Archbishop-Bishop, spiritual head of the Diocese of Cleveland and friend and benefactor of Benedictine High School, we, the students, humbly dedicate this Silver Anniversary Issue of the BENEDICTINE. We fully realize that this small volume, or any material means, cannot ever fully acknowledge the interest and concern which our Most Reverend Archbishop has alwaysfshown for the progress of our school. Every year, on the Patron Feast of St. Benedict and in the presence of the Community and friends of St. AndreW,s Abbey, together with the student body, he has celebrated a Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving for the many blessings that God has showered upon us. He has always expressed himself constructively for the advancement and improvement of Benedictine High School. For this great interest and concern, therefore, we trust that he will accept this small token of our appreciation. we-4l Ol! I 0 5 M- I 0 ii: N2 G -U' lr I i 5 I. 3 . K, Q A fl- A . They were the right hand of Father Ierome, the student Chaplain. Principally it was their duty to be present and to serve the student Mass which was celebrated by the Chaplain every morning at 8 o'clock in the School Chapel. All other religious activities were also directed by the Knights of the Holy Crail. They assisted at the regular Annual Student Retreat and helped at the religious assemblies. Throughout the School year the Knights helped the students realize their Catholic obligations. R Pnnpo C- Martin Donay E Nlatuszak, N. Reeser, J. Bokar, R. Kingzett, J. Bayne Y l dh!! RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES LW s J I 3 l ' lf r ti. Maia? Throughout the school year there were many opportunities for the students to become better acquainted with their faith. Highlighting these affairs was the student retreat, held in january as well as the daily Mass. Confessions were heard every morning and throughout the day on Thursdays before First Fridays. 1.1 'R lv and devising means to better the school were only small items in the Work of our Student Council. Old Clothes Day, Dress Up Day, and Student Rule Day were some of the other projects of this group of representatives. sin, A. Blazenyak, R. Bryer, P. Spelic. Whirling around a skating rink on eight wheels, moving on three hundred and twenty ball bearings, is the way the Whirlo members get their thrills and spills, and burn up their excessive energies. Sponsoring skating parties during the school year is ir-Io the main feature on the program of this club, and they usually provide the students with two or three of these gay festivities during the year. Benedictine is kept clean only through the efforts of these boys, who stay after school each day to sweep the classrooms and the halls. For this hard effort on their part, I 5 a certain portion of their tuition is deducted by the school. This club also assists in the decorations and preparations needed for social activ- ities in the school. lst row: J. McMahon, A. Tuttin, A. Ungar, K. Bednar, Brother Aloysius, O.S.B., J. Trueman, R. Only through the tireless efforts of the boys pictured on these two pages, was this book, which you are now reading, made possible. They worked many after- noons after you had gone home, and then far into the night in order to meet the deadlines, and that you might have this book as a memory of your years here at Benedictine. We the staff of the 1952 BENEDICTINE wish to sincerely thank our Moderator, Father Cyril Novotny, O.S.B., and every student who brought in a patron, or any other person, or group of persons who helped to make this book the success which it is. joseph Russo, photogra- pher, and jerry Catalano, Editor of Photography, look over a print. Their first days in high school were the usual ones of utter confusiong trying to adjust them- selves to rules and regulations, and finding the right class at the right period. But this initial period passed. They soon buckled downv to their studies, lent an able and willing hand to such activities as they could, and showed a keen interest in the many cam- paigns held throughout the year. Freshman I-A was the first class to reach 1002 in the Patron Drive. swlvnml 503342533 gi! inf' 334' nag, A freshman class kneels in the biology lab to pray the daily rosary Joseph Adamovich Richard Alaburda John Anderson Wayne Andrews Michael Arra Charles Arth Paul Arz ,i 3 ,K X pk 1 L g yet tv , A - Michael Baca Norman Bajerski Robert Baksi Thomas Ballasch John Barba Paul Bardos Frank Barger James Bartholomew - C John Barzdukas M ' L T W as at 14: ,, John Bassgrd - - M fm. 23 if P RTD W ,. - -.gp M5 Peter Bauer iii IL 4? 5 ' 'Q f' 3 A EQ -'C Robert Becka gf My J ' L fi V K ' 'iw i A f, Donzidd gellew It e,i, W Y, i'Y,- ,y Ric ar Beno 1 I f if w. ,,' ' xi' if NN -C 1 , K ' gt f in an ,r sy, , Y, X, S Kenneth Berilla Daniel Bernaciak Andre Bial joseph Blaha Samuel Branciforti Ronald Braver Edward Bucholtz Donald Buyansky Samuel Campola Stephen Cech '1 Daniel Cleaver Lawrence Curk Donald Czech .ff it 1 lx- K fi-if xg it 5 lb 'Aj ' t it I 'T x x s if 5 1 it fl ff lt as it i - ff ' - .H . f . -Q it R T T. .V ,Eli .5 x TE V in an - is J fi 4111- -rx: ' fig' a J - - 575 Eli, it Q '- ' :if .- 3 fi I . 9 ' M ,-1 W S I I 4' 4 ' -' f 115294 'R joseph Dailey Angelo Da Prano Richard DeCapite Fred Defiore Charles Deininger Vincent Delgreio Robert Desantis john DiCioccio Mario DiFrancesco Iohn Dragan Richard Dulka Thomas Dupay William Durkin John Dzuroff Richard Elwell VVillia1n Emrhein Peter Evaldo Pierre Fahien Ernest Fargo John Faroni Ralph Fazio Eugene Fave-tti E. This was carried out very capably by the mem- bers of the Bennet Staff under the guidance of the Faculty Advisor, Father Luke, O.S.B. The Editorial Staff was chiefly composed of Seniors, while underclassmen performed the other essential duties. A testimonial dinner along with the presentation of awards climaxes the activities of the senior members after the Cub Staff assumes the responsibility of editing the paper with the first issue of the new year. .ae N H X5 w XX 1+ me W xx ws. The first game! Bengal fans saw a preview of things to come in this opening day tussle with Holy Name. A terrific backfield and a big solid line showed championship material in the 14-0 defeat handed to the Green VVave. Stars of the game were junior half-back, Pete Yakovic and Senior fullback, Mike Anzalone. Seeing these boys spearhead the attack that piled up 16 first downs and 390 yards rushing, no one suspected that they both were destined to be plagued with injuries all season. A new record! The Bengals shellacked the Trojans from Central 62-0 in this tilt, and set a new record for greatest number of points scored by a Benedictine team. All the Bengals looked great in this one. Especially significant in this game was the play of Leo Minter, 145 pound Senior half- back, who scored three touchdowns. This was another omen of things to come, for Leroy Wasn't then considered Iirst string. The defense was again outstanding. They racked up their second shutout in as many games. For the first time this year, the halls were lined with posters. 'KFlatten Latin, Knock the 'L' out of Latinf' were only a few of the sentiments expressed. And on the field our team came through. They walloped Latin 25-6. Sour note of the game was the broken collar-bone injury sustained by john Skor- upski. Scrap,' was destined to be out of action for the next five weeks. Junior George Schmidt played the whole second half at quarterback for thc Bengals, showing excellent form and scoring one touchdown himself. Other markers were made by Bob Konkoly, Pete Yakovic and Dick Konkoly. The Benedictine line was terriiic as well as the whole defensive unit. Who has the ball, boys? A dull rebound! After their defeat to Hamilton, Benedic- tine bounced back to beat Akron St. Maryis 19-0, but it Was a rather dull bounce. The Bengals looked much worse in their victory over St. Maryis than they did in their loss to the Big Blue. Benedictine and Collinwood had tied for East Senate honors, the result being a playoff to decide who would represent the East Side in the Charity Came. The field was covered with snow. For the first half Collinwood dominated the play and scored six points in each of the two quarters. After halftime, it was a different story. The Bengals were a hard fighting, fast charging team. Combining good passing and running, the team scored two touch- downs and tied Collinwood, 12-12. After our second touchdown both teams seemed powerless against each other and the game ended deadlocked. The berth in the Charity Came was given to Collin- wood, however, because they had gained 34 more yards. 'X p l QS' .L y r s 6 in t , ,.s:,. . Diligent practice in both marching and instrumentation rewarded the musicians with the trophy for the best band at the Charity Came. Led by drum major Attillio Lepri, our band marched and played itself into the first place position. After the Charity Came, the band members returned to prepare for the annual Band Concert. And again in this presentation the band was applauded for its outstanding performance. Another highlight of the year was the Military Ball which was held at Benedictine this year. The record reads 9 wins and 4 losses, and only one of these losses came in Senate com- petition. This stellar performance rewarded the Junior Varsity with the number two spot in the East Senate standings. A great factor in the success of the jay-Vees was their excellent team work. No one player was the definite star, many men shared top scoring honors through the season. At the beginning of the schedule the future looked dark for the Iunior team. They lost their first three starts. After this bad opening the team buckled down and went on to win all but one of their remaining ten games. Some of the close games were the Wins over john Adams, 34-333 Glenville, 35-33, East Tech, 29-28, and the losses to Canton Central Catholic, 29-315 and Holy Name, 36-39. DADS' CLUB The Grand Bazaar and Raffle, the Outdoor Picnic, Box Lunch, Christmas Party, Roast Beef Dinner, Summer Retreats, Freshman Night, Card Party, Father and Son Communion Breakfast, and many other activities comprise the regular Dad's Club program of the year. With such a full schedule, energetic Dads met in large numbers every second Wednesday of the month, with the Board of Directors and Advisory Board meeting every first VVednesday. Besides these successful activities of their own, the Dads found time to discuss school prob- lems with the faculty members and to further the interests of the school with an ever-present anxiety to help all of their sons, endeavors. The students salute the Dad's Club and express their gratitude for their help. The school is far richer because of their interests and sacrifices. Under the guidance of Father Cyril, the Seniors prepared themselves for a year filled with activities. After the election of officers, executive members were selected from each senior homeroom. On October 21 came the Senior Kick-off Dancef' the first of their successful ventures. The Annual Christmas Ball came next. This was held at Park Lane Villa on December 27th, where in semi-formal dress, the Seniors danced to the music of Bob Pattie. At press time of the annual, plans were already formulated for additional socials and another dance after Easter.
