CLEVELAND, OHIO 44104 Volume 45 1984-1985 EMERGING 85 The 1984-1985 yearbook staff has named this year 's publication, EMERGING '85. The reason why we decided to name our yearbook this is because of all the changes that are taking place throughout our school. Among these changes are the renovation of our science building, the building of a new chapel, and the construction of anew addition to St. Andrew Abbey. We the seniors, will not totally benefit from these changes, but we these changes will truly help Benedictine emerge totally as the “Home of Champions. ” r - Table of Contents Seniors 8-33 Underclass 34-59 Athletics 60-95 Activities 96-129 Faculty 130-145 Ads 146-174 1985 YEARBOOK STAFF MODERATOR Mr. Joseph Csazar EDITOR-IN-CHIEF David M. Even though he has only been at Benedictine for four years, he has earned the respect of his fellow teachers, the administration, and most importantly of his students. Mr. Nolan has played an important role in the success of Benedictine. He has been the Senior English and Study Skills teacher for the past four years. He helped coach the 1981 football team to a state title. He helped coach this year’s team to a playoff appearance. He has coached the wrestling team to a place where they are now respected throughout Northeast Ohio. We, the Yearbook Staff, felt it was time to reward this man for all the time and effort he has put into Benedictine to truly make it ‘‘The Home of Champions.” Accounting II Looking Up The Corporate Ladder Whuh?! Fr. Fiotian Award winner Stan Korinek. The 1984 footbll season was a good one for Coach Bossu’s Bengals. The Bengals advanced to the state playoffs, after posting a 7-2 record during the regular season. An overtime field goal by Westlake ended the Bengals season in the Regional Playoff game. The Bengals opened the season with a big victory over Normandy but followed with a loss to tough Warren Western Reserve. The Bengals then strung together four staight victories including a 31-14 trouncing of state ranked Fremont Ross and a thrilling last second victory over Walsh Jesuit on a field goal by Mike Gurney 20-19. Week seven was one to be forgotten with Lake Catholic being the opponent and victor. The Bengals bounced back to beat an always tough Central Catholic. It was a well balanced team with a strong defense, a fine pitching staff which 11 times held the opposition to 1 run or less, and a power packed offense that 6 times scored 15 or more runs in a game. Leading the hurlers were Deininger(1.98 ERA, 67 K's), and Wanke (0.98 ERA). Together with Herbst, Palumbo, Zdanowicz, and Martin, they stymied the opposing batters. Pacing the hitting attack were Zdanowicz (.490), Gallagher (.464), and Wanke (.392); and when combined with the rest of the offense, they made quick work of opposing pitchers. With this year's efforts, Coach Bossu's 31 year career mark was raised to an impressive 579 wins — 223 losses — 2 ties. 84 • Denotes Sectional Game Senior catcher Frank Mulac shows his speed 85 Mike heads to third base. Besides making thousands of dollars available for the school annually, this group has raised enough funds to donate $10,000 for equipment and supplies in the High School phase of the current Development Program. 160 A LAST look at faculty 173 PAUL D. OLEKSIAK It is with deep regrets, that through an inadvertent mistake, the portrait of Paul Oleksiak was unable to be printed along with those of his fellow classmates. We hope that he will accept this page and these pictures as a token of our willingness to make amends, and we offer our sincerest apologies. — The Yearbook Staff This page is dedicated to the memory of Doug Hooten. The Seniors remember him for his sense of humor and his way of getting his point across. He has been missed. May he stay in our minds and hearts forever. 175 Class of ’85, As we finish our last year at Benedictine we look back and remember all the wonderful times we had together. We also remember the real but not so wonderful things. But we know the years we did spend with each other were the best years of our lives. They were filled with friends who shared and loved, teachers who cared, ano parents who understood. When others look back at our class they will see the special bond holding us together. This bond is the love and spirit of Benedictine. Next year when we split apart the bond will still hold fast because we are a class, a very special class, the CLASS OF ’85!
