BENEDICTINE HIGH SCHOOL 2900 EAST BOULEVARD CLEVELAND, OHIO 44104 While Tradition Lives on Home Of Chami PIONS Progress Is Being Born 5 focus on ... Focus on a Dedicated Man This yearbook is dedicated to Abbot Jerome A. Koval, O.S.B.. who celebrated his 25th anniversary in the priesthood on December 17, 1968. Me has always felt that Benedictine is a special place and has worked to better the school. Students have always respected him and considered him their friend. This is also true of the religious community of St. Andrew’s Abbey, which elected him Abbot in 1966. We wish him health, happiness in his work, and guidance from God in his Silver Jubilee year and for many years to come. 8 The Administrators 9 The Faculty Fr. Gregory Mr. Vargo Fr. Cyril and Fr. Student Power Is Its Government Led by Luke Marchmon. the Student Council has taken strides toward autonomous student government at Benedictine. It has worked to initiate various committees in order to air student complaints and find solutions suitable to all. We have seen dedicated members defend and pursue our rights and privileges. Its attempts at progress failed because of lack of honest student support on many occasions. The Council’s greatest success was in teaching students that they must lead themselves. The Bennct is no exception. At least once every month we saw the stall', headed by senior James Hricik, tell it like it is at Benedictine. Its reporters and photographers were first at every event as editors captured the sentiment of the student body. 32 The Yearbook Rebuilds This could be the dawning of a new age lor the Benedictine Yearbook. Employing a new publisher, Lr. Luke molded his staff of seven out of the senior class. The eager men had a lot to learn. They used new ideas in layout and coverage while striving for quality within limited quantity. Primarily. the editors hoped to promote a desire for a truly great book in future staff members. 33 Band Sets the Musical Pace The activities of the band were vast and continuous as it kept up the tempo of the year. Not only did it faithfully play and march at football games and rallies, but it also performed admirably in local parades and several cultural school concerts. Directed by Mr. C ckalinski, the B.H.S. production met with much deserved success. Months of preparation culminated in three glittering home performances. Audiences shared in the pulsating humor with stars, Jim Brod inski and Janice Jacobs. An activity, a happening, the Drama Club is here to stay. 1 38 Underclassman Glee Club: (below I to r—Back Row) G. Gecik, H. O'Bryant. T. Oravec. J. Gramto. A. Hudak. E. Kowalski. S. Mopes remained alive as the team nearly upended a strong Eagle lineup. The team rolled along, defeating Glenville. The spirit never faltered, but the points became harder to get as the Bengals came up against the usually powerful East Senate teams. Over the next thirteen games, the struggling Bcngals managed a meager two victories over C'ollinwood and St. Ed’s. The end of the regular season, however, found the team in their finest form as they surprised Fast Tech, one of the city’s best. 91 83 before a madly cheering capacity crowd. John Hay, and Collinwood. f rom the shadow of the varsity, the Benedictine Junior Varsity is emerging, carrying the school's hopes for success in the immediate future. They are ready to continue the tradition of the I lomc of Champions. 54 The most sparkling success of the winter was the F reshmen Basketball Team. Led by an experienced winner, Fr. Florian, the squad refused to acknowledge the possibility of losing. With fifteen straight victories, the team developed an unprecedented and welcome confidence. Severe beatings were dealt to Holy Name, St. Ignatius, Chanel, Cathedral Latin, and St. Joseph.
