Augustine Yurko Rov. Louis Hudak Rev. Matthew Bonk Rev. Thomas Podobnik Dedication is the expression of affection for a friend. We use the word friend in reference to a great many of our associates, but seldom is it used in its proper sense. To befriend, in essence, is to love, and true love is realized in one's willingness to sacrifice in order that the soul of another might be saved. It is fitting then that the class of 1967 dedicate this year's issue of the Benedictine to these six men who are celebrating twenty-five years in the service of God and man. The entire Benedictine family salutes them. We are doing this with the strong hope that they might continue their work for many more years to come and in the belief that this small form of recognition might serve as a temporal reward for all that they have done. Our meager token of thanks cannot compare with the countless rewards and blessings that will be heaped upon them, for God rewards those most who serve him most. 3 MOST REVEREND CLARENCE G. ISSENMANN. S.T.D. It is a common fact that in order for an organization to run smoothly it must have well qualified leaders. Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann has proven his ability to step in and take the reins. Successfully answering the call of Vatican II, he proceeded to bring about the modernization of the Cleveland Diocese to meet the ever increasing demands of today's world. We the men of Benedictine salute you Most Reverend Bishop, for we know that you are doing much to make Cleveland one of the finest dioceses in the nation. MOST REVEREND CLARENCE E. ELWELL, D.D.. Ph.D. Under the title of Vicar of Education, Bishop Clarence E. Elwell has been given a greater challenge to guide the trends of Catholic education in the Diocese of Cleveland. His record of past achievements is impressive indeed and we here at Benedictine High School arc proud to be a part of the accomplishments of a man of his stature and look forward to a bigger and brighter future. 4 On Tuesday morning, April 26. 1966, forty-eight members of the Benedictine community elected Rev. Jerome A. Koval O.S.B., the third abbot of St. Andrew's Abbey. The new abbot has become Co-adjutor Abbot of the Abbey with full ruling power, and President of Benedictine High School. Born on February 23, 1917 Abbot Jerome is the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Koval, who are now deceased. He attended Sacred Heart School of Wilkes-Barre. Pa. Benedictine was the Rev. Abbot's secondary school. from which he was graduated in 1935. Furthering his education, he attended St. Procopius College in Lisle, Illinois, and St. Benedict's College in Atchison. Kansas. He also did graduate work at Notre Dame University, and the Catholic University of America. The new President of B.H.S. entered the Benedictine community of St. Andrew's Abbey in 1937. He v as ordained on December 18, 1943. Abbot Koval over the years held many jobs which aided Benedictine’s development. He has been chaplain, assistant principal, librarian, prefect, assistant band moderator, Dad's Club moderator and prior. 6. RIGHT REVEREND JEROME A. Jr., displayed its talent seventeen times during the course of the year. What exactly goes into a show? What goes on behind the scenes that is taken for granted? The typical routine for every football show is like this. The band rehearsals start at 7:45 a.m. every day and last for 45 minutes. The bond has one week to prepare for a show. It has to go over music, practice marching, and learn the new ideas for the show. Multiply 45 minutes a day by five days, and the total is 225 minutes. Multiply this by 70 members in the band, and the total rises to 15.750 minutes, or 262l 2 hours. A school day is hours long. Therefore, the band puts in a combined total of 41 2 school days to put on one halftime show. Over a football season of I I weeks (not including summer and night practices] the band practices 456' 2 school days. This is just the time element alone. Countless miles are marched during the season, and there is the constant care of uniforms and shoes. This is what fans just take for granted, but a Bengal Bandsman knows it is vital. The band this year also conducted concerts at Marymount. Hoban-Dominican, and Lumen Cordium, in addition to the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts at the school. Be it rousing marches by Sousa or stirring melodies by the masters, the band has displayed qualities which have earned it the right to be called the best band Benedictine has pro- duced in ten years. Later, appearances were made in conjunction with the band at Hoban-Dominican and Lumen Cordium, as well as the annual Spring concert. After carrying out a successful freshman initiation, the council turned to more pressing problems. Included in this year's docket was the banning of work pants as proper school dress, and an extremely effective haircut campaign. At the right. Frank Bossu and Jim Betts, president and vice-president respectively, ran an orderly and effective council which proved to be one of the best in recent years. 18 The Bennet r ..,i 'Th.r .1 I'JINX' In • mi if ioii.il. monotonous livmns i ;i i:ii.
