Blue Devils Manhandle Cadets The Cadets opened their 1983 football season with a disappointing 22-0 loss to the Statesboro Bluedevils. Big plays highlighted Statesboro's scoring attack throughout the night, while the Cadets were led by captains John Mell and Richard Lutz. The Cadet defense was unable to contain the speed of the Statesboro running backs. The biggest play defensively was an interception by Craig Moore which prevented a touchdown. Cadet spirit was not at it's peak and a lack of enthusiasm halted any hopes of a cadet comeback. The game's M.V.P. was John Mell. ZF 84

Cadets Sting Blue Jackets The Benedictine Cadets recorded their first victory of the season with a hard fought 7-0 win over the Savannah High Blue Jackets. The win put the Cadets ahead 40-38-8 in the long lasting rivalry that began in 1903. The Cadets score came on a 22 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Richard Lutz to Brian Watson in the third quarter. The offense could not capitalize on other drives due to turnovers. The defense limited the Jackets to 96 yards total offense throughout the night. Jesse Fox recovered a fumble and had a crucial interception while John Mell's interception shut down Savannah High's last offensive drive. Captains Jim Cain and Mike Loncon led the rejuvenated Cadets to victory. Outstanding play was turned in by Jesse Fox, Leo Sheehan, Brian Anderson, John Mell, Jim Cain, and Brian Watson. M.V.P. was Brian Anderson. 85
