Since that first meeting, the two schools have met forty-one times, with the record tied at 20 wins - 20 losses and 1 tie. The Lions had an incredible winning streak, as they won the first 15 games, from 1930 to 1947. Since 1947, the Lions have managed to come up with victories only in 1954, 1958, 1960, 1963, and 1967. Since my time from being a Freshman to a Senior, now, at Benedictine, Latin has been held to zero points against the Bengals, 1971 - 20-0, 1972 - 23-0, 1974 - 0-0. The squad finished the season with a disappointing 2-G-2 record. Main reasons for the losing season included inexperience and poor offense and defensive play. The gridders started the season with three straight losses and never could get a solid winning streak going. Although the defense managed to shut out three of the last four opponents, the Bengals earned just one victory and two ties in those ballgames. Despite the losing season, the returnees from the state title team will have memories they can cherish for a lifetime. Hopefully the future will be brighter for veteran Coach August Bossu and the Bengals. First was a victory over St. Ignatius, then came a terrific mauling of St. Joe’s 28-0, and again over Painesville, 47-6, looking very impressive. Next was St. Ed’s, always rough, so the Baby Bengals settled for a 6-6 tie, but quickly started the ball rolling again by defeating their last two teams 14-8, and 40-0. They went undefeated into the Catholic Freshman Championship against Latin and came out still undefeated, winning by the score of 14-6. 81 FROSH -VS.- LATIN. . . 82 . . . Moving on down the season, they met some stiff competition in losing to Brunswick and Wickliffe. Winning the next two, the Bennies came to the season's end where it was again St. Ed's, who always packs a punch. Regretfully, theirs was a knockout. Dominic had talent and depth to work with this season. Seniors Mark Iwan and Ernie Coulter provided experience and leadership, and Juniors Mike Holt and Mike Jones developed into outstanding talent. Iwan broke several course records throughout the season. Highlights of the season were second place finishes in the Willoughby South Invitational, the Chanel Invitational, and the Sectionals. The Bengals qualified for district competition for the first time ever in Cross Country. The runners also finished 6th in the Edgewater Invitational. The Cougars won impressively, 38-16. Mike Mella won by a pin and Ralph Dicamillo and Gerry Glowik won on decisions. Glowik whipped highly-touted Ed Prosuch, 9-2. Competing in a tri-meet, the Bengals came upon the short end again as Fairview and Richmond His. finished 1-2. A powerful Brunswick squad scored a decisive 49-9 victory. Perry Difranco and Glowik won on convincing decisions, and Dicamillo earned a draw. The Bengals closed their dual meet season against East Senate champion, JFK. The Fighting Eagles proved to be too strong, and won 32-20. Captain John Molchan won by a pin while Difranco, Malysa, Glowik, and Dipietro all won on decisions. Dicamillo battled city champion William Jones to a 1-1 draw. The rugged schedule helped prepare the Bengals for the Class AA-A Sectionals at Richmond His. Five Bengal Matmen qualified for the districts. The Junior duo of Dicamillo and Glowik finished first in the 126 and 175 weight classes. Senior Brian Cooper came in third at 167. The Bengals opened Class AA Sectional play with an 8-0 victory over Central Catholic behind the shut out pitching of junior right-hander Wally Piszczor. Next, the team captured the sectional championship with a 6-5 triumph over Lorain Brookside in a record 21 inning marathon. Junior righthander Steve Manaus pitched over 10 innings of shutout ball in relief to get credit for the victory. The Bengals opened district play with a 4-3 come-from-bchind win over Independence as Piszczor recorded his fifth triumph of the season. The team lost in its bid for a district championship to a powerful Medina Buckeye squad which reached the state finals in Columbus. Highlights of the regular season included wins over arch-rival Cathedral Latin, West Senate champion Lincoln-West, and perennial Class AAA powers Brush and Mayfield. Senior captain Jim McCloy was the team's leading hitter with a .370 average. Junior shortstop Ron Hodakievic was another starter who hit well over .300. Senior left-hander Ed Seitz had the highest winning percentage with a 5-2 record. Senior catcher John Colagiovanni was an iron man behind the plate. 101 BHS 1 Euclid 4 BUS 11 Lincoln-West 2 BHS 10 W.R.A. 7 BHS 4 Shaker His. 5 BHS 0 Cleveland His. 6 BHS 1 Will. South 6 BHS 8 Will. Bucciere and freshman righthander Pete Germano accounted for 12 of the team's 14 victories. Bucciere, along with juniors Tom Adamo and Bill Baldzicki, and freshman Terry Modzelewski were starters who hit over .300. Congratulations to Coach Fr. Larry. 1975 VARSITY TRACK SUM MAR Y The Varsity Track Team had a very good season this spring, consisting of talented athletes. Heading the team were 10 seniors. 9 juniors, and 16 sophomores. The spikers started their season with a decisive win over John Marshall 79-48. This was their first dual meet of the season, being that the first two were unfortunately canceled due to snow. Staying on the winning foot, they met Latin and won 110-17. Benedictine competed again in the Mansfield Relays. The next meeting, against Chanel, was snowed out. Triumphantly, Benedictine beat Ignatius and Lake Catholic in a tri-meet, scoring 84-43-32. Next the Bengals fell short by 7 1 2 points losing to Western Reserve Academy, but finished ahead of Gilmour, 75 1 2-68-15 1 2. The Bengals entered the Bellaire Relays and finished 24th out of 75 teams with 9 points. Challenging the Bengals next. University lost 74-50. Entering the West Tech Relays, the Bengals had entries in all events. The spikers placed fourth, behind Glenville 3rd, John Adams 2nd, and Bay 1st. Taking the only first place of the evening for Benedictine was the High Jump, consisting of Joe Zuccaro, Rick Saunders, and Mike Wilson. The whole team put forth a tremendous effort. The next morning they woke up to the long trip to Wadsworth for the Grizzley Relays. This time the Bengals climbed to second place, behind first place Wooster by 4 points, 89-85. Again the High Jump unit finished first, also the 480-yard shuttles and two-mile relay. Another canceled meet was the West Tech and Ed's tri-meet. Next were the Sectionals. Giving the Bengals another Sectional 1st place was Clayton in the 100-200 yard dashes with a first, I wan with a 2nd place in the mile. Collins with a 2nd in the 440, Jones 4th in the 880, and the Mile Relay team with a 2nd for a total of 72 points. Next for the Bengals was a victorious meet against Collinwood 89-40. Closing the season for the Bengals were the Districts at Kent. The Bengals finished second. Finishing second in the 100 and 6th in the 220 was Clayton. Collins took 2nd place in the 440, and 1st place went to the Mile Relay team of Washington, Davis. Holt, and Collins. Clayton injured himself in the 100 to cancel the 880 relay team and maybe a team 1st place in the Districts. Traveling to Colombus for the state finals was Collins, scoring 6th in the 440, and the Mile Relay finished 8th, due to Washington getting an injury. However, they had the 3rd fastest time in the prelims. All in all the Track team had a very good and successful season. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Apologies are extended to the Varsity Track team by the Sports Editors. For because of complications and forgetfulness, there were no track pictures taken.
