. We will not be forgotten, and we will never forget. Along with the many new decisions we have to make, we also have a lot of exciting activities to look forward to. There are still pressures of SAT and ACT, but Prom can also be anticipated. Once again, sports becomes an integral part of our daily high school life, but we now have a chance to compete on the varsity level. We are maturing into fine young adults and are appreciating what Benet can do for us. 158 Juniors Buciak, Sandra L. Bulmann. Bryan Burg, Carol A. Byrne, Margaret R. Byron, Nancy J. Our trips down Martin ' s Hall are not blind walks anymore but learned paths. We ' ve discovered that the teachers are not just here to teach us but to become our friends. The students we ' ve met are no longer only passers-by but our compan- ions. Our whole outlook on Benet has gone from frightened and naive to secure and educated. We are looking forward to the rest of our years at Benet. Tom Strange 168 Sophomores Bouzek, John C. Bradley, Daniel T. Breen. Alexander L Broderick, Mary M. Brunton. Mary K. Our first glimpse of Benet came at Frosh- Fest in late August. After the first few weeks when we no longer got lost in school, things began to look up. We lived through the axioms of Algebra, Fresh- man science and shrugged through our languages. The year was not all work, there was play, too. While upperclass- men were calm and collected at sock- hops, we freshmen were beginning to dis- cover one another. 178 Freshmen Campana, Beth A. Campbell, Susan M. Cannestra, Vincent P. Gotmer 1949-1982 Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea; But sad mortality o ' er — sways their power. How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea Whose action is no stronger than a flower? O, how shall summer ' s honey breath hold out Against the wreckful seige of battering days. When rocks impregnable are not so stout. Nor gates of steel so strong, but Time decays? O fearful meditation! where, alack, Shall Time ' s best jewel from Time ' s chest lie hid? Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back? Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid? O ' none, unless this miracle have might, That in black ink my love may still shine bright.
