The milestones of these past fifty years have been retraced to portray an era that will never be forgotten. In the Nostalgia Section an attempt was made to relive the Golden Years of Benedictine High School. Each Yearbook Section is highlighted by two pages of Golden Oldies, which are portrayed in blue tint. 7 SUNDAY MAY 1st, 1977 Gucsi Speaker: Chuck Noll Dedication: The 1977 Benedictine has been dedicated to Rev. Roger Cries, Principal of Benedictine High School. For many years Father Roger has played a significant role in the molding of young boys into 'Men of Benedictine. ” Father Roger has completed his last year as Principal of Benedictine High School and has been named Prior of St. Andrew’s Abbey for the coming year. Both men by their display of hard work and tireless dedication set examples to all at our high school. The passing of Father Fiorian in August of 1969 and the unexpected death of Father Damian in October of this past school year have left hearts saddened in our Benedictine Community. Father Damian and Father Fiorian were both totally committed to their roles as priests, teachers, and coaches. But most of all they were committed to their role as involved human beings. The reason for such a satisfying outcome was mainly due to one of the largest turnouts in years - 63 couples. Earlier in the week, the candidates from Erieview, Lumen Cordium. Notre Dame. Regina, and Villa Angela were shown around the school by their escorts and were introduced to the administration and also to all the students attending the Homecoming. The candidates then were taken to the cafeteria where they gave some very interesting speeches on why they wanted to become this year's Homecoming Queen. Because of the help of Fr. Joachim, and a few seniors along with Mr. Csaszar. the cafeteria looked like a grand ballroom on Homecoming night. Dancing went on all night with the music provided by H. C. Hooker. Finally towards the end of the night, Terry Seitz from Erieview was chosen as Queen. 4? Janice Boyza HOMECOMING LEFT TO RIGHT: Chris St. John, Janice Boyza, Ed Busi, Peggy Goggin. Benedictine students have come through in bringing a very heart warming Christmas to the children at Health Hill by donating money and toys to the annual toy drive. Led by Santa, who was Fr. Roger again, and along with his helpers, the senior class officers and Br. Phillip and some members of the Key Club, many presents were brought to these special children making their Christmas a very happy one. AA National Honor Society SITTING: M. Gnatowski, Pres.: Fr. PARENT BOOSTERS CLUB li would be useless to list all the help that the Parent Boosters Club has given to the school because the list would probably be endless. But just to name a few, this year along with their annual donations to the school, sponsoring of the sports banquets, helping out with freshman orientation and the roast beef dinner at open house, and the Mardi Gras, the booster club purchased a 1977 Chevrolet Van for the school which was placed under the control of the athletic department. Thanks to the good Christian and loyal members of the boosters club, the school seems to improve each year. 4V F R E S H M A N 0 R 1 E N T A T I 0 N To prevent some of the usual mad panic of freshmen on their first day in school, the frosh along with their parents briefly visited the school on orientation night. Along with receiving their class schedules, they also had the chance to get acquainted with some of the faculty. 50 Academic Challenge The Academic Challenge Team of Captain Ed Busi, Jim Cooper, and Tony Matlock, made a commendable showing by being runner-up to football rival Massillon and beating out Sandusky under the preparation and help of Mr. Evert. The second play performed by the Drama Club, a murder mystery entitled The 13th Chair also proved to be very satisfying. As before in the previous play our talented students brought in a packed house of well pleased people and according to Director Fr. Timothy, things look bright in future years for the Drama Club. VARSITY ’rB CLUB 59 This eggciting eggsperience took place on Wednesday May 11, 1977, after the egging of Fr. William which got him so steamed up that he fried. On that day Mr. Heyer eggstinguished their mischievous fires. After this shellacking both Huesdash and St. John were left shellshocked. Mr. Heyer left the eggsperience rather eggshausted, but he left St. John and Huesdash with some eggstremely scrambled thoughts . . . while the pain was eggstremely eggscruti-ating for these two young eggs-amples, most of the eggstatic fans cracked up over the eggsperience. THE EGGSECUTION 60 PIZZA EATING CONTEST The winner of this obese contest was Terry Tubs' Armelli. He out ate Andy Stocky Smith, Ed Blute Tomba. Tony Scieve Dipetro, and darkhorse Al Meathook Washington. Terry also received a check for $10.00 from the student council for his fatness. 61 X STUDENT COUNCIL COOPER’S LAST MEAL. The only way to realize all the work that the Stu dent Council did this year would be listing all the various activities they sponsored this school year. The Student Council ran buses to football games, sold tickets and buttons for football games, raised money for St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, ran the Thanksgiving food drive, brought back senior privileges, devised schedule for the weekly group meetings, donated money for the Jazz Concert, held a pizza eating contest, conducted elections for Mr. ”B and class officers, appropriated money to purchase a new sign for the front of the school, ran school outings to Geauga Lake, and conducted a student exchange with Villa Angela. All these activities would probably not have turned out the way they did without the help and proper guidance of Moderator Fr. Dominic. EL PRESIDENTE LEADS THE CHARGE. STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. THE 1977 This year's yearbook staff set impossible goals for itself, then went ahead and met them. Starting in the spring of 76. Mr. Csaszar and editor-in-chicf Ed Busi started planning a book that would take a year and a half to complete, more than $10,000 in ads and donations, and countless hours of work by the editors and cameramen. Each member was given a list of people to contact for ads in the summer, and several car washes were held in conjunction with the senior class. In the fall, the activities and sports began, and the cameramen were kept busy running to and fro covering them. The annual Yearbook Polka dance was a huge financial success, and a good time was had by all. Soon deadlines came and the editors were kept busy trying to keep up, especially for the final deadline, when it was past three in the morning when the book was finished. Looking back on our yearbook experience, we feel that it was a privilege to work with a man as truly dedicated as Mr. Csaszar. 64 YEARBOOK STAFF R. Vozar, J. Buttiua, J. Martinez, J. Cooper. Three of them came through the air, with quarterback Jamie Georgeson showing good form. An interception by Joe Marino rounded out the scoring. A good performance was also turned in by the defense, which held the Orange Tigers to only six points. ORANGE Martinez and Few lead the pack. Coach in an anxious moment. CHAGRIN FALLS In another rainy game, the Bengals tied a surprisingly tough Chagrin Falls team. Senior Bill Clayton scored two touchdowns, one on an eighty yard run, the other with only three minutes to go in the game. The Tigers battled back to tie up the game, however, to the dismay of Benedictine coaches and fans. This put our record at 1-0-1, setting a trend for the rest of the year of not coming up with the necessary points at the crucial times. 2T T“' PARMA The Bengals faced a fired-up Parma team in their next game. Clayton scored one touchdown, and Frank Szocs scored a field goal, but late in the game our opponents capitalized on an unfortunate roughing the kicker call and went on to score in the closing minutes, giving us our first defeat. Offensively, the Bengals dominated the game with twice as many total yards. Frank Szocs scores again. It was a frustrated football team that went to Painesville, and the pent-up anger was released in the form of six touchdowns, all by different players. The Bengal defense also put together a fine game, and it seemed as if we were back on the right track again, going into Massillon. MASSILLON Traditionally the biggest game of the year, the Massillon game added a further setback to the Benedictine hopes. Both teams came into the game fired-up emotionally, but the Bengals could only keep it for one well-played quarter. The offense could never get going, and the Tigers were left with good field position on several occasions, which they took advantage of. Our lone score came on a field goal by Szocs. WICKLIFFE Senior Bob Conwell came into his own in this game, rolling up 175 yards and scoring two touchdowns. A1 Washington, one of the mainstays of the team, played his first game at fullback (which could be the reason for Conwell’s explosive game) and scored once. Bengals lose the fumble - but win the game. ST. THOMAS The Bengals roared onto Louisville and completely dominated the game, with Germano at quarterback. The scoring started with Peterson returning a blocked punt. The other three touchdowns were scored by the backs, going through holes made by tackles Tomba and Huesdash. The victory put our record at 4-2-1, and hopes were still alive for the state championship. Portrait of determination. The Bad Cats ST. JOSEPH We went into this game soaring emotionally, but couldn't get on the scoreboard even though we had good field position several times. A fumble deep in Benedictine territory allowed Joe's to score the game’s lone touchdown. This was a tough defensive struggle, with Tanner and Armelli playing very aggressively. The Homecoining game was played on a sunny day in from of a lively crowd, bui it was a dismal performance for the listless Bengals. We couldn't seem to coordinate our efforts and went down to defeat to Latin 15-7. The defensive secondary was burned on long passes, and the offense could only manage seven started out in good after the long ride to and although we wavered first quarter, we held on to . For the first time in the past two seasons, the Baby Ben-gals were defeated by the opposition. However, they played very tough and showed a lot of character. They had no individual stars, although many showed they possessed some fine talent. The team was led by Scott Modzelewski, Scott Peterson, Melvin Ware, and John Savage. Impressive performances were also turned out by Joe Buerger and Jerry Mismas. This year's team was coached by Mr. O'Shaughnessy, Mr. Evert, and Fr. Roger. no Plugging up the line. To reach into yourself and find the strength to continue along the merciless trail. You go until breathing is next to impossible, your legs have a will of their own that says STOP, and you want only to give in to the desire. Man- It was a tough year for the varsity roundballers. The team had a potential that was never quite realized. Senior A1 Washington was the team leader, with juniors Pere Germano and Jim Few contributing to what could have been a very good team. Sophomore John Lanier was a surprising starter this year, and although he is not big, he was invaluable as a ballhandler, and he should have a bright future ahead of him. Twice this year we went up against a strong Latin team, who were the eventual state champs. Once, the Bengals were fired up, and with a large fan support outscored the powerhouse for the first quarter in our own gym, but then collapsed and fell behind and lost the game. Coach O’Shaughnes-sy’s team had their highlight when they beat Lutheran East, a highly touted team. With five seniors graduating, next year's team will have to build, using this year's underclassmen as the nucleus. Alvin ai the line Pete passes to Marshall. It was a very well balanced team led by Craig Manning, Joe Mincek and Tim Brown. Although they lacked size they came back with determination to make up for it. During the dual meet season, which started latesbecause of bad weather, the spikers dominated most of their opponents, losing only once. The Bengal trackmen put in a fine showing at all the tournaments entered, including a spectacular performance at the Solon Relays, which we won. We went into the postseason with a few key injuries, but still took the runnerup spot in a tough sectional meet. The districts rurned out to be a killer to the state championship hopes of the cin-dermen, however, especially for hurdler Ricky Saunders, a definite state contender, who pulled up. Benedictine had a fine showing at the state meet in Columbus. Tim Burton placed seventh in the mile run, after making it to the tournament the week before by running twice on a hot afternoon. Melvin Minor took a sixth in the 880 yard dash, and the mile relay came in fifth to give Benedictine a hard-earned five points overall. The varsity baseball team started slowly, but soon gained a winning form as the weather warmed up. During the season, fine pitching won many games, but couldn’t make up for errors committed by the fielders. Dan Bucciere, Bob Stoffko, Nick Baucco and P.ete Germano made up the starting rotation, with Greg Sheredy pitching consistently when he started. In the sectional game, we fought back in the late innings to beat Chagrin, and it was the same story in the semifinals of the district against Ashtabula. The District championship was a breeze for us as we blew Chardon away, 4-0. The season came to an end against Buckeye in the regional semis as we lost 7-6 in a close battle. Mgr. John Goggin, P. Marc Mariani led the team in base hits with 25, and Paul Augustine led with a .378 B.A. Bill Siford was tops with 17 RBI’s, while Tony Pletka and Jerry Mismas can be proud of their .326 and .362 batting averages, respectively.
