Father Charles, a Benedictine for 48 of his 68 years, died Dec. 29 in his monastery room. Most of his life was spent as a pastor at Saint Michael's parish in Chicago. He worked there as an assistant from the time of his ordination in 1922 until October 1928 when he became pastor. Illness forced his retirement in June 1957, whereupon he moved to Saint Andrew's. The sicknesses had resulted in blindness and the amputation of both legs. Father is buried in Saint Andrew abbey's plot of Calvary cemetery. 18 Rev. Charles J. Florek, O.S.B. underclassmen ;S Benedictine's younger set is its underclassmen. These are the students at whom the faculty aims the bulk of its efforts. Following the example of seniors, they are learning the way of Benedictine men, observing and establishing tradition. They are discovering that they can benefit only in direct proportion to their efforts. This last lesson is perhaps the most important they will learn as Benedictine students for it is the basic principal of all progress. freshman class Elected in October os freshman homeroom representatives were (c ockw se, from lower left) John D wonkowski, Michael Pillar, Mark Tenoglio, Raymond Sodd. Freshmen were called upon at this time by upperclassmen to sing the Alma Mater and the fight song, besides reciting certain well-known facts about the school and its history. All this was done with the freshmen wearing their beanies during school hours. Since mental growth is the main reason we attend school, these three areas cannot command the spotlight. The faculty, however, knows that a balance is required for the complete education of the individual. For this reason, Benedictine provides a wide range of activities and functions for students to cultivate and develop their interests. The 1964-65 school year began with student orientation week Sept. 1 through 4. Students were greeted by Benedictine's new administration: principal Father Benedict, O.S.B., assistant principal-disciplinarian Father Augustine, O.S.B., and treasurer Father Placid, O.S.B. Students paid tuition, rented lockers, purchased books and renewed acquaintances. Orientation Parents orientation nights were Sept. 23 and 24. Speakers included school president Right Rev. Character formation in youth The physical aspect of the formation of a young adult gentleman is a most important one. Athletic competition, whether interscholastic or intramural is invaluable in building character, sportsmanship and morality. Benedictine's athletic director is Joe Rufus. He has been on the sports scene for 20 years a whole generation. The job which his 11 coaches is doing will bear fruit when Benedictine's athletes have matured into complete men. At Benedictine. Augie Bossu is the current leader in consecutive years of octive coaching. The 1939 University of Notre Dame alumnus began duties as baseball coach in 1954 and become head of the football team in 1955. Bengals capture 9th league crown Benedictine's varsity football team gained its ninth East Senate crown since 1945 by defeating five of six league opponents and finished the 1964 season with an overall record of six wins and four losses. A 48-6 loss to Saint Ignatius Thanksgiving day in the stadium, however, kept the Bengals from retaining the city championship. After opening the schedule with a 36-14 triumph over independent Saint Edward, the Tigers topped East Tech, 28-8 in the Senate opener. Then followed a 20-0 defeat by non-loop foe Saint Joseph. A 55-0 loss to state champion Massilon was sandwiched between league victories over East, 26-16 and Cathedral Latin, 22-0. Glcnville, then succumbed 26-6, but Benedictine was upset the following week, 13-6 by Collinwood. In the season finale, the Bengals clinched the Senate crown with a 6 0 win over John Adams.
