Sickness which had seemed to become extinct became alive again with the ideas of Walton, St. John, and Nauman. They were mostly seen in the stands at the basketball games wearing togas, swimming trunks, long Johns, or jockey shorts. The purpose of the club was to encourage and psych up the fans to get live, loud, and most of all to support our Bengals. Those involved should be proud of then sick selves. Starters Joe Zaller, Jim Schwonek, and captain Steve Asseff led the team to a 440-250-250 victory with a final round surge that saw the Bengals outscore their opponents 180-20-20. The sophomores' winning team. The freshmen are momentarily dumbfounded Benedictine held an academic challenge of its own this year. The National Honor Society sponsored the scholastic competition between each of the four classes. The sophomores emerged victorious, while the seniors came in last with -20 points. However, the seniors were the sickest and proved to be the real winners. Seniors T.d, Bill, and Ken discuss strategy. Activities 71 STUDENT COUNCIL Moderated by Father Jude, the Student Council was active again this year. They held a toy drive and delivered many goods to needy areas. They also held many student exchanges. The main event of the school year sponsored by the Student Council was the Gong Show. The top prize of $25 was won by the Bengal Breaking Force. Entering the 1983 football season the Bengals had only one thing on their minds — to regain the state football title. However, this dream did not come true as the Bengals finished with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. This statistic is misleading because only a clipping penalty, a kickoff return, and a blocked punt kept them out of the playoffs. Three plays, three mistakes stood between them and a possible state title. Two of their losses came to teams which qualified for the state playoffs. There was much talent on this team, but the big guns weren't discovered until the end of the season. Aggressiveness and determination were present, but when the Bengals relaxed for a few minutes trouble seemed to always set in. This year's team, however, did reach a milestone earning the school's 300th victory since the first game in 1929. Another highlight was the win over St. Ignatius in the final seconds. Casey. Third Row: W. Turek, P. Cosgrove, T. Zdanowitz, R. Bruncheck. Missing: M. Palumbo. For the second consecutive year the Junior Varsity baseball team captured the Cleveland Area Baseball Conference crown. The J.V.'s under Coach Thamann had a league record of 10 wins against 4 defeats and a overall record of 14 wins and 6 losses. With a solid core of freshmen, mixed in with some sophomores the J.V.'s had an excellent season. Sophomore Will Turek and freshman Tom Zdanowitz paced the hitting attack. Freshman Matt Palumbo along with Turek and Zdanowitz made up the starting rotation with sophomore Matt Martin pitching consistently in relief. Warmups. Palumbo m action. Carcelli turns til'd.
