W ' C ,- o 1 H n B, D ' e ' 'l f C . . , , ' . l I G a YH ' 36 A HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1955 Our hxstory at St Gertrude's can be compared to a book wr1tten 1n four volumes Some of the pages are yellow w1th age but the memor1es are al1ve and ever young 1n our hearts In order to real1ze the1r worth let us beg1n w1th the beglnnxng On our f1rst pages we see g1rls from many schools gathered together to form the Class of 1955 lt was 1n th1s September month that we f1rst formed the fr1endsh1ps that have made our h1gh school l1fe so prec1ous It was 1n th1s month too that we f1rst part1c1pated 1n such act1v1t1es as the Glee Club and the freshman class p1cn1c In May of that year we had the thr1ll of our f1rst May Day Th1s our freshman year w1ll always stand out 1n our mmds for It was d1fferent from anyth1ng that we had ever exper1enced We were a contrad1ct1on to ourselves for although we were proud to be 1n h1gh school we felt so 1ns1g n1f1cant when we saw all the other classes ahead of us However graduat1on f1lled us w1th consolatlon for we knew that we were on the way and that we too would some day be the SENIORS It was w1th th1s thought 1n m1nd that we parted for our summer vacat1on As we turn the colorful pages of volume two we recall w1th pleasure the f1rst days of our new un1form for lt was m our sophomore year that our smart green sk1rts and wh1te blouses were 1ntroduced to the school It gave us a feel mg of pr1de to be recogn1zed as a St Gertrude's g1rl wherever we wore them Too we found It grat1fy1ng to know that there was a class lower than we and to reahze that we were now on the second step of our ladder toward graduat1on from St Gertrude's When the pages of volume three open before us we recall most v1v1dly the events of our th1rd year For one th1ng the sen1ors and all that they d1d be came most 1nterest1ng to us We not1ced partlcularly the way that they went about ra1s1ng money for the1r class tr1p We felt a l1ttle thrxll when they were measured for the1r caps and gowns We were sad when they marched down the a1s1e of St Bened1ct's Church w1th the1r d1plomas 1n the1r hand for they had been our fr1ends and compamons for three years and now the respons1b1l1ty of a semor was only one short summer away from us The cr1sp whmte pages of volume four st1ll smell of 1nk We turnthese cher1shed pages w1th pr1de for each one holds a memory never to be forgotten In September of th1s never to be forgotten year St Gertrude's opened 1ts doors to the largest enrollment ln 1ts h1story We as the sen1or class took our place at the head of the student body The fears of last spr1ng were gone and we as sumed our respons1b1l1t1es w1th conf1dence 1n ourselves and our ab1l1t1es Now at last we found ourselves do1ng thmgs for the last t1me The Song Contest the Chnstmas party were all d1fferent although we had done them before for th1s t1me was now the very last How very strange lt seemed to be always s y1ng h1s IS for the last tlme As wmter turned mto spr1ng we packed our bags for the long ant1c1pated class tr1p School events came and went rap1dly too rap1dly and fmally there was nothmg ahead but our graduatxon n1ght That too became a reahty We end our book to the strams of Pomp and C1rcumstance for though the Joys of our h1gh school days are now only a memory we the Graduatmg Class of 1955 feel certam that as we walk toward the future we shall f1nd there somethmg as lovely as our hlgh school days at St Gertrude's Barba ra Ensrrwann 37 .
