O THE mothers and fathers of all the students of Benedictine, who so generously sacrificed themselves that their sons receive a Catholic High School education, that their sons emerge from their adolescent period of life with the Christian ideals and virtues firmly embedded in their hearts and souls, and to all the mothers and fathers whose daily sacrifices are the foundation and the steel- vvork, the bricks and the mortar of our new building, We, the seniors, filially and affectionately dedicate this volume of the BENEDICTINE. ,,n,,, Our Prayer H GOD Who hast commanded us to honor our Fathers and Mothers and Who by the Grace of the Holy Spirit didst pour the gifts of love into their hearts, grant health of mind and body to those who are living that they may love Thee with all their strength, and have mercy on the souls of those who have passed to their eternal re- ward, and bring them to see Thee in the joy of eternal brightness. And how,'l as most sophomores will tell. It certainly is, for it was just one year ago that we were so royally entertained by the Class of '42, This year it was our turn to bring the paddles, lipstick, nail polish and electric shoclcers. Attention, pleasel If it is the ideal class that you are seelcing, scholarly, energetic and loyal, seelc no further. After having been called to order by Fr. Jerome, our moderator and having elected the following ofhcers: John Vvagaslcy, president, Edward Walsh, vice-president, Robert Gruss, secretary-treasurer, we changed tradition by holding an initiation week instead of an initiation day. In this way we intended to accomplish more things? Father Rector, however, soon declared our ruling unconstitutional. Enough is enough, to quote his very words. As the Sophomore Class, we were well represented on the honor roll as well as on the extra- curricular activities. On the honor roll it was Edward Tomko and Edward Gotchg in football it was John Wagasky, Bob Gruss, Eugene Vavro and james Estergallg in basketball it was George Kepicg in baseball it was again Bob Gruss and jim Estergall. Though we're still undetclassmen, there is no fear that the schoolls extra-curricular activities will lack material in future years. For already we have shown capability and leadership. The Whirlo, The Benedictine, The Orchestra, The Glee Club, Dramatics, Tax Stamp Drive, all particularly show our potentialities. As the year is closing we are preparing to become uppereclassmen. We pledge, by that class spirit, which has been prevelant during our freshman and sophomore years, to uphold the traditions and standards of Benedictine established by the preceeding upper-classes, when we ourselves attain that desired rank. Encounter the book-sellers, fabulous prices are aslced, flat refusals are given, there is a show of disappointment and sliclccr sophs slouch out, mur- muring something or other. The tryouts. T. Shisila, Porac, A. Miiidzora, K. Kniola, A. Tower, and Olearcilc are accepted. Then the exams. Wfhat a surprise-not pleasant, either! These aren't like we had last year in grammar schoolf But our quality became evident when two of our classmen, B. Kitlio and hiirlca, lad the rest of the school in all honors. Wfe have been paying particular attention to the activities of the Sophomorcs. Our time will comel Cur interest in school activities is noticed everywhere. Composition, make-up, proofing, dummy-set-up, folding, binding, printing and even press operating, all found student participation. Laurels among the business staff go to, Joseph I-lovanscek, Nlichael Maruskin, Raymond Rockey, Lawrence Petelin, and Joseph Carroll, although it was the tribmvirate of Arth-Hudac-Yaeger that canvassed the city and carried the brunt of the task. No, we weren't auctioning the furnishings of Benedictine nor selling any tohacco, it was just another stamp auction sponsored hy the Stamp Cluh, the school,s Philatelist Society. The cluh, organized hy Fr. Florian, an ardent stamp lover, had several aims to attain. These were: to clarify and explain terms and ohjects used in this fascinating hobhy and to enable and help each member to increase or hetter his collections. The cluh was not a new organization for it dates hack to the first graduating class. lt had ceased to exist during some of the following years though the school had many stamp collectors, students as well a the faculty. john Maro had one of rhe most valuahle and hest collections in the cluh. The occasion is the third slcating party sponsored by the Benedictine Whirlo. The Whirlo, though several years old, arose and became one of the most prominent and progressive extra curricular organizations in the school. The success of the club was greatly due to the guidance and advice of its moderator, Father Daniel, an ardent roller-skating fan, and the spirit and ability of its officers. The members elected joseph Caruso, Richard .Ma- danslcy, William Yatslco, and James Fronelc as oflicers. The club was formed expressively for the purpose of instructing and educating its members in artistic and fancy skating. It toolc great strides toward this goal at its weelcly practice held at Slcateland-the home of the Whirlo Clubs-where the members met and mingled with the skaters from other Whirlo Clubs. The future of the club can be viewed without trepidation. The fascination of the sport, the spirit of its moderator, and the sincerity of its members are suflicient basis on which to ground any hope. Since one of the requirements for entrance was a camera, the initial meeting brought forth cameras of every size, shape, and make. During this meeting the operation and use of the camera was explained, officers were elected, talks and programs for future sessions were planned and winter scene pictures were dis:ussed. The more interested members used Father Cyrills darkroom and with his help, a workbench was constructed, the enlarger installed, shelves and cabinets erected and supplies and materials moved in. Here the more fortunate delved into the secrets of photography and began to talk in terms intelligible only to those acquainted with the camera art. The club took upon itself the task of supplying the Annual with snapshots and to do general photography of the school. cn. Wllllll .J aj lil X 5 . Method, the students had not only been educated in the appreciation of this art but had also attained a praitseworthy degree of versatility. At the Annual Benedictine Christmas Party the Glee Club thrilled an audience of more than 400 with their presentation of several immortal Christmas carols and ballads in a crowning demonstration of several months of constant work. Their inspiring interpretation brought salvo after salvo of applause from the audience. The Glee Club has been a complete success. It served the purpose for which it was formed for it instilled into the students at large a greater appreciation for light classical compositions and immortal ballads. It gave those students interested, an opportunity to display their talents to the public. il mm 'lit N i J Y siafi l ml - g 5' , n,,.m Hill X i 1 .' V U- , 'C - K , h. V.. - , 1 Q? lb XAX HQ ,Iv v. I I r lg Q M 5 Seniors in Review AVING our whole year planned out during the sum- mer vacation by the officers elected in the latter part of our junior Year, we entered wholeheartedly to our new assign- ment upon registering at the New Benedictine High School for the first and last time. Under the guidance of Father Cyril, we started the new year with much enthusiasm. In fact with so much interest, that at the first meeting, oflicers were installed, annual was discussed and a skating party was planned. The party was a huge success and was attended by 300 enthusiastic skaters. Two socials, Nov. 5, and Nov. 27, re- spectfully, held in conjunction with St. Theresa's Sodality were attended by the majority of the seniors and a few juniors. Soon after Christmas another social was planned and the annual, pride of every senior, began to talce shape. The fear that it wouldn't be published became a passing memory. Early in February committees were named for the Senior Dance and Senior Prom, which are the last social affairs of our class. The days went by and before we realized it we made our retreat, the Easter season had passed and we headed for the home stretch. - At this point the Annual is going to press. Preparations for the Senior Dance, Prom and Commencement are com- pleted. Another month and we shall reach the goal of our high school ambitions. Then we shall bring down the curtain to high sshool life of the Class of 1941. 4- LADISLAUS HUDAC ANTHONY LIOTTA FRANCIS ZUPCAK ROBERT ARTI-I JOSEPH CHULAK PRESIDENT VICE-PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER SEGT.-AT-ARMS RAYMOND RAY ROCKEY St. .Iohrfs Cathedral: Library 4: Annual 4. B,lieve me, comrade, our pigskin Bengals, pugnaciously playing the proximate positions at a pell mell pace, broke into the win column in the Senate race. Now gather 'round while papa quotes you some statistics. T seems that, in a non-senate tussle, Maple Heights and Benedictine rassled for four quarters, to hear the final whistle on a 20-0 victory for our eleven. While the man in back yelled peanuts, popcorn, and crakerjacksf' in competition with the quarterbacks' booming signals, our huslcies went clown in defeat at the hands of East Highs' Blue Bombers, 32-0. We won't go into lurid details--nasty business. Ending the Hrst half 6 points to the good with Central on a muddy October 19, the boys took wings and put across two more touchdowns for a decisive victory, Z0-0. Now, gentlemen, we cometto another feather, so-down in front! Although we didn,t llce the way this feature ended, in justice to sportsmanlilce competitors, here goesg October 12, 1940-Cathedral Latin, 40, Benedictine, 6. The score does not tell the whole story for it was still anybody,s game at the half. Then comes the biggest upset of the season in the Senate. In a blinding snowstorm, with three long runs by jim Estergall, Bob Gruss and Johnnie Yurcho chalking up three touch- clowns, the Bengals crushed a highly favorite John Adams' eleven, 25-0. Were they quite surprised. Knapik rounds Maple Heights left end for 15 yards Q Y..:.'-, ,ff ...x Wm REV. ARMAND GRESS, O.S.B. HE last gun barks, the whistle shrills, the basketball season ends. The Bengals did not fare so well but they upheld the reputation for pro- ducing line squads, teeming with spirit, lighting for victory, and fearing none but feared by all. Late in November, 55 prospective cagers reported for squad tryouts. Veterans, Lad Hiudac, Joe Chulalc and Bill Zahurancik formed the nucleus while the hours of practice molded a hopeful team from the green material. To a truly worthy team we pay our highest tribute-to a squad which gave the best in them, we doff our hats. And now for our dynamic Reserve team. Under the expert hand of the faculty coach, Fr. Florian Hudac, the Junior Varsity bowled over almost all opposition in their quest of supremacy. Composed almost entirely of Sophomores and Juniors this fine team will form the Varsity for two years to come. Scoring twice the number of points as their opponents, the Reserves lost but three encounters and won thirteen. They featured no one. They all had the spirit of fine co-operation, good passing, and accurate shooting. 22 -11 WW f . 4 . l ' 1. Mum NWN A l .i, swwwv V s , 1 - '?'l V' . 0- 1 5, ' . .N fx ' if M x .
