Abbot of St. Andrew’s Abbey jAlS PRESIDENT of Benedictine High School, Father Abbot has successfully directed the operation of the school's administrative matters. His never-ending zeal for the institution is constantly being brought out by numerous improvements occurring frequently around the campus. This interest is derived not only from his high position but rather from his heart, as is shown by his frequent attendance at student activities and his personal interest in the students. May God grant him the grace to continue in all his undertakings with equal success. We likewise dedicate this hook 3n sincere tribute to tfje it'cncbirtine Jfatliers Who instructed us through the past years and inspired us to seek God's glory and our eternal salvation. We are humbly grateful and hope that the succeeding pages may serve as a remembrance in the future and recall pleasant days at Benedictine. y' ‘ k.• - -■ •- '.?. .w?,.. m .!■ Y.. , a j t k 5fe rd)tns;f)op ®f)e Jflost eberenb Cbtoarb Jf. W, E BENEDICTINE FATHERS are happy to be associated with our students, not only during this most important phase of their lives, but also long after they have graduated. The task of learning, unfortunately, necessitates more unwelcome effort and discipline than play, and hence it is no wonder that not many lads are apt to regard their school years with actual joy. But, by the strange alchemy of time both the bitter and the sweet experiences of school will blend into pleasant memories. It is my sincere wish, therefore, that the charm of this yearbook will increase with the passing of years; that it will stimulate the memory to produce many moments of fond recollections; finally, that it will prompt many a reader to offer a prayer for God's continued blessing upon the efforts of the Fathers. 7' principal Father Benedict, our beloved principal, performs his duties each day with an unending desire to see them done well. However, his coaching genius did not take hold until 1948 when the Bengals won their first city championship. Believing that both physical and spiritual conditioning, plus desire and discipline, were necessary to produce a winning squad, he assembled one of the greatest Benedictine elevens in the school’s history and then guided it successfully to its second undisputed scholastic title. (Two years ago the Bengals were crowned as co'champions with St. Ignatius.) JOE RUFUS Father Robert (right), the athletic director and his assistant, Father Aloysius, have accepted their additional duties in the true spirit of the Benedictines. But how did such an appropriate name come to be? Before 1940, when Benedictine was still in its infancy, it was identified by a variety of nick' names, such as, the Ravens, Bennetts, Monks, Buckeyes and Bennies. However, none of these had any lasting effect. That year, Joe Oravec, editor of the 1940 annual, saw the necessity of an original title and as a result initiated a contest to uncover one. Father Benedict, the present principal, submitted the name “Bengals” and at that moment was born a worthy title for the Blue and White. A Bengal roams the wilds of India in all his majesty and he is truly royalty among his species. In addition to his beauty and royalty, he possesses agility, smartness, aggressiveness, and power. In trying to live up to the traits of this animal, Benedictine commenced to rise slowly until they were feared in all athletic competition, just as the Bengal tiger is feared by all his enemies. 46 m •'VJhkm 0 jii£- Ere C) Adams • Adams GlENVULE P fai Cdlunvdi ■ m BEFORE Father Robert makes final preparations Father Benedict and Father Murray raise the flag Cfjaritp xWl I A pcngals The days before the Charity Game were both spirited and exciting. That the spirit was high could be seen everywhere; the halls were filled with posters; 1200 tickets were sold in the school; students attended Mass and Benediction; a parade of 500 cars led by the school band was conducted. At the pre-Charity game assembly, Benedictine was honored with many guests. Most noteworthy among these was Father Armand, former member of the Benedictine faculty, who delivered a speech second only to Mr. Strosnider’s before the Latin game. Miss Barbara Hunt, Benedictine’s football queen and her attendants, Misses Carol Manino and Ann Stranan, along with the various queens, cheerleaders, captains of the other East Senate schools, all joined with students and faculty of B.H.S. to cheer the varsity onward to the city crown. The Wildcats, however, countered with two quick touchdowns via the passing of Tom Forrestal. Before the half ended, Konkoly scored on a three yard plunge and Bush added the extra point, giving the Bengals a 2012 half-time lead. Ignatius took the second-half kickoff and hit paydirt in 19 plays. But the Bengals were not to be denied. More musical entertainment was presented by the Tommy Tucker Orchestra and its two vocalists. The physique and balancing feats of Mr. Patterson gained much applause. V; •:-V- „ , I Debating ®eam At first debating was only a suggestion brought up in one of the English classes. Professors and students alike agreed that the school should have such a team. A meeting was called for anyone interested and immediately plans were laid out. At their weekly meetings in the chaplain’s office the boys not only discussed the fine points of debating, but also made arrangements for debates with other high schools. One would be led to believe that a group of this sise would lose its ideals by becoming engrossed in self centered activities. The active part the Benedictine Alumni plays in school functions removes any doubt one may have regarding the purpose of this organisation. Scholarships, Dances, Homecoming Football Game, and the Annual Football Banquet are but a few of their school centered activities. This well rounded program reaches all phases concerning the educational needs of a boy at Benedictine High School. vassatiL Alumni hold board of directors meeting at the high school. Alumni To keep an organization such as this functioning, it is necessary to provide its members with diversified activities. In doing this they have kept in mind both religious and social life. Two Communion breakfasts plus Masses fulfill the religious needs. The bowling teams and the annual picnic satisfy their social needs. ♦ ♦ . part of ai Religion Again this year Father Jerome has shown his outstanding interest in the spiritual state of the Benedictine students. As chaplain he conducted the ordinary tasks as daily Mass, Holy Communion and confessions. He encouraged religious vocations by forming the Knights of the Holy Grail and the St. John Bosco Club. The purpose of these groups was to stimulate the interest of the students in their religion. The mission drive became a success because of his spirit in personally securing the donation of each student. ♦ ivmgtits of tfje ratl Top Row — B. Gries, D. Uhlik, S. Franko, B. Wiecek, W. [ares, N. Though they did not conduct a social event, they still maintained their traditions by conducting the Warren and East High assemblies, and covering the school halls and gym walls with many posters and banners which helped to inspire school spirit in the student body. Combining school work and activities is quite a chore. The Boosters proved that it could be done by successfully taking care of both these elements of school life. Their president, Jim Ozello, and secretary, John Mizenko, took charge in organizing the previously mentioned assemblies. 1st Row ,M. ,CaCo ..c dy.I ,i c,,ko] Cello, L. Mesxoros, j.
